The Air Mines of Mistila (1988), written in collaboration with the poet Philip Gross, has a Latin American theme,Blurb on the back cover. with allusions to the novel Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo in a number of the poems. This collection won the Poetry Book Society Choice of 1988. Her next published book, Dirty Washing (1989) contains selected poems drawn from four previous books together with several new poems.

One of the United Kingdom's earliest feminist theatre groups, The Women's Street Theatre Group, was founded in 1970 and garnered national attention for interrupting the broadcast of the 1970 Miss World competition at the Royal Albert Hall. Many early members of The Women's Street Theatre Group and similar UK-based feminist theatre groups in the early 1970s had little to no formal theatre training. The first Women's Theatre Festival was held in 1973 in London to support emerging feminist theatre companies in the area. The Women's Theatre Group was founded in 1974 and the Monstrous Regiment Theatre Company was formed the following year. Many influential British feminist plays received their first performances including but not limited to Claire Luckham and Chris Bond's Scum: Death, Destruction and Dirty Washing (1976), Caryl Churchill’s Vinegar Tom (1976), and Pam Gems’s Queen Christina (1977).

The author went on to say that a previous article on the topic received both positive feedback for spreading awareness of what some considered a 'horrific tradition', as well as negative feedback from others for 'hanging Dhofar's dirty washing for the world to see and criticising a practice that they believe is purely Islamic,' commenting that she 'paid little attention to these criticisms because I know the practice is harmful and primitive', and 'our religion neither encourages the practice nor condemns it.' According to a small survey by human rights activist and statistician Habiba Al Hinai conducted in October 2013 and published in January 2014, 78% of 100 women interviewed living in the capital city of Muscat had undergone FGM. These women came from all parts of the country, each region showing a very high prevalence, and even though fewer women from Muscat itself had undergone FGM, they were still in the majority. Her findings contradicted the common belief that FGM was only widespread in the south.
