In Frank Herbert's science fiction novel Dune—first serialized in Analog from 1963 to 1965 and then published independently in August 1965—the Baron Harkonnen employs a "cone of silence" when having a private discussion with Count Fenring. In the novel's glossary, Herbert describes the device as the sound-deadening "field of a distorter that limits the carrying power of the voice or any other vibrator by damping the vibrations with an image-vibration 180 degrees out of phase". The group discovers a device that contains Giygas, but it is being guarded by Pokey, who has been aiding Giygas all along and is using alien technology.

A Celestial Avatar that looks exactly like Trance, but secretly works for the Spirit of the Abyss. Virgil is first introduced as another of Trance's race that appears to offer her advice when she has amnesia and appears to be an ally. She acts as Seefra's mysterious radio host, pretending to be male through a voice distorter (though she has displayed the ability to take on her other voice without it) and seems to be an ally of the Andromeda crew, explaining to Beka about the history of the Seefra system and leading her to the Methus Diagram. However, when the crew travel to Methus-2 to fix the malfunctioning sun, Virgil reveals her true colors, luring Beka into a trap that she only escapes because of Doyle and confronting Trance.

In order to take advantage of the ability to reduce the ADC sampling rate, groups of channels must have their own down-conversion to baseband for sampling, thereby increasing the number of mixers and local oscillators (LO) or synthesizers. LOs and synthesizers are not trivial components in designs. In late December 2007, Greenbush Brewing’s founder Scott Sullivan had an unfortunate altercation with a router (no, not the technological kind) in the midst of a woodworking project, which at the time happened to be his profession. This bit of misfortune nearly cost him a digit and put him on the sidelines for a good period of months, during which time he began homebrewing. When he cracked open batch four (the beer we now call Distorter), everyone he gave it to told him that he could sell it, which he decided was a novel idea and set about figuring out how to do. Next came more homebrewing, a business plan, and a search for a place to sell the beer for which he was rapidly becoming well known. By early 2010 he had secured a place to make and sell beer, with a very helpful landlord who decked out the first iteration of the taproom and brewery that you see today. In early 2011 the preliminary work was wrapped up and he was ready to open.
