The Dutch however started to look upon Riau and the Bugis as a dangerous rival to Dutch trade in the region, drawing away trade from their ports in Malacca and Batavia (Jakarta). A Dutch fleet attacked Riau in 1784 but failed to hold the islands. Another attempt later the same year also failed before they managed to break the Bugis blockade of Malacca in June 1784. The Bugis commander, Raja Haji was killed during battle and the Bugis units retreated, which opened the way for a Dutch counterattack on Riau.

The election saw the entry of the environmentalist Values Party into civic politics in Wellington, making it the second nationwide political party to participate in local elections. The Values Party did better than expected with party founder Tony Brunt elected to the council, the first successful third party candidate in Wellington history. Brunt also stood for Mayor with his candidacy drawing away many left-wing voters from the Labour Party.
Town government conducted little business in 1861 and 1862 and did not convene at all from 1863 to 1865. The population began to decline after the war and railroads began supplanting steamboat commerce. Arrow Rock failed in its bids to secure a rail line and a bridge across the Missouri River. The rapid post war growth of urban areas such as Kansas City, St. Louis and Chicago began drawing away residents with the promise of better jobs. The town was swept by disastrous fires in 1864, 1872 and 1901.

Towersey Halt railway station was an intermediate station on the Wycombe Railway which served the Oxfordshire village of Towersey from 1933 to 1963. The possibility of reopening the line through Towersey Halt, which is now part of a long-distance footpath, has been explored by Chiltern Railways, the franchise holder for the Chiltern Main Line which runs through .

Easy Goer's time was particularly exceptional considering that on the same day at Belmont, older allowance horses ran the same distance just under two seconds slower. His trainer said after the race, "Then I knew I was training something special." Three weeks after that near- record performance, Easy Goer next won the seven-furlong Grade I Cowdin Stakes with little encouragement, defeating Is It True again by four lengths. Easy Goer was never more than three and a half lengths behind the early leaders, who ran quick early fractions of 22 2/5 and 45 3/5, before drawing away through the stretch.
However, any fifth region would require additional funding or reduce the funding available to the remaining regions from the WRU and TV rights, as well as reducing their number of feeder clubs and potentially drawing away their support. North Wales was nominally part of the Scarlets' region at the introduction of regional rugby. Despite containing a significant part of the Welsh population, rugby has traditionally been less well established in the north. As a means to develop rugby in the area, the WRU established RGC 1404 in 2008 as a north Wales representative development side, based in Colwyn Bay.
Both types of torpedo bombers suffered heavy casualties. Out of the six Avengers, five were shot down and the other returned heavily damaged with one of its gunners killed, and the other gunner and the pilot injured. Nonetheless, the US torpedo bombers were credited with drawing away the Japanese combat air patrols so the American dive bombers could successfully hit the Japanese carriers. Author Gordon Prange posited in Miracle at Midway that the outdated Devastators (and lack of new aircraft) contributed somewhat to the lack of a complete victory at Midway (the four Japanese fleet carriers were sunk directly by dive bombers instead).
Stoke began the 1899–1900 campaign well, beating Liverpool and Preston North End at home and drawing away at Burnley in their first three matches. Tom Wilkes had replaced the outgoing George Clawley in goal and there was a change in attack as local player Sam Higginson was introduced in the place of Fred Molyneux who joined Bristol City while Jack Farrell joined Southampton. Tom Holford also came through the ranks at the Victoria Ground and he went on to become a club legend making over 260 appearances. There was also change in the boardroom as Mr W Cowlishaw replaced Mr J Fenton.
The pacemaker Atout (ridden by Piggott) led the field into the straight before giving way to Celtic Cone. Lassalle, however, moved up to join Celtic Cove before drawing away to win by five lengths, with a gap of four lengths back to The Admiral in third. Although Timeform acknowledged that the French colt had won in "grand style", they described the field as one of the poorest ever assembled for Britain's premier staying event.
Still retaining the primary meaning of 'abstrere' or 'to draw away from', the abstraction of money, for example, works by drawing away from the particular value of things allowing completely incommensurate objects to be compared (see the section on 'Physicality' below). Karl Marx's writing on the commodity abstraction recognizes a parallel process. The state (polity) as both concept and material practice exemplifies the two sides of this process of abstraction. Conceptually, 'the current concept of the state is an abstraction from the much more concrete early- modern use as the standing or status of the prince, his visible estates'.
'Bolivia and Paraguay agree to work together to mitigate fire in the Amazon' - video news report from Abya Yala TV in Bolivia. The media coverage had also broadly overshadowed the Amazon fires in Bolivia, Peru, and Paraguay by the fires and international impact of those in the BLA. The Amazon wildfires also occurred shortly after major wildfires reported in Greenland and Siberia after a globally hotter-than-average June and July, drawing away coverage of these natural disasters. Some of these photographs shared on social media were from past fire events in the Amazon or from fires elsewhere.
Ralph insists that no such beast exists, but Jack, who has started a power struggle with Ralph, gains a level of control over the group by boldly promising to kill the creature. A ship travels by the island, but without the boys' smoke signal to alert the ship's crew, the vessel continues without stopping. Ralph angrily confronts Jack about his failure to maintain the signal; in frustration Jack assaults Piggy, breaking one of the lenses of his glasses.

City also lost to Arsenal and drew at home to Leicester City before claiming their first win against Bournemouth, which was followed up with away victories against Aston Villa and Swansea City.
There were unavoidable price increases as parts and labour became more expensive. Adana presses were virtually indestructible and the company had a policy of supplying parts, so there was little incentive to buy new when second-hand presses were readily available. Lithography was drawing away much of the commercial market and letterpress printing (along with many crafts) became unfashionable as the 1980s brought new technology into homes. The company was wound down and the assets sold to Caslon Limited who continued to produce the more popular presses until 1999 when the last Eight-Five was sold in Japan.

Morris Cowley was an intermediate station on the Wycombe Railway which served the small town of Cowley, just outside Oxford, from 1908 to 1915, and again from 1928 to 1963. The station originally opened as part of an attempt by the Great Western Railway to enable to have more passengers access to the line, at a time when competition from bus services was drawing away patronage. The line through Morris Cowley remains open for the purposes of serving the BMW Mini factory, although the possibility of reinstating passenger services has been explored by Chiltern Railways, the franchise holder for the Chiltern Main Line which runs through .
Larwood and Perkins, p. 100 Hobbs, who having retired from Test cricket was reporting the tour for London's The Star newspaper, thought that the bowling had shaken Bradman's confidence: "He was drawing away, sure proof that he didn't like the bumpers".Larwood and Perkins, p. 101 The English tactics in the game offended the crowds and so upset H.V. On 10 March 2015, Un de Sceaux started 4/6 favourite for the Arkle Challenge Trophy on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival. Clarcam was again in opposition but the betting suggested that his main danger would come from the Paul Nicholls-trained Vibrato Valtat, who had won the Henry VIII Novices' Chase, Wayward Lad Novices' Chase and the Kingmaker Novices' Chase in his last three races. Un de Sceaux took his customary early lead and shook off the challenge of Vibrato Valtat approaching the second last. At the same time, Han Xin used the distraction to invade Guanzhong unexpectedly via Chencang, and quickly defeated Zhang Han in a surprise attack. Following that, Sima Xin and Dong Yi both surrendered to Liu Bang, and by 205 BC the Three Qins became part of Liu's Kingdom of Han.

The only opposition left for Senna and Prost was each other as they were drawing away from the new third placed man Alessandro Nannini. The Italian's Benetton used the less powerful, but more reliable, HBA1 engine in the race and not the development HBA4. His teammate Emanuele Pirro did use the development V8 in the race, and while he was not as quick as Nannini, he did use it to move up to 10th after starting 22nd. Pirro's race ended on lap 33 after a collision at the hairpin with Andrea de Cesaris where Pirro ran into the back of his fellow Italian's Dallara.

Between July 18 and July 23, the defenses, held by two Republican corps led by Colonels Ernesto Güemes and Carlos Romero, were successful in halting the Nationalist advance. The Nationalists tried to break the Republican defenses with waves of infantry and intense bombing raids, but the Republican defenders through the use of well planned trenches and protected lines of communication were able to inflict heavy casualties on the Nationalists (about 20,000 casualties), suffering relatively few themselves (only 5,000 casualties). Harper founded the nation's first departments of Egyptology and sociology at Chicago and established the University of Chicago Press. He also instituted the nation's first extension school, enabling those who worked during the day to attend classes at night and on weekends. One of Harper's ideas, that many would benefit by taking the first two years of college in their hometowns, led to the founding of American community colleges. In the 1890s, Harper, fearful that the vast resources of the University of Chicago would injure smaller schools by drawing away good students, established an affiliation program with several regional colleges and universities, including Des Moines College, Kalamazoo College, Butler College, and Stetson University.

Ridden by Andrea Atzeni he started 9/2 favourite in a fifteen-runner field, with the best-fancied of his opponents being Home of the Brave (European Free Handicap), Lightning Moon (Bengough Stakes), Safety Check (Zabeel Mile) and Ivawood (Richmond Stakes). After starting slowly and overcoming some trouble in running he took the lead entering the final furlong before drawing away to win "readily" by three and three quarter lengths from Markaz.
On her track debut, Wait A While finished fifth in a maiden race over six furlongs on dirt at Saratoga Race Course on August 29, 2005. A month later she was switched to the turf surface at Belmont Park and won a one-mile maiden, taking the lead on the final turn and drawing away in the closing stages to win by five lengths under a ride from John Velazquez. On the dirt at Belmont on 23 October she started the 1.6/1 favorite for the nine furlong Miss Grillo Stakes in which she was ridden as on her debut by Jerry Bailey. She took the lead from the start and was never challenged, winning by six and a half lengths from Swap Fliparoo.
At the beginning of May, Sir John Owen, a Caernarfonshire landowner who had served as Royalist governor of Conwy Castle during the first war, began recruiting in Merioneth. Senior Royalist exile John Byron, who in March had been given a commission to raise men in his former command of North Wales by the Prince of Wales in anticipation of a Scots intervention, immediately left France for Anglesey on hearing of Owen's mobilisation. While small numbers were involved, Byron believed a guerrilla- type campaign in the north could assist the Pembrokeshire rebels by drawing away Parliament's resources. On arrival at Anglesey Byron found most local landowners unenthusiastic, but he and Owen continued recruitment efforts throughout May, "giving out many threatening speeches against the Parliament".
During this period, the Oriental Institute was founded to support and interpret archeological work in what was then called the Near East. In the 1890s, the university, fearful that its vast resources would injure smaller schools by drawing away good students, affiliated with several regional colleges and universities: Des Moines College, Kalamazoo College, Butler University, and Stetson University. In 1896, the university affiliated with Shimer College in Mount Carroll, Illinois. Under the terms of the affiliation, the schools were required to have courses of study comparable to those at the university, to notify the university early of any contemplated faculty appointments or dismissals, to make no faculty appointment without the university's approval, and to send copies of examinations for suggestions.
On his racecourse debut Sandford Lad contested the Berkshire Stakes over five furlongs at Newbury Racecourse in June and finished second by half a length to Quentilian, a colt who went on to be runner-up in the Middle Park Stakes. He won his remaining three races, all over the minimum distance of five furlongs. In the Errol Stakes at Epsom Downs Racecourse later in June he led from the start before drawing away in the closing stages to win by five lengths from the filly Miss Slip, later to win the Molecomb Stakes. In the Pilgrim Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse in July he won by four lengths from Gracious Melody and Brave Lad, conceding eleven pounds to the runner-up.
In the 2014/15 National Hunt season, Thistlecrack finished fifth in the Championship Standard Open NH Flat Race at Ascot Racecourse in December and was then campaigned in novice hurdle races. On his first run over obstacles he won "easily" at Wincanton on 15 January, taking the lead approaching the final hurdle and drawing away to win by nine lengths. Nine days later the gelding was stepped up in class for the Grade 2 Classic Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham Racecourse and finished tailed-off in seventh place behind the Alan King-trained Ordo Ab Chao. Having been ridden by an amateur jockey in his previous starts, Thistlecrack was partnered by the leading professional Ruby Walsh when he ran at Ascot in 14 February.
After failing to appear on the track as a juvenile, Castle Lady made her debut on 14 March in a maiden race over 1600 metres on the synthetic Polytrack surface at Chantilly Racecourse in which she was ridden by Pierre-Charles Boudot. Starting the 2.7/1 favourite she raced in second place before taking the lead 200 metres from the finish and drawing away to win by three and a half lengths from Red Curry. Mickael Barzalona rode the filly in all of her subsequent races. One month after her maiden win Castle Lady was stepped up in class for the Group 3 Prix de la Grotte at Longchamp Racecourse and started the 4.7/1 third favourite behind Lily's Candle (winner of the Prix Marcel Boussac) and Tifosa (winner of the Listed Prix la Camargo).
After an advance by FAPLA infantry and tanks from Mulondo had been stopped by a SAAF air attack, a smaller SADF force called Combat Team Tango, was sent forward with artillery to the area around the town of Mulondo with the same objective that had been achieved with Quiteve. From around 16 December until around 15 January 1984, the SADF plan called for action to force FAPLA's 19th Brigade to withdraw from the area and position UNITA troops in their place. During this phase, FAPLA used their own reconnaissance to track the small SADF force and were successful in attacking the South Africans with artillery, forcing the South Africans to withdraw frequently. This forced the SAAF to conduct air missions against this town, drawing away missions that were to be utilised against Cahama and Cuvelai.
Case Blue involved German and other Axis forces sprawled out across a front over wide and several hundred kilometers deep, while the decision to conquer Stalingrad had stretched Axis forces even more thinly by drawing away personnel eastwards. For example, in early July the Sixth Army was defending a line, while also committing to an offensive which involved a distance of around . Army Group B, which was split from Army Group South (the forces operating around the Caucasus were named Army Group A), seemed strong on paper: it included the Second and Sixth German, Fourth Panzer, Fourth and Third Romanian, Eighth Italian, and Second Hungarian Armies. Army Group B had the 48th Panzer Corps, which had the strength of a weakened panzer division, and a single infantry division as reserves.
On his first appearance as a three-year-old, Proclamation contested the Group Two Dante Stakes (a major trial for The Derby) over ten and a half furlongs at York Racecourse in May when he was ridden for the first time by Frankie Dettori. He was made the 7/2 second favourite, but after pulling hard in the early stages he weakened badly in the last quarter mile and finished last of the six runners behind Motivator. Later that month the colt was dropped in class and distance for the Listed Heron Stakes over one mile at Goodwood Racecourse. He was restrained by Dettori in the early running before accelerating into the lead approaching the final furlong and drawing away to win "comfortbly" by three lengths from the David Elsworth-trained favourite Tucker.
Her challengers included Dead Certain and Please Believe Me who had finished first and second in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. After chasing the leaders she finished strongly but it was only in the final stride that she caught Dead Certain (who was carrying a five-pound weight penalty for her Ascot victory) to win by a short head. In September Chimes of Freedom was sent to Ireland for the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh and started second favourite behind Pharaoh's Delight, a British-trained filly who had won the Princess Margaret Stakes and the Phoenix Stakes. Chimes of Freedom produced her best performance up to that time, moving up alongside Pharaoh's Delight two furlongs out before drawing away to win by six lengths.
Wolfson paid a supplementary fee of $10,000 to run Roman Brother, as he had not been among the original entries for the race, which carried prize money of $212,150, making it the most valuable race ever run in New York. Ridden by John L. Rotz, Roman Brother tracked the leaders before taking the lead early in the straight and drawing away from his ten opponents to win by four and a half lengths. His win was marked at Ocala Stud Farm by the ringing of the old ship's bell which was used to mark major successes by the stud's produce. Despite losing his undefeated record when second to Hurry to Market at Garden State Park, Roman Brother started favorite for the Garden State Futurity at the same track on November 9.
In the early part of his three-year-old season, Gentilhombre was tried over longer distances, finishing third to Wollow in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury Racecourse and unplaced behind the same colt in the 2000 Guineas over a mile at Newmarket on 28 April. The colt was then brought back to sprint distances, beginning with the Cork and Orrery Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Ascot in June. Ridden by Paul Cook, he started at odds of 17/2 which included the Duke of York Stakes winner Three Legs (who started favourite), Be Tuneful, Petipa (Moyglare Stud Stakes) and Honeyblest. Cook sent Gentilhombre to the front and was never headed, overcoming the challenge of Be Tuneful and drawing away in the closing stages to win by three lengths.
As a two-year-old, Beldame won the Great Filly Stakes at Sheepshead Bay Race Track and the Vernal Stakes (wiring the field). When Beldame was three, she won twelve of her fourteen starts, earning the championship of her division. Her only losses came against older males. That year, she took the Alabama Stakes, the Gazelle Handicap (by ten lengths on a sloppy track), the Carter Handicap (against males by over two lengths under a stout hold), the Ladies Stakes, the Saratoga Cup (beating the year-older Belmont Stakes winner and Champion Three-Year-Colt, Africander), the First Special, the Second Special, the Dolphin Sakes, the Mermaid Stakes (winning by seven lengths and drawing away from the field even as she was being eased up), and the September Stakes.
On July 7, the horse, ridden by Mike E. Smith for the first time, won the inaugural running of the Grade II Los Alamitos Derby, beating a Kentucky Derby participant, Candy Boy, by four and a quarter lengths. On August 24, Shared Belief contested the $1,000,000 TVG Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar Racetrack against older horses, going a mile and a quarter for the first time and attempting to emulate his sire Candy Ride, who won the race in 2003. He was ridden again by Smith, who chose Shared Belief as his mount over Game On Dude. The gelding raced in midfield before moving up on the outside, taking the lead a furlong and a half out and drawing away to win by almost three lengths from the British challenger Toast of New York.
Caravaggio made his racecourse debut in a maiden race over five furlongs on the all-weather Polytrack surface at Dundalk Racecourse on 18 April. Ridden by Seamie Heffernan and starting at odds of 1/3 he took the lead approaching the final furlong and on "comfortably" by one and three quarter lengths from his stablemate Lundy. On 21 May the colt was switched to the turf and stepped up in class and distance for the Listed Marble Hill Stakes over six furlongs at the Curragh Racecourse. Starting the 4/7 favourite in a nine-runner field he tracked the leaders before taking the lead inside the final furlong and drawing away to win by two and quarter lengths from Mister Trader with the filly Roly Poly taking fourth place.
The 9th Division was involved in some of the heaviest fighting of the battle, and its advance in the coast area succeeded in drawing away enough German forces for the heavily reinforced 2nd New Zealand Division to decisively break through the Axis lines on the night of 1/2 November. The 9th Division suffered a high number of casualties during this battle and did not take part in the pursuit of the retreating Axis forces. During the battle the Australian Government requested that the division be returned to Australia as it was not possible to provide enough reinforcements to sustain it, and this was agreed to by the British and US governments in late November. The 9th Division left Egypt for Australia in January 1943, ending the AIF's involvement in the war in North Africa.
The Gurkha disputed the lead from the start before drawing away from his fifteen rivals in the last quarter mile to win "easily" by nine lengths. On 15 May The Gurkha was moved up sharply in class when he was sent to France for the Group One Poule d'Essai des Poulains over 1600 metres, with his owners paying a supplementary fee as he had not been among the original entrants. The race was run at Deauville as the race's traditional venue, Longchamp Racecourse was being redeveloped. With Moore again in the saddle he was made the 4/1 second choice in the betting behind the Aga Khan's unbeaten Zarak whilst the other runners included Crazy Horse (Horris Hill Stakes), Birchwood (Superlative Stakes), Dicton (Prix de Fontainebleau), Attendu (Prix La Rochette) and First Selection (Solario Stakes).
On his first run of 1997 Fly to the Stars was ridden by Jason Weaver and started 5/6 favourite for an eight-runner maiden over one mile at Doncaster Racecourse on 20 March and recorded his first win, drawing away from his opponents in the final furlong to win by seven lengths. The colt was then stepped up in class and sent to Ireland for the 2000 Guineas Trial Stakes at Leopardstown Racecourse for which he started favourite but was beaten a short head by the Jim Bolger-trained Lil's Boy. Despite his defeat he was then moved up to Group One class for the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh in May. He led the field into the straight but was outpaced in the closing stages and finished fifth of the six runners behind Desert King.
As in her previous race, she led from the start and drew away in the closing stages to win by two and three quarter lengths from Lily of Gold with the favored Beautiful Pleasure in third. On November 11 Countess Diana started the 2/1 favorite for the fourteenth edition of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, which took place that year at Hollywood Park Racetrack. Beautiful Pleasure and Love Lock opposed her again, but her closest rivals in the betting were Career Collection (winner of the Landaluce Stakes and the Sorrento Stakes) and Vivid Angel (Del Mar Debutante Stakes). Ridden as usual by Sellers, she tracked the 32/1 outsider Bay Harbor before moving into the lead half a mile from the finish before drawing away to win by a record margin of eight and a half lengths from Career Collection.
On 17 May at Newbury Racecourse Logician made his racecourse debut in a ten furlong maiden race for which he started the 3/1 favourite in a nineteen-runner field. Ridden by Kieran O'Neill he recovered from a slow start to take the lead approaching the final furlong before drawing away in the closing stages to win by two lengths from High Commissioner. Robert Havlin took the ride when the colt started 2/9 favourite for a minor race over the same distance at Newmarket Racecourse on 21 June and won by one and three quarter lengths and a short head from Away He Goes and Persuading. Two weeks later Logician was stepped up in distance for a handicap race over one and a half miles at Newbury and was made the 1/5 favourite despite being assigned top weight of 131 pounds.
Sound Man, who had won the Tingle Creek Trophy in December and the Comet Chase in February was made the 11/8 favourite ahead of Viking Flagship and Strong Platinum with Klairon Davis fourth choice in the betting at 9/1, Dancing Paddy made the early running from Sound Man and Viking Flagship with Klairon Davis held up by Woods in fifth. Sound Man took over the lead at the sixth and led from Viking Flagship with Klairon Davis moving up into third. After mistakes at the fourth and third last fences Klairon Davis turned into the straight in third behind Sound Man and Viking Flagship who looked poised to dispute the finish. Francis Woods, however, moved Klairon Davis steadily forward on the outside and jumped past the two leaders at the final fence before drawing away to win by five lengths.
Quinn retrained Assessor at the rear of the five-runner field before sending him into the lead in the straight and drawing away to win by four lengths. Nine days after his win at Doncaster Assessor contested the Irish St. Leger at the Curragh Racecourse and ran second to Vintage Crop, with Sonus, Drum Taps and Snurge in fourth, fifth and sixth. On 2 October the colt was sent to France for the Prix du Cadran over 4000 metres on heavy ground at Longchamp and started the 6/5 favourite ahead of ten opponents including Sonus, Turgeon, Oh So Risky (Triumph Hurdle, Prix Gladiateur), Dajraan (Prix Chaudenay) and Sought Out. Ridden by Reid, Assessor turned into the straight in fourth place, went to the front 300 metres from the finish, and pulled clear to win "easily" by six lengths.
Starting the odds-on favourite, she took the lead approaching the straight and got the better of a prolonged struggle with Millionreasonswhy to win by a neck, with the pair finishing almost fifteen lengths clear of the other three runners. Corey Nakatani took over the ride on My Miss Aurelia when the filly was stepped up to Grade I level in the Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park on October 8 when she started second favorite behind the Todd Pletcher-trained Stopshoppingmaria. My Miss Aurelia took the lead soon after the start and steadily increased her advantage, drawing away in the straight to win by five and a half lengths from Stopshoppingmaria without Nakatani having to resort to the whip. My Miss Aurelia's final race of the year was the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs for which she was made favorite ahead of the Spinaway Stakes winner Grace Hall.
Clemmie was ridden in all five of her races as a two-year-old by Ryan Moore. On her racecourse debut she started at odds of 5/1 in a maiden race over six furlongs at the Racecourse on 27 May in which he came from well off the pace to finish a close third behind Gasta and Now You're Talking. Despite her defeat she was stepped up in class and sent to England for the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot in June in which he came home seventh of the twenty runners behind the French filly Different League. On 2 July at the Curragh, Clemmie started 6/4 favourite for the Grangecon Stud Stakes and recorded her first success, taking the lead approaching the final furlong and drawing away to win by two and three quarter lengths from her stablemate Butterscotch.
Unknown to the Japanese admiral, the main American battle group under the command of Admiral William Halsey, Jr., departed the Leyte Gulf area on the evening of 24 October. Convinced that Kurita's Center Force had been turned back, Halsey took his powerful Task Force 38 in pursuit of the Japanese Northern Force, a decoy group composed of one fleet aircraft carrier (), three light carriers, two Ise-class hybrid battleship-carriers, and their escorts. The deception was a success, drawing away five fleet carriers and five light carriers with more than 600 aircraft among them, six fast battleships, eight cruisers, and over 40 destroyers. During the hours of darkness, Kurita's force navigated the San Bernardino Strait and shortly after dawn, in the Battle off Samar, attacked an American formation that had remained in the area to provide close support for the invading troops. Known as "Taffy 3", this small group comprised six escort carriers, three destroyers, and four destroyer escorts.Reynolds (1982), p. 156.
Suave Richard's trainer Yasushi Shono Suave Richard made his three-year-old debut in the Tokinominoru Kinen (a trial race for the Satsuki Sho) over 1800 metres at Tokyo on 12 February and started the 2.1/1 second favourite. Ridden by Hirofumi Shii he settled behind the leaders before staying on in the straight, taking the lead in the last 200 metres and drawing away to win by two and a half lengths from Etre Digne. In the 77th running of the Satsuki Sho at Nakayama Racecourse on 26 April he started second choice in the betting but although he finished strongly he was never able to reach the leaders and came home sixth behind Al Ain. He was then moved up in distance for the Tokyo Yushun over 2400 metres at Tokyo on 26 May in which he again made good late progress but failed by three-quarters of a length to reel in the winner Rey de Oro.
Kym also resents Rachel's choice in designating her best friend as maid of honor, relegating her sister to possible bridesmaid due to doubt over whether Kym would have the faculty to make an appearance at all. Rachel, in turn, resents the attention her sister's drug addiction is drawing away from her wedding, which is exacerbated by Kym's behavior at the rehearsal dinner, when she, amid toasts from friends and family, forces an opportunity to offer a strangely blanket apology for her past actions, as part of her twelve-step program. Underlying the family's broader dynamic is a tragedy that occurred several years earlier, which Kym retells at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. As a teenager, Kym was responsible for the death of her younger brother, Ethan, who was left under her supervision one day; driving home from a nearby park, an intoxicated Kym had lost control of the car, careening off a bridge and into a lake, where her brother drowned.
Hart 2008, pp 283 Taken completely by surprise and with their defences spread thin, the Allies were unable to stop the attack and the German army advanced through a gap in the Allied lines. Reaching the Aisne in under six hours, the Germans smashed through eight Allied divisions on a line between Reims and Soissons, pushing the Allies back to the river Vesle and gaining an extra 15 km of territory by nightfall. The rapid advance resulted in the capture of just over 50,000 Allied soldiers and over 800 guns by 30 May 1918, prompting Ludendorff to change the operational objective from merely drawing away the enemy forces from the right wing of the German Army to advancing the attack of the Seventh Army. This had never been the intention of the operation, and having come within of Paris on 3 June, the German armies were beset by numerous problems, including heavy casualties, a lack of reserves, fatigue and supply shortages.
Using safety as a momentum, Cox infused some extra class into the squad with Newcastle United's Paul Goddard and Oxford United's Trevor Hebberd. Hebberd's Oxford teammate Dean Saunders joined the club in October 1988, Derby's first £1m signing, the club reached the dizzy heights of 5th in the 1988–89 Division One table. This was Cox's team at its peak and, as Peter Shilton put it, it was a "battling fifth" and further investment was required if Derby were to maintain the surge back to their peak. Maxwell, however, was drawing away from the club; critical of attendances (The Baseball Ground as this point could hold only 25,000 spectators and only broke 20,000 on three occasions and this was an era when attendances across the football league were dropping) and at war with the football league as they blocked his attempts to add Watford to his portfolio of clubs and lent money to Tottenham Hotspur.
Stalker raced in second place and looked a likely winner a quarter of a mile from the finish but then began to struggle and finished fourth behind Moorgate Man, Bold Arrangement (later to finish second in the 1986 Kentucky Derby) and Firm Landing. Having apparently failed to stay the distance at Newcastle, the colt was brought back to six furlongs for the Gimcrack Stakes at York Racecourse on 21 August. He was the 17/2 fourth choice in the betting behind the filly Storm Star (winner of the Cherry Hinton Stakes) and the colts Prince Pecadillo and Lochonica (first and second in the Cock of the North Stakes at Haydock Park) in what appeared to be a substandard field for the Group Two event. With Mercer again in the saddle he took the lead from the start and set a strong pace, showing what Timeform described as "blistering speed" and drawing away in the closing stages to win by four lengths from Storm Star.
During his first season at the helm of PSG, the club experienced one of the greatest and unexpectedly successful seasons in its history by winning the 2003–04 Coupe de France and arriving second in the 2003–04 Ligue 1, just three points behind Lyon, qualifying for the 2004–05 Champions League. Halilhodžić's second season at the club, however, was not a success. From their opening Champions League group stage 0–3 home loss to Chelsea, to their domestic league struggling results, PSG never succeeded in replicating the winning form of the previous season. Going into the final round of Champions League group stage fixtures in December 2004, Halilhodžić's team still had a chance of advancing as beating CSKA Moscow at home would have seen PSG move on to the knockout stage. Even just a draw combined with group leaders Chelsea winning or drawing away at Porto would have ensured progress while a draw regardless of the other match outcome guaranteed at least a spot in the UEFA Cup round of 32.
On 12 March 1997, Klairon Davis attempted to repeat his 1996 success in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham and started as the 3/1 joint-second favourite behind the improving six-year-old Strong Promise and alongside Viking Flagship. Racing on firmer ground than in the previous year he was held up in the early staged but appeared outpaced on the final turn and finished fourth of the six runners behind Martha's Son, Ask Tom and Viking Flagship. On his final appearance of the sea on the season, Klairon Davis returned to Ireland for the BMW Chase at Punchestown on 22 April and started 11/10 favourite despite conceding seventeen pounds to his six opponents who included Idiot's Delight, Opera Hat and the British challenger Arctic Kinsman and Big Matt. After being challenged in the early stages by Opera Hat he took the lead and jumped well before drawing away over the last two fences to win the race for the second time, beating Big Matt by eight lengths with Idiot's Venture in third.
