Finally, Samsung is also rumored to be releasing a new version of its DeX dock that places the phone flat, allowing it to be used as a virtual keyboard or touchpad.

One pleasant surprise was Samsung's decision to include an on-screen keyboard button, which brings up a small version of the native full-screen Android keyboard when you're in DeX mode.

Beyond fiat, the company is also getting closer to launching a decentralized exchange (dex) which would allow buyers and sellers to trade tokens directly without the exchange acting as an intermediatory.

DeX on the other hand will support regular Android apps out of the box, and even companies like Adobe and Microsoft have worked with Samsung directly to optimize their apps for larger displays.

Apps optimized for DeX mode — Samsung's own email, gallery, and files apps are a few off the top of my head — aren't just phone-sized apps that open up on a larger screen.

Take the App Pair option, currently exclusive to the Galaxy Note 8, which lets you launch two app windows from one icon; or the Samsung Dex desktop environment, which (as this is Samsung) isn't quite working properly yet, but is something you can't do with a Pixel phone right now.

If you ask me though, Dex mode is actually the best way to clown on people in Fortnite, particularly other mobile players who are forced to fight back using sad, unresponsive touchscreen controls (though to do this, you will need an adapter with more ports that lets you hook up wired peripherals).

It also supports fast wireless charging, biometric security (iris, fingerprint scanning, and face recognition), 6GB RAM with 73GB of upgradable storage (mini SD cards up to 256GB), and compatibility with DeX, which is a dock, sold separately, that allows you to connect the phone to a monitor and use keyboard and mouse input.

DeX was never a particularly bad product; it just never completely delivered on its promise of turning your phone into a fully fledged desktop PC. The difference this year is that Samsung is focused less on having your smartphone replace your PC and more on having the two of them work better together.

The screen is a 24p LCD panel, not the higher-resolution 2560 x 1600 AMOLED on the Tab S4, there's 3GB of RAM instead of 4GB, 32GB of storage instead of either the 6493GB or 128GB options, a Snapdragon 450 processor instead of a Snapdragon 835, and no S Pen, iris scanner, or DeX support.

So even if Samsung adds other neat features like an in-display fingerprint reader or support for Samsung's Dex dock that would let the Tab S4 transform into a desktop (while also possibly functioning as a second monitor), I'm just not sure a $700 or more premium tablet running Android (or iOS for that matter) makes any sense.

While prior versions of DeX required you to plug the phone into a monitor and use a mouse and keyboard paired to it, the new version lets you plug a Note 10 into a Windows or Mac computer and brings up a window with all of your phone's apps that is accessible from your desktop or laptop computer.

It's a definitely a nice bonus, but the stylus doesn't really shine until you switch the Tab S4 into Dex mode—Samsung's custom desktop UI that it uses instead of something like Windows or Chrome OS.That's when the stylus and the keyboard dock become essential parts of a much more powerful system, which is kind of a problem because only the stylus actually comes bundled with the S83.

The night mode, which flips the interface to a dark shade in the evening, constantly forgets its settings; the screen brightness will aggressively dim itself to unreadable levels when I hold the tablet in landscape because my hand blocks the light sensor; search in DeX doesn't work on the first keystroke, requiring me to type "OOutlook" if I want to launch my email app; and I'll have to frequently reboot the tablet to get the Wi-Fi to work.
