Two different academic dress types exist for doctorates. The first relates to all Doctors of Philosophy which includes an academic dress of a festal gown of black cloth, fully lined in the sleeves and faced on the full length of the lapels with a width of 10 centimetres with scarlet silk, a black velvet bonnet trimmed with scarlet cord and tassel and a hood of scarlet cloth lined with scarlet silk. For doctors, other than doctors of philosophy and professional doctorates, and for masters of surgery, a festal gown of scarlet cloth, faced on the full length of the lapels to a width of 10 centimetres with coloured silk, with open pointed sleeves fully lined with coloured silk and turned back above the elbow should be worn for academic dress. This should be accompanied with a black velvet bonnet trimmed with gold cord and tassel and a black silk hood.

Instead, bachelors use a stole bearing the university seal at graduation ceremonies. Masters use hoods of the same Oxford simple [s1] shape as most other American institutions. They are generally lined with cardinal red to signify the university and are bound with velvet in a color to indicate the wearer's discipline of study. The Doctors had their own Society called Doctors' Commons, but following reforms in the nineteenth century their exclusive rights of audience were shared with barristers and the last Doctor of Law died in 1912. In the case of masters (including Masters of Philosophy) the shell is of black corded rayon, for Doctors of Philosophy the shell is of maroon cloth, for Doctors of Engineering, Education and Medicine the shell is of crimson cloth, and for higher doctors (Doctors of Science, of Letters and of Law) the shell is of red cloth. The hood for Doctors of Clinical Psychology is, according to the Calendar, of black corded rayon, fully lined with royal blue and scarlet taffeta, but in practice the hood supplied and actually worn is scarlet lined (but not bound) with royal blue taffeta. Upon its introduction in 1985, the hood for the degree of Master of Engineering was in Aberdeen shape (as for the other master's degrees) however this was changed to Burgon shape in 1997 to bring it into line with the new four-year first degrees (MMath, etc.).

Along with the hood appropriate to their degree, Bachelors wear "black stuff [gowns], with open pointed sleeves reaching to the foot of the gown", whilst Masters wear gowns of "black silk or stuff, with cord and button on the yoke and closed sleeves (with horizontal arm-slit) reaching to the foot of the gown and ending in a crescent shaped cut (the points of the crescent facing back)." Note that the ancient universities of Scotland, including Glasgow, award the degree of Master of Arts as a first degree; graduands to receive a Master of Arts degree as their first degree therefore wear the master's gown but with the appropriate hood pertaining to their undergraduate degree. In one such journal entry she describes her disappointment with the views in society about and among women, stating, "I so despise the idea that woman are not as competent to take care of themselves as men, that they cannot decide for themselves when to go to bed and when to get up, how much exercise to take, how much to pray and go to church. Still my greatest objection is to the class of girls who come here and to the social and political atmosphere of the place...I know of but one girl who declares herself for the rights of women" (September 22, 1866). In another journal entry she writes about the lack of recognition of woman who have earned advanced educational degrees, "That is the case with our clever girls -- they go to Germany and get the parchments, beautifully signed and sealed, that proclaim them to be doctors of philosophy, but no further consequences follow. They have nothing but the empty satisfaction of exhibiting their 'tickets'".

The University of Leeds, like other universities in the United Kingdom and many other countries throughout the world, has its own unique system of academic and ceremonial dress for undergraduates, graduates and senior officials. As at most other universities (exceptions include Oxford and Cambridge), graduands will wear the gown, hood and hat appropriate to the degree they are about to receive. All of the graduates' hoods incorporate one or more shades of green, and the Doctors of Philosophy, Education and Clinical Psychology are unique in the UK in having a green full-dress gown. Doctors in full dress wear a coloured (scarlet or green) gown of Cambridge doctors' shape; doctors in undress, and masters, wear a black gown similar to that worn by Masters of Arts at Oxford, but with a crescent-shaped portion cut out of both sides of the boot of the sleeve (this is type [m7] in the Groves classification system); bachelors wear a black gown similar to that worn by Bachelors of Arts at Oxford, but with a vertical strip of Leeds lace on the forearm seam and around the yoke; and undergraduates may wear the Oxford scholars' gown.
