Bird made a good getaway and Buemi drew alongside the fractionally slower Vergne entering the first corner. As he turned to the inside line to block Vergne, it appeared Bird would lead comfortably.

As Hill's Williams drew alongside the Benetton, Schumacher appeared to turn in aggressively and there was contact between the two rival cars. The Benetton was then momentarily flung into the air and was damaged badly enough to mean immediate retirement for the German. Hill's car initially appeared to be undamaged but it was soon apparent the Briton's front left wishbone was broken. Hill toured back slowly to the pits and after some time trying to repair the damage, retired.

The little ship disappeared in a veritable cloud of spray that, when it subsided, revealed Pelican- heavily hit, battered, and holed-assuming a list before beginning to settle. As the seemingly mortally wounded minesweeper wallowed in the swells, Auk, immediately altered course to close Pelican. Passing a line at 1008, within 10 minutes of the explosions, Auk drew alongside Pelican. After seeing one hose line part, Auk passed another to aid Pelican in pumping out the rapidly rising water below decks.

The Championship Course along which the Boat Race is contested Cambridge were underdogs for the race, having lost all but one of the previous fourteen Boat Races. Cambridge president Paddy Mant won the toss and elected to start from the Surrey station. A minute into the race, Cambridge held a third-of-a-length advantage, but as the crews approached the Fulham bend, Oxford drew alongside. Intelligent coxing from Oxford's Watts gained Oxford a lead of a length after three minutes.

Coletti had forced Leimer to defend the lead at turn four and drew alongside him through turns five and six but could not overtake. Bird made a quick start and overtook Rossi and Quaife-Hobbs in the centre of the circuit for third position. Nobuharu Matsushita (pictured in 2015) won his second career victory in the GP2 Series by 13,6 seconds over Marvin Kirchhöfer. The second event began in a warm air temperature of and a track temperature of at 16:10 local time on 28 May. Sirtokin's team changed the monocoque on his car after his crash in the feature race. On the grid, Matsushita had a slow initial getaway and the second-placed Kirchhöfer was faster off the grid and drew alongside him into Sainte Devote corner.

Buckle ordered the 60-gun British ship HMS Rippon under Captain Edward Jekyll to pursue the French, Jekyll chasing the enemy ships into the Bay of Biscay. The French ships were the 64-gun Achille and frigate Bouffone. Although the French ships outdistanced Rippon, Jekyll sighted them again the following afternoon and at 21:30 successful drew alongside Achille, opening fire at close range. The wind was strong and the seas rough, neither ship able to easily use their lower gun deck without water sloshing in through the gunports.

Hülkenberg made a fast start to advance from 12th to ninth, as Pérez moved up from tenth to eighth. Fernando Alonso retired when his front wing became lodged under his Ferrari and prevented him from steering it. Heidfeld drew alongside Vergne at the turn two hairpin but the latter locked his brakes and ran deep, preventing Heidfeld from passing him. Lotterer incurred with a drive-through penalty that was related to his first lap multi-car collision as Filippi was similarly penalised for his earlier collision with Rosenqvist. On the 42nd lap, Rosenqvist braked later than Piquet at the first corner and overtook him for fifth place.

Meanwhile, Engel opened up a healthy advantage over the second-placed Van Der Zande when the complexion of the event changed on lap 12. Van Der Zande was delayed by traffic and this allowed Mücke to challenge him for second position going into Lisboa corner. The resulting manoeuvre saw Mücke ram into the rear of Van der Zande's car and debris from the latter's car lodged onto Mücke's left-rear wheel. On the next lap, Mücke drew alongside on the inside of Van Der Zande driving towards Lisboa corner and the two made contact.

With Ganj-i-sawai unable to escape, Fancy drew alongside. For a moment, a volley of Indian musket fire prevented the pirates from clambering aboard, but one of Ganj-i-sawais powerful cannons exploded, instantly killing many and demoralizing the Indian crew, who ran below deck or fought to put out the spreading fires. Every's men took advantage of the confusion, quickly scaling Ganj-i-sawais steep sides. The crew of Pearl, initially fearful of attacking Ganj-i-sawai, now took heart and joined Every's crew on Indian ship's deck.

Around 7:30 pm on the night of Saturday 14 July 2001, Falconio and Lees were travelling on the Stuart Highway bound for the Devil's Marbles in their orange Kombi. Falconio was driving and Lees sat next to him in the passenger seat. The two had been conscious of a car that had been following them since they stopped at a roadhouse in Barrow Creek, and were expecting to be overtaken. However, when the vehicle - a white Toyota 4WD with a green canopy - drew alongside, the driver gestured excitedly at them to pull over.

As the field drove towards turn two, Michael Schumacher drew alongside Montoya on the right going into the turn and then steered left for the corner itself.

The rank outsider Frisby Full was first from the traps and led the two Irish runners Chart King and Deerfield Sunset until the third bend. Craven drew alongside Busch at the exit of turn four; both drivers got loose without slowing, and clattered into each other several times in the final , with smoke emitting from their tires. Craven earned his second career win, beating Busch by 0.002 seconds (about ), then the closest finish in NASCAR Cup Series history since the introduction of electronic scoring in the 1993 season. Blaney placed third, his best career finish.

Ilott had a large amount of momentum on Eriksson, that at the start of lap seven, he passed Eriksson on the inside at the Mandarin Bend kink for the lead. After he was overtaken by Ilott, Eriksson immediately came under pressure from his teammate Sette Câmara. Norris fell to ninth after his slow getaway and overtook Ticktum to return to the top five on lap seven but then slowed without warning and fell down the order.

It was reported that Challacombe, who was equipped with blinkers, had been considered unlikely to run in the race until the withdrawals of Cicero and Val d'Or. Challacombe was not among the early leaders but drew alongside the tiring Cherry Lass in the straight before pulling away to win "easily" by three lengths from Polymelus with the favourite three lengths back in third place. The winning time of 3:05.4 was a new record for the race. Challacombe ended the year with earnings of £6,847 making him the sixth most financially successful horse of the season.

At the front, Courtney focused on increasing his lead by recording the weekend's fastest lap of 2 minutes, 12.937 seconds on the tenth lap, and it appeared he would win the race comfortably. On arrival at Dunkirk, Lightoller realized that the piers were too high, and so drew alongside the destroyer and started to take on soldiers. Seventy-five men were crammed into the cabin, and another fifty-five on deck, a total of 130. Sundowner then returned to Ramsgate, avoiding fire from enemy aircraft through evasive manoeuvres on the way, though the greatest danger was being swamped by the wash from fast-moving destroyers. Every now sailed in pursuit of the Ganj-i-Sawai, overtaking her about eight days out of Surat. The Ganj-i- Sawai was a fearsome opponent, mounting 62 guns and a musket-armed guard of four to five hundred as well as six hundred other passengers. But the opening volley evened the odds, as one of the Indian ship's cannons exploded, killing some of its gunners and causing great confusion and demoralization among the crew, while Every's broadside shot his enemy's mainmast by the board. The larger Fancy drew alongside, and a number of her 113-man crew clambered aboard, overpowering the crew, passengers and slaves of the Ganj-i-Sawai.

When the white flag waved for the final lap, Kevin Harvick in his Chevy drafted up the outside, overtaking the Toyota of Carl Edwards. Denny Hamlin saw the advancing Harvick and jumped to the outside line from 4th to block his advance, was bumped by Harvick on the back straight and drafted all the way to the front past Kyle Busch and Martin Truex and drew alongside his teammate Kenseth. Kenseth came down on Hamlin, got himself loose and fell back to finish 14th. Hamlin and Truex drag raced to the finish line and Hamlin prevailed by 0.010 seconds, the closest in Daytona 500 history.

On 19 October 1867 Rhone drew alongside RMS Conway in Great Harbour, Peter Island for bunkering. The original coaling station they needed had been moved from the then Danish island of St. Thomas due to an outbreak of yellow fever. On the day of the sinking, Rhones Master, Frederick Woolley, was slightly worried by the dropping barometer and darkening clouds, but because it was October and hurricane season was thought to be over, Rhone and Conway stayed in Great Harbour. The storm which subsequently hit was later known as the San Narciso Hurricane and retrospectively categorised as a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale.

However, as the ferry drew alongside Louisville, excited passengers rushed upstairs such the upper deck was carrying about 100 passengers, well in excess of the upper deck's limit of 60 making the ferry top heavy. Rodney sinking Between Garden Island and Bradleys Head, Rodney passengers shouted to the skipper to take the ferry around to the cruiser's port side. Félix da Costa ran near his teammate, drafted him heading into Mandarin corner, and turned right onto the outside line to gain the lead before the braking point going into Lisboa corner. Félix da Costa began to pull away from Sette Cãmara, leading him by 1.7 seconds by the start of lap 10 which saw the second deployment of the safety car when Cassidy (who started from 28th after changing his engine) impacted the Paiol corner barrier. The race restarted three laps later with Félix da Costa leading Sette Cãmara. The latter drew alongside his Carlin teammate heading towards Lisboa corner but Félix da Costa held the lead by turning onto the inside line.

After tracking the early leaders Tranquil drew alongside Papyrus in the straight, before pulling away to win by two lengths. On her next appearance Tranquil ran in the Jockey Club Stakes over fourteen furlongs at Newmarket on 4 October for which she started the 1/3 favourite and finished third behind the colts Inkerman and Legality. On 1 November at Newmarket Tranquil was moved up in distance for two and quarter mile Jockey Club and won by a length and a half at odds of 1/5 from Abe Bailey's colt Apron. Tranquil won two other races in 1923, namely the Newmarket Oaks over 14 furlongs and the Liverpool St Leger on 7 November, beating the colt Twelve Pointer by a head in the latter event.

The task force retired from the scene of battle toward the Tonga Islands. While alongside New Orleans to refuel two days later, Aylwin rigged breeches buoys forward and aft, and took on board 37 officers and 92 enlisted men from Lexington and one Yorktown pilot, Lt. (jg.) E. S. McCuskey, of VF-2, who would later become an "ace" in the Battle of Midway. The destroyer cast off and resumed her screening duties. On the morning of 15 May, Aylwin drew alongside Yorktown, and transferred charts of the Tonga Islands to the carrier. Less than an hour later, while the carrier's planes flew protective cover, TF 17 entered Nukualofa Harbor, Tongatapu, where Aylwin transferred her passengers to Portland while fueling from the heavy cruiser.

The carrier's crew lined every topside vantage point, silent, watching the helicopters bring 50 wounded and nine dead from Liberty to America. As Liberty drew alongside, listing, her sides perforated with rockets and cannon shell, nearly 2,000 of the carrier's crew were on the flight deck and, spontaneously moved by the sight, gave the battered Liberty and her brave crew a tremendous cheer. Americas medical team worked around the clock removing shrapnel, and treating various wounds and burns. Doctors Gordon, Flynn and Lieutenant Donald P. Griffith, MC, worked for more than 12 hours in the operating room, while other doctors, Lt. George A. Lucier and Lt. Frank N. Federico made continuous rounds in the wards to aid and comfort the wounded.

While on a repositioning cruise from Durban, South Africa to Genoa, Italy with some 1,000 passengers and 500 crew members on board, MSC Melody was attacked by Somali pirates on 25 April 2009 when approximately 300 km off Seychelles at around 11:25 PM local time (19:35 UTC). A speedboat with six people on board drew alongside the ship, fired at the bridge with an automatic rifle and subsequently the pirates attempted to board the ship. Media reports indicate passengers fought off pirates by throwing tables and deck chairs overboard before the ship's security personnel could be mobilized. Later, the ship's Israeli private security detail attempted to repel the pirates by using the ship's fire hose and, when this failed, pistols.

Hornish held his lead into turn one, but he lost it to Rice who passed him on the left two corners later. De Ferran was now running in fifth by lap 28. Three laps later, Unser lost the third position to Boat in turn one. On the 43rd lap, Unser overtook de Ferran around the right of him for fourth place at turn three. On lap 46, Unser used Noda's slower car to pass Hornish for second at turn one. Sam Hornish Jr. (pictured in 2008) edged out Al Unser Jr. by 0.0024 seconds to win his fourth victory of the season. Unser drew alongside Rice for one lap, and led the field by 0.0375 seconds on the 48th lap.

This was due to a lack of tyre grip, and he sought to conserve his tyres since he did not want to overheat them in the aerodynamic turbulence created by the airflow over the rear of Hülkenberg's car. In his first lap out of aerodynamic turbulence, Alonso was unable to close up to the Red Bull cars; Vettel opted to avoid tyre strain and losing grip in case of a safety car deployment. Hülkenberg blocked Hamilton from passing him on the inside at the start of the 11th lap, notwithstanding Hamilton's more powerful engine. They drew alongside going into Descica do Lago turn as Hülkenberg maintained fourth. left At the conclusion of the same lap, Button, separated by slower cars, made the race's first pit stop to switch onto the medium compound tyres, emerging in 18th position.

Button drew alongside Webber in the run down to the bottom corner, forcing Webber to take a defensive line again, but the Red Bull driver held his line and managed to pull the car up in time and held on for second place despite a minor error at turn fourteen. At the front of the field, Sebastian Vettel won the race by seventeen seconds, securing the runner-up position in the championship from Barrichello, who went on to finish fourth ahead of Nick Heidfeld in BMW Sauber's final race. Kobayashi was sixth, scoring his first career points, with Toyota teammate Jarno Trulli taking seventh, and Sébastien Buemi closing out the points-scoring positions in eighth, four seconds ahead of the Williams of Nico Rosberg, also in his final race for his team. This was the last race to feature pit stops for refueling, which had been re-introduced in , as the regulations for had banned them.
