A hunters group, the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association, supports the plan but objects to the plan of using a poison, 1080, because it can indiscriminately kill other species, including the ones the plan is trying to save.

Deerstalkers may be made of solid-coloured material, but they are most often found with houndstooth check, herringbone, or plaid patterns in the twill of a fabric which serves as camouflage. Modern hunting clothes, including deerstalkers, are often made with either a red-and-black or an orange-and-black check pattern or tweed for both this purpose and hunter safety, not least in actual deer stalking, for which purpose milliners originally constructed this type of cap.

From the 1950s, the government employed professional hunters to cull the deer population. Deer hunting is now a recreational activity, organised and advocated for at the national level by the New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association.

The New Zealand Deerstalkers Association and Tourism Industry Association welcomed the formation of the Game Animal Council but Forest and Bird, a large nationwide conservation organisation, sees it as an impediment to recreational hunters. The New Zealand Game Industry Board is a statutory marketing authority established by regulations made under the Primary Products Marketing Act 1953.

These are usually stiffened with pasteboard, cardboard or layers of heavy canvas. For a brief period during the 1970s some deerstalkers were manufactured with bills stiffened by the steam-cooked and pressure-molded wood fiber construct called Masonite. The Masonite tended to crack and break into segments. Over time, the Masonite insert was also apt to crumble at the corners.

The Conservation Act 1987 established Fish and Game New Zealand as a statutory body to advocate for recreational hunting and fishing in New Zealand. It has statutory responsibility for the sports of freshwater sport-fishing and gamebird hunting. They are funded predominantly from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses. The New Zealand Deerstalkers Association was established in 1937 to promote the interests of hunters in New Zealand.

A lake in the valley was named Lake Orbell in his honour. Orbell was one of the founders of the New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association and was its first president, holding the position from 1938 to 1952. In the 1953 Coronation Honours, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for scientific work. He retired from medical practice at the age of 70, and in later years lived in Mosgiel, near Dunedin.

The deerstalker is most often made of cloth, often light or heavy wool tweed, although deerstalkers made of suede, white cotton duck and even denim are not unknown. The cap is made of six (or eight) triangular panels with rounded sides which are sewn together. If the sides of the panels are cut in a way giving them slightly rounded shoulders midway, the crown will become more squared and flatter rather than hemispherical. The cap may be deep or shallow, barely touching the tops of the ears, according to the whim of the hatter.

There are also other Sherlock Holmes societies in the UK, such as The Crew of the S.S. May Day, founded in 1992 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Other Sherlock Holmes societies in the UK include The Deerstalkers of Welshpool, based in Welshpool, Wales and founded in 2001, and the Self- Important Scotland Yarders, the Sherlock Holmes society of Scotland, founded in 2010. The Reichenbach Irregulars, the Sherlock Holmes society of Switzerland, was founded in Meiringen in 1989. In 1992, together with the Bimetallic Question of Montreal, the Reichenbach Irregulars erected a plaque at the Reichenbach Falls commemorating Holmes's defeat of Professor Moriarty.

On 3 April, the government also announced that it would be holding submissions on the Arms Amendment Bill until 6pm on 4 April 2019. Gun owners including the Council of Licenced Firearms Owners chairman Paul Clark, Guns NZ chief executive Jim Yates, and Deerstalkers Association spokesperson Bill O'Leary criticised the short submission time frame on the proposed law change. By the evening of 3 April, MPs had received thousands of submissions relating to the gun law. On 8 April, the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee recommended some minor changes to the Arms Amendment Bill including allowing pest controllers to use semi-automatic arms on private lands and allowing people to keep heirloom weapons.
