Bush flying involves operations in rough terrain, necessitating bush planes to be equipped with tundra tires, floats, or skis. A bush plane should have good short take-off and landing capabilities. A typical bush plane will have wings on top of its fuselage to ensure that they do not make contact with any overgrowth in the landing area. They will normally have conventional "tail-dragger" landing gear as it has a greater aeronautic ability than tricycle landing gear, and is more suited to rough surfaces.
It could also be equipped with engines up to 220 hp, which was to top out at 190 knots (350 km/h) with a 170 kt (315 km/h) low-power cruise. The aircraft could be completed in either tricycle or tail- dragger configurations. The BD-4 first appeared in 1968 and thousands of plans were sold, hundreds were built, and many are still flying today. Early performance estimates were overstated; even with the large engines, speeds were more typically 130-150 kt (240–280 km/h).
The landing gear configuration on TMGs usually incorporates two fixed main wheels, allowing it to be taxied on the ground without a wing walker. While some TMGs have only one main wheel, with auxiliary trolley wheels on the wings for taxiing, it is becoming more common to find them being manufactured with tricycle and conventional (two fixed main wheels – i.e. a "tail-dragger") landing gear configurations. Since the additional drag of the stopped propeller and landing gear reduces their gliding performance, TMGs are seldom used in competition.
The Attacker was neither the only nor the first jet aircraft to be equipped with such an undercarriage, which was also used on the experimental Heinkel He 178 and several early Messerschmitt Me 262 aircraft. The chief designer at Vickers-Supermarine, Mr. J. Smith, claimed that testing had validated the performance of the tail-dragger undercarriage as acceptable. On 17 June 1947, the first navalised prototype, Type 398 TS413, conducted its first flight, flown by test pilot Mike Lithgow;Andrews and Morgan 1987, p. 271.
It is here that Mitchell references not only the underdog characters of NYC, but also the underdog places - such as the Fulton Fish Market; a reoccurring place of study in this water based collection. For example, Dragger Captain is “the story of an old salt in the fleet out of Stonington, Connecticut, that supplies the Fulton Fish Market with flounder”. But it is once again Mitchell's character selection in The Bottom of the Harbor that allows him to portray NYC in his signature matte style.
Mitchell and Captain Thompson soon find that they have compatible personalities, thus, allowing Mitchell to accompany Ellery during his drags. Ellery has to then drag for his own brother's body, giving us an insight as to the reason why Ellery looks upon life “with a droll world-weariness”.
May 1942 brought the updated RP-5A, differing primarily in the Righter O-15-1 engine driving in-line propellers instead of side-by-side, along with tail-dragger landing gear. The Army purchased this as the OQ-2A, which led to the US Navy buying a slightly modified version as the TDD-1, for Target Drone, Denny, 1. Navy models lacked the landing gear, which was useless on water. The OQ-2B had a lightened structure by drilling holes in the wing ribs.
Route was south from Salt Lake to Daisy Canyon then southwest and terminated at the Southern Pacific RR between Dolomite and Swansea. In recent years it has been badly damaged by vandals. In the 1960s, the hot springs in the valley became popular among nudists, and were eventually improved by volunteer labor, to include concrete tubs, a shower, a sink, and three outhouses (which the Park Service later replaced with concrete-lined latrines). The bus is 3508 mm (3.5 meters 11.5 feet) long without the solar arrays. From one edge of an extended radiator shade to another it is 6775 mm wide (6.7 m 22.23 feet); this includes the length of the two two-meter-wide radiator shades. The tail-dragger solar array is 5900 mm long (5.9m 19.36 feet) but it is normally at an angle of 20 degrees towards the sunshield. The array is in front of the sunshield segments shield deployment boom, which at the end of it also has a trim tab attached.
An Attacker FB2 on the ground, August 1952 The Supermarine Attacker was a navalised jet-propelled fighter aircraft, the first jet-powered aircraft to be introduced into FAA service. While originally designed to a wartime requirement for the RAF, it was not introduced until the early 1950s, and was ultimately developed for use aboard aircraft carriers. For a jet aircraft, the Attacker's design was unusual, with a tail-dragger undercarriage with twin tailwheels, as well as an unswept wing. The flight controls were relatively conventional, based on those of the Spiteful.
This aircraft, like most of its era, used tail-dragger landing gear which caused the aircraft to have a decided rearward tilt when landed. These aircraft introduced the Trapoklappe, a powerful ramp/hydraulic lift with a personnel stairway centered between the vehicle trackway ramps, that raised the rear of the aircraft into the air and allowed easy loading. A similar rear loading ramp even appeared in a somewhat different form on the nosewheel gear-equipped, late WW II era American Budd RB-1 Conestoga twin- engined cargo aircraft.

Especially a tail dragger can be pulled upside-down when landing with the banner. One German operator carried a knife with an extra long handle in every Super Cub, so that the pilot could cut it loose. If not, the best technique is to come in to land approaching slightly high, making certain that the aircraft, at the lowest possible speed, will touch before the banner. With experience, many pilots found that the best way to pick up is not to make the run-in at the height where the ground crew would see the grapple just above the ground.
The Attacker had several deficiencies, one of which was using the Spiteful tail-wheel undercarriage rather than a nose-wheel undercarriage, a configuration that resulted in the Attacker being considerably more difficult to land on an aircraft carrier. According to aviation author Bill Gunston, this tail-dragger undercarriage meant that, when operating from grass airfields, the jet exhaust would create a long furrow in the ground that "three men could lie down in".Gunston 1975, p. 130. However, according to aviation periodical Flight, claims of scorched or ploughed surfaces, even grass, were exaggerated.Flight, 15 May 1947, p. 446.
Float-equipped PA-11S at Seattle Renton in 1973 A small number of PA-11s have been modified to use a Tricycle landing gear. The PA-11 was one of the first aircraft to be used by Piper for experiments with the nose wheel (also known as tricycle gear) configuration. Although its original design is intended to be a tail-dragger, a modification was created to mount a nose wheel. The nose wheel is attached to the two rear engine mounts by y-shaped steel tubes attached to a steel tube with a shaft that slides freely with the wheel.
King & Winge By 1914, King and Winge had built or acquired two power halibut schooners, the ex-Ragnhild, now named the Tom & Al (presumably named after Tom King and Al Winge) and the Gjoa. The Tom & Al, 65' long, was built in 1900 and was still in operation as late as 1962 as a dragger and whaler under Eben and Frank Parker of Astoria, Oregon.Jacobi, Wayne, "King & Winge: Versatile Ship Comes Home," Seattle Times, January 5, 1962, page 33. In that year, the firm built to add to their halibut boats, their most well-known vessel, the King & Winge, originally a halibut schooner.
Corritore was born in Chicago, Illinois, United States. At the age of 12, he was first inspired after hearing the radio playing a Muddy Waters track. Self-taught on the harmonica, Corritore collected blues albums and later attended performances in blues clubs. He garnered playing tips and support from a number of those he saw perform, including Louis Myers, Little Mack Simmons, Carey Bell, Big Walter Horton, Big John Wrencher and Junior Wells. The Atlas XH-1 Alpha was the first prototype to emerge from the program. It was developed from an Alouette III airframe, retaining that helicopter's engine and dynamic components; modifications included the replacement of the original cockpit with a stepped tandem counterpart, the addition of a 20 mm cannon on the nose and the conversion of the undercarriage to a tail-dragger configuration. On 3 February 1985, the XH-1 conducted its maiden flight. The results of flight tests of the XH-1 were ultimately good enough to convince both Atlas and the SAAF that the concept was feasible, opening the door to proceed with the development of the Rooivalk.
It was developed from an Aérospatiale Alouette III airframe, retaining that helicopter's engine and dynamic components, but replacing the original cockpit with a stepped tandem one, adding a 20 mm cannon under the chin and converting the undercarriage to tail-dragger configuration. The XH-1 first flew on 3 February 1985,Air International June 1986, p.599. and soon embarked on a rigorous flight test program to examine the feasibility of a dedicated attack helicopter in southern African conditions. The results were ultimately good enough to convince Atlas and the South African Air Force to go ahead with the development of a dedicated attack helicopter – the Denel Rooivalk.
Design was headed by Konrad Eicholtz. By the time the prototype was ready to fly in October 1941, the war was already in progress and the Luftwaffe took over development. Like earlier tail-dragger designs, the Ju 252 would normally be difficult to load when parked, owing to the sloping floor. Junkers had already pioneered - with the earlier Junkers Ju 90's fifth and sixth prototype airframes during 1939 - a unique solution to this problem, the Trapoklappe, a hydraulically powered ventral rear loading ramp that possessed powerful enough operating mechanisms to lift the plane off its tailwheel, leveling the floor and allowing oversized cargo to be loaded directly forward into the fuselage.
A Denel Rooivalk attack helicopter, in service with the South African Air Force The Rooivalk project began in early 1984 under the auspices of the Atlas Aircraft Corporation, a predecessor of Denel Aviation. Faced with the increasingly conventional nature of the South African Border War, the South African Defence Force recognised the need for a dedicated attack helicopter and accordingly set along the process of developing a suitable aircraft. The Atlas XH-1 Alpha was the first prototype to emerge from the program. It was developed from an Aérospatiale Alouette III airframe, retaining that helicopter's engine and dynamic components, but replacing the original cockpit with a stepped tandem one, adding a 20 mm cannon on the nose and converting the undercarriage to tail-dragger configuration.
Originally he was known as Crawlin' James, a nickname he acquired from his habit of crawling around on stage whilst performing. Later on, Howlin' Wolf named him Tail Dragger because Jones often arrived late for gigs. By the early 1970s, Jones had become a full-time singer and he utilised notable backing musicians, including Willie Kent, Hubert Sumlin, Carey Bell, Kansas City Red, Little Mack Simmons, Big Leon Brooks, and Eddie Shaw. On July 11, 1993, in Chicago, Jones shot and killed the blues artist Boston Blackie (born Benjamin Joe "Bennie" Houston, November 6, 1943, in Panola, Sumter County, Alabama), following a heated dispute over payment that began a month earlier when both performers appeared at the Chicago Blues Festival.
Moore also credits actor Aaron Douglas for coming up with names for recurring 'knuckle-dragger' characters such as Tarn and Diana Seelix. Douglas stated that he felt a great deal of reluctance towards the idea of Tyrol becoming a cylon until he realized the expanded opportunities for the character.TV Guide Interview, March 2009, In the final podcast for the series, Moore acknowledged that the island Tyrol exiled himself to was in fact Britain (The original idea was that he settled on Vancouver Island, though because the idea of him settling Scotland was so popular with fans, that is what was made canon).Ronald D. Moore Battlestar Galactica podcast In the Netflix "Watch Instantly" streaming version of the series finale, Tyrol's decision to settle on an island is omitted.

Carrier borne combat aircraft are at a disadvantage when compared to land- based equivalents as they require wing-folding systems, which increase the aircraft's weight at the expense of payload. At the time, adaptions of single- engined tail-dragger land-based aircraft typically had poor visibility when landing. At some time in 1941, Miles became aware of the high accident rates for carrier landings and began private venture work on unorthodox configurations that might solve the visibility problem and also the complications of folding wings required for storage of ship-borne aircraft.Buttler, British Secret Projects: Fighters and Bombers 1935–1950 Midland Publishing p86 While contemplating these problems, George Miles visited the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment at RAF Boscombe Down, where he saw the Westland-Delanne tandem wing Lysander, which had a second wing with tip rudders in place of the conventional vertical stabilizer and tailplane arrangement.
''''Ellery Thompson (1899–1986) was an American fisherman, writer, and artist who lived at one time or another in the Connecticut shore towns of Stonington, Groton, Mystic and New London. In 1950 he published the autobiographical Draggerman's Haul: The Personal Story of a Connecticut Fishing Captain about the new technique of using dragger nets to sweep the bottom of the ocean; his work with Yale fishery biologists; the effect of Prohibition on ocean fishing; the efforts to make a feature film from his books; and his years on shore after leaving fishing in 1958, including a stint at Mystic Seaport Museum. He was a painter of ships and ocean scenes as well as a writer and storyteller, and was profiled in The New Yorker magazine in two 1947 articles by Joseph Mitchell. Come Aboard the Draggers, published in 1958, was a sequel to Draggerman's Haul.
Within a few years, Burgin was hired by Tail Dragger and began playing four nights a week on Chicago's West Side with seasoned blues performers such as Eddie Burks, Mary Lane, Johnny B. Moore, Lurrie Bell, Little Mack Simmons, Little Arthur Duncan, Jimmy Dawkins and Johnny Littlejohn, to name just a few. He toured the Midwest with Pinetop Perkins, who often had Dave Meyers, a member of the Aces, on bass. Burgin got his first taste of intensive national touring when he went on the road for two years with legendary Howlin' Wolf/Paul Butterfield drummer Sam Lay. In 1994, Burgin began what became a very popular residency at Smoke Daddy in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. The band featured Jimmy Burns on vocals and guitar, college mate Martin Lang on harp, Sho Komiya on bass, and either Kenny Smith (son of Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, the great Muddy Waters drummer) or Kelly Littleton (longtime drummer for Lil’ Ed Williams).
