According to legends the place derives its name from Jangama Muni who is said to have done penance in a cave in the munikkal Guhalaya. The place was initially called Jangamanad which later became chengamanad. Another account says that the name Chengamand is due to the special kind of soil .

Manthara is said to be incarnation of Alakshmi, the eternal consort of Kali Purusha. In her earlier life, she had done penance unto Lord Rudra and accumulated virtue to become one among many celestial dancers / apsaras in Swarga loka. Knowing well that she was an evil soul, Brahma ordained her to take birth as Manthara and create hurdles in establishing Rama Rajya on earth during Treta Yuga.

Panch Pandava Gufa [Hinglaj Mata Gufa] - established near Lalghati in Somnath, close to Suraj Mandir is a cave temple that was expanded to present form in 1949 by the late Baba Narayandas. Eknath Maharaj is believed to have done penance ('Tapyasya') at this very location travelling daily by foot from Daulatabad fort where he was employed. It seems there was an underground passage from Devgiri fort to this place which Eknath Maharaj would take. 'Datta' have showered blessings on Eknath Maharaj on the exact location where the Datta Mandir is located. At Shuli Bhanjan one can enjoy a cool breeze all round the year and is rapidly developing as one of the picnic spots.

It is said that he has done penance in the Cave of Kali Kholi in the form of a Dwarf Brahman (Vamana) and has given his darshan to Nandu Ji and their descendant are main pujari or bhagat from last seven Generations. Baba Mohan Ram's Cave is in the mountain of Kali Kholi, in Bhiwadi where his Akhand Jyoti (eternal fire) is present, Devotees come in a large number during the Doj and the Chemai Doj (Six Month Festival). Devotees offer Ghee to his Akhand Jyoti which removes their problems and they offer there bhog and Uppla (cow cake) to his ever lasting Dhuni which also cures all the problems caused to his devotees.
