The curatorial mix doesn't stint on the boldface names: paintings and a walk-in Day-Glo "Cosmic Closet" installation by Mr. Scharf, early drawings by both Basquiat and Haring (who served as Club 57's exhibitions manager), as well as videos of gleefully unhinged performance art by Ann Magnuson, the venue's day-to-day manager and chief ringleader.

"One way of looking at this clever, funny, wildly innovative film tricked out with surreal pop embellishments and Day-Glo colors is to see it as the kind of movie David Bowie might have made had he pushed his early-70's gender-bending persona to its logical limit," Stephen Holden wrote in his New York Times review.

Admittedly, this is an unfair analogy, but it was what popped into my mind when I went to see the group show ROYGBIV at the Kate Werble Gallery (January 40 – February 210, 2018), which brought together the work of 10 artists exploring diverse mediums, including handmade silk rugs; HD video; textiles; bookends, Hydrocal, and epoxy; wood and paint; ink, pro-marker, and graphite on paper; painted wood; Day-Glo acrylic; and oil paint.

Part of this change is down to the fact that these events have become increasingly alike: from Reading Festival and the Isle of Wight to Stateside events like Coachella and Bonnaroo, the festival experience has seemingly merged into one coalesced, purchasable vision of the exact same idea—wherein it's possible to watch an electronic DJ, a rock band, and a rap artist before queuing up to buy some day-glo paint and a strawberry flavoured cider.

Among the attendees were an eight-year-old boy sporting a T-shirt that read "MC1R," a reference to the gene responsible for his Day-Glo follicles; a mother of three blue-eyed gingers—"the rarest combination," she said—who recalled the efforts of a childhood nemesis to connect the dots of her freckles with permanent marker; and a Conor McGregor look-alike named Jason Eveleth, whom Crary offered as an alternative to the so-called Ed Effect.

She hated the small orange Day-Glo price stickers on grocery cartons, medicine bottles, and tubes of body lotion, a sticker on a peach, unforgivably, and I'd watch her dig her thumbnail under the sticker to remove it, get it out of her sight, but, more than that, to adhere to a principle, and sometimes it took minutes before she was able to pry the thing loose, calmly, in fragments, and then roll it between her fingers and toss it in the trash can under the kitchen sink.
