The premise of the sketch is that the joke is so funny that anyone who reads or hears it promptly dies from laughter. Ernest Scribbler (Michael Palin), a British "writer of jokes", writes the joke on a piece of paper only to die laughing. His mother (Eric Idle) also immediately dies laughing after reading it, as do the first constables on the scene.

They first cut out the heart of a cowardly man named Hjalli and bring it to Gunnarr but he sees from the cowardly trembling of the heart who its owner was. Then they cut out Högni's heart and he dies laughing. Gunnarr recognizes the heart of his brave brother but tells the Huns that now that he alone knows the location of the gold he can be certain that it will never be disclosed.

Walter shuts down the space station's engines to prevent the E.Y.E. from bringing the infection to Earth, then uploads a copy of AMI directly into the E.Y.E. in order to destroy it. The E.Y.E. continues to mock Walter, stating that it welcomes its death, as there are thousands of others just like it beneath Ancyra's surface, while it has succeeded in kill every human on the colony except Walter. The E.Y.E. dies laughing as it detonates the space station around itself and Walter. Walter finds himself in outer space, clinging to the floating wreckage of the space station.

Aware of the deadly nature of the joke, a brave Scotland Yard inspector (Graham Chapman) attempts to retrieve the joke, aided by the playing of very sombre music on gramophone records and the chanting of laments by fellow policemen to create a depressing atmosphere. The inspector leaves the house with the joke in hand, but also dies from laughter.
