Regarding the album's title, Cadence said that he got it from his father who occasionally called him that because he was "conceived" after a party his parents went to. The album cover features Cadence sitting front and center on a stool while behind him are a group of people set up like a high school class photo. Featured on the cover are people who worked on the record like DJ Weezl, DJ Nato, Nik Kozub of the dance-punk group Shout Out Out Out Out and several of Cadence's ex-girlfriends. The picture was taken in the basement of The Black Dog, a former pub in Edmonton.
The music featured on the album draws heavily from the British post-punk genre, with influences such as Gang of Four and Public Image Limited highly audible. Alongside these more aggressive and angular sound are psychedelic and space rock influences, such as the group's love of Syd Barrett's early Pink Floyd. The name of the album was taken from Barrett's use of the I Ching tome in his song Chapter 24. Some songs show a nod to the then contemporary dance-punk revival, with "Trying to Be Someone Else for Free" featuring the 'four to the floor' drum beat adopted by bands like Liars and The Rapture.
Jarcrew was a five-piece dance-punk band from Ammanford, Wales. They were a relatively well known underground band (Jarcrew never enjoyed mainstream success) for approximately five years between 2000 and their early 2005 split. They played a bizarre mixture of electronica/house and prog-rock/punk/funk that baffled audiences up and down the UK (despite their somewhat unapproachable commercial nature they were offered some very lucrative support slots, including an elusive support for Scots rockers Biffy Clyro). Since disbanding, several Jarcrew off-shoots have emerged, most notably Future of the Left, a band that contained Jarcrew frontman Kelson alongside ex-mclusky members Andrew Falkous and Jack Egglestone.
To Each... has been seen in a more negative light by critics in comparison to the band's early music. AllMusic wrote that, with the album, "the group dropped much of the bleak dance-punk of early material in place of what sounds like a shallow attempt to seize the baton dropped by gloom giants Joy Division after the death of Ian Curtis", calling the record "a bit too mired in its own misery to make an impression on listeners." Trouser Press wrote: "The studied tedium of To Each... [...] snuffed the [band's] early promise, as the band buried itself in dreary rhythms and astonishing self- indulgence." The Quietus echoed similar sentiments.
Following the tours in support of their 2002 studio album Worship and Tribute, Glassjaw went on hiatus for a few years. The hiatus was brought about for several reasons including high stress derived from touring, personal differences among band members, and vocalist Daryl Palumbo's struggles with Crohn's disease. Palumbo was also beginning to write softer music that didn't fit Glassjaw's style, and started the dance-punk side project Head Automatica in 2004. During this time it was believed that Glassjaw had quietly broken up due to an extended period of inactivity, however in 2005 the band reformed and started writing and playing a handful of concerts.

Although Hot Hot Heat got its start as a hardcore band, by the time it made contact with Sub Pop, its sound had mutated into what would soon be known as dance-punk. The band stood at the forefront of a movement that would explode on the indie rock scene within another year. That release was followed up quickly by the band's first full-length release, Make Up the Breakdown, produced by Nirvana and Soundgarden producer Jack Endino. That album quickly found critical acclaim, and its singles "Bandages" and "Talk to Me, Dance With Me" received regular airplay on MTV and radio, including influential Los Angeles, California station KROQ-FM, on whose charts both reached No. 1\.

" In a mixed review, AllMusic's Andy Kellman stated: "The productions—the majority of which involve Doc McKinney and/or Cirkut, low-lighted by maneater dance-punk dud "False Alarm"—are roughly as variable in style as they are in quality. When pared down to its ten best songs, Starboy sounds like Tesfaye's most accomplished work." Alexis Petridis of The Guardian said, "There are things worth hearing on Starboy. It seems to capture an artist in a slightly awkward state of flux, unsure whether to cravenly embrace the kind of pop stardom that gets you on the shortlist for the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice awards or throw caution to the wind and do something more interesting artistically.
By the mid-2000s, the two genres were dropped, and the revivals of genres such as post-punk, garage rock, noise rock, and dance- punk (often tagged in as the post-punk revival of that time) took its place but the post-grunge and nu metal genres still had some success. Today, modern rock serves as an indie-driven radio format featuring new, young and recent indie rock bands and artists. Ranging from genres like reggae, folk, hip hop and EDM, common indie rock artists heard on the format today include Imagine Dragons, Young the Giant, Of Monsters and Men, Atlas Genius, The Neighbourhood, Arcade Fire, Twenty One Pilots, The 1975 and Bastille. Good Morning Revival has received generally mixed reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic. About.com writer Daniel Wolfe said the band's decision to ape the Killers made the record "sound a little less gloomy". AllMusic reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine viewed the album as "desperate trend-chasing", piggybacking on two trends that rose to prominence since the band's 2002 breakthrough album: "dance-punk and '80s fetishism". In a review for Blender, music critic Andy Greenwald said the album was full of "Disney-channel-ready pop" that was "buffed and Pro-Tooled almost beyond recognition". Mike Haydock of Drowned in Sound said the record was "about as punk rock as the ironed-in creases on David Cameron’s jeans", and that purchasing the album was "both pointless and foolish".
John Davis, Harris Klahr, Christopher Richards, and Matt Borlik formed Q and Not U in the summer of 1998 and began playing shows in the D.C. area later that November. They released their first album, No Kill No Beep Beep, in late 2000. It was marked by strongly rhythmic compositions with dissonant guitar and bass, though each song was built around unique melodies and danceable beats that cut through and rode on top of the swells of noise. Several reviewers described the music as "catchy", and this quality of oblique yet upbeat and endearing musicality would be a trademark of the band's future work, setting them apart from their aurally less forgiving D.C. hardcore peers and bringing them more into line with the budding dance-punk scene.
Stylistically, the band has been labeled as "indie rock, post-punk revival, dance-punk, dance-rock, and art rock." The band is notable for its use of Russian avant-garde imagery in album and single covers designed by Matthew Cooper. Examples include: "You Could Have It So Much Better", which references a 1924 portrait of Lilya Brik by Alexander Rodchenko; "Take Me Out", which references One-Sixth Part of the World, also by Alexander Rodchenko; "This Fire" which references Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge by El Lissitzky; and "Michael", with single art based on A Proun by Lissitzky. The song "Love and Destroy" was inspired by the scene of disorder made by Margarita, a character of Michael Bulgakov's "The Master and Margarita", in the apartment of the literature critic Latunzky.
Founded in Christchurch, New Zealand, Nick Harte has played in many New Zealand bands such as the CM Ensemble, Hiatus, The Incisions, Montessouri, Laudanum, Palace of Wisdom, Luxor Dance Ensemble, Urinator, Solaa, The Brunettes, and Pig Out. Harte & McDonald performed a Shocking Pinks gig at the Media Club in his hometown of Christchurch in December, 2003. This performance was attended by Tim Baird who ran local label Pinacolada Records; Baird subsequently funded and released the original version of the Shocking Pinks' debut album 'Dance the Dance Electric' on February 14th, 2004. This release featured a full-band lineup and introduced Harte's sound, which nodded to the sound of classic New Zealand bands such as The Clean and The Bats, as well as My Bloody Valentine's shoegaze sounds, and a budding dance-punk scene.
Dance-punk was revived among some bands of the garage rock/post- punk revival in the early years of the new millennium, particularly acts such as LCD Soundsystem, Clinic, Death from Above, Liars, Franz Ferdinand, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party, You Say Party, the Faint, the Rapture, Shout Out Out Out Out, and Radio 4, joined by dance-oriented acts who adopted rock sounds such as Out Hud,M. Wood, "Review: Out Hud: S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D.", New Music, 107, November 2002, p. 70. or Californian acts like !!! and Moving Units. In the early 2000s Washington, D.C. had a popular and notable punk-funk scene, inspired by Fugazi, post-punk, and go-go acts like Trouble Funk and Rare Essence, including bands like Q and Not U, Black Eyes, and Baltimore's Oxes, Double Dagger, and Dope Body.
In January 2009 Roscoe Evans made his debut with the band and the band's sound immediately shifted towards a new wave or dance-punk sound. The band headed back to the studio to lay down two more songs Tell Me You Do and Who Needs Loves Anyway?. The songs would be released on a two-song single CD, and the band would spend 2009 performing a number of well received shows in the Upper Midwest, and be nominated by the Isthmus (newspaper) as one of Madison's best new bands. In 2010 the band returned to the studio to record four more songs, which added to the previous two would make up a 6-song EP. The band would also be nominated for a MAMA for best rock song.
The term "progressive rock" (or "prog rock") was originally coined in the 1960s for music that would otherwise be described as "electronic rock," but the definition of "prog" later narrowed into a specific set of musical conventions - as opposed to a sensibility involving forward-thinking or experimental approaches. Electronic rock is also associated with industrial rock, synth- pop, dance-punk, indietronica, and new wave, with electroclash, new rave, post-punk revival, post-rock, considered as subgenres. Sometimes, certain other electronic subgenres are fused with rock, like trance and techno, leading to the use of the terms trance rock and techno rock, respectively. Heavy metal, a major subgenre of rock, is sometimes mixed with electronic and its subgenres, inspiring terms such as electronic metal, electronic dance metal, trance metal and techno metal.
In a positive review of the album for Pitchfork, Nate Patrin stated that the mood "stands out the most", and that "the paranormal angle to this album is simultaneously odd and mournful, with enjoyable quirks like Hatori's deadpan rapping throughout and some characteristically goofy interjections from Reggie Watts on 'Housekeeping' offset by more uncertain perspectives and anxious melodies." Elsewhere, Patrin noted that the different styles of the album—"occasional leanings towards deep-bass microhouse revival ('Empty Pool') and M.I.A.-goes-!!! dance-punk ('10th Floor Ghost Girl')[, ...] the rickety but sinuous acid-jazz charge of 'Emerald Tuesday'; the title track's codeine Tropicalia; [and] the swooning acoustic-guitar soul of closer 'Check Out'"—are "engaging" and "sound [...] unconcerned with trendwatching. They reveal how many possibilities Cibo Matto have always been open to".
The band subsequently became a five-piece, comprising Roman, Collins, David Milone (Vocals/Guitar) (who replaced original guitarist/singer Tommy Williams in 2005), Gerard Garone (Keyboards), and P.J. O'Connor (Percussion), and teamed up with James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy's DFA Productions to produce their second album. This collaboration signalled a new direction for the band, merging the guitar punk of their first album with electronic and dance music influences to create a dance-punk sound similar to other DFA-affiliated artists such as The Rapture. Gotham! was released in 2002 on Gern Blandsten, described as "half dance party, half political rally", leading the band to mainstream recognition and international success. The band recorded their third album, Stealing of a Nation, in a basement studio in Brooklyn with Max Heyes, and it was released in September 2004, to a poor critical reception.
Age of Consent is an English band from London, England. The indie pop duo consists of Joe Reeves and Darren Cullen who both started the band a year after the disbandment of their first group, Shitdisco, a Glasgow-based dance- punk band. The band is named after the song of the same name by New Order. Reeves and Cullen play a version of electronic dance music considered to fall under the gothic pop label and their self-described sound is considered “guitar-crazy and danceable” The band became well-known when their music was featured in the 2013 hit video game, Grand Theft Auto V. The game features two songs by the band including "Colours", an original song written for the game and is featured on the game's soundtrack, and their 2012 second single "Heartbreak" both featured in the in-game's indie radio station Radio Mirror Park.
The group has an upbeat party rock musical style, which has been dubbed "grit pop" or "dance punk", drawing comparisons to Cake, Franz Ferdinand, and Modest Mouse. Their energetic live performances have been described as "frenetic" and "spaced out" and "extremely physical" and have been compared to early Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their diverse style can be attributed to their varied musical background: "singer Ezra Huleatt started off studying jazz, guitarist William Longyear Mayo was an R&B;/Hip Hop session musician, bassist Krisana Soponpong an 80s synth-pop revivalist, and drummer Jason Holmes an orchestral and theatre percussionist." Their 2013 EP Chiaroscuro marked a change in the band's musical style, incorporating elements of late 70s/early 80s glam, progressive, psychedelic and dance-pop music including the influences of acts such as The Who, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Queen, Genesis, Talking Heads, The Bee Gees, and Vangelis's film scores.
