The team knew that when the AI system — known as Dactyl — was controlling a real robot hand, the base of the hand might not be positioned at the same angle each time.

When it was given a real cube, Dactyl put its training to use and solved it on its own, and it did so under a variety of conditions it had never been explicitly trained for.

Dactyl, the researchers told me, starts out every test "learning" what its environment is like — which direction gravity is pointed, how its fingers are working at this moment, what other sources of resistance or distraction are present.

It's not perfect; researchers say Dactyl only actually solves the Rubik's Cube about 60 percent of the time when 15 rotations are required—and 20 percent when cube's scramble is at maximum difficulty requiring 26 or more turns.

And for the software that powers Dactyl to learn how to utilize all of those joints in a way a human would, OpenAI put it through thousands of years of training in simulation before trying the physical cube solve.

OpenAI sees the feat as a leap forward both for the dexterity of robotic appendages and its own AI software, which allows Dactyl to learn new tasks using virtual simulations before it is presented with a real, physical challenge to overcome.

Will Shortz wasn't particular about that, but asked if I could make every clue end in a T. Having made a puzzle where every clue was a double dactyl, I figured (correctly) that making one where all the clues ended in a T would be no sweat.
|

Dactyl is hardly the first robot to do things that some humans can't — robots used for extremely delicate precision surgery have been around for a while — but playing with a manipulable human toy in the same way as many humans do it is a new achievement in robotics.

In fact, Dactyl got so good at correcting for handicaps that the researchers told me they eventually had a hard time telling when part of their system was broken; usually, it's easy to tell when a part is broken because the robot won't work, but after training, the hand was compensating so effectively for malfunctioning joints and sensors that it was often tricky to figure out that something had gone wrong.

Galileo recorded 47 images of Dactyl over an observation period of 5.5 hours in August 1993. Ida has a moon named Dactyl, official designation (243) Ida I Dactyl. It was discovered in images taken by the Galileo spacecraft during its flyby in 1993. These images provided the first direct confirmation of an asteroid moon. At the time, it was separated from Ida by a distance of , moving in a prograde orbit.

On August 28, 1993, Galileo flew within of the asteroid 243 Ida. The probe discovered that Ida had a small moon, dubbed Dactyl, measuring around in diameter; this was the first asteroid moon discovered. Measurements using Galileo Solid State Imager, Magnetometer and NIMS instrument were taken. From subsequent analysis of this data, Dactyl appears to be an SII-subtype S-type asteroid, and is spectrally different from 243 Ida. It is hypothesized that Dactyl may have been produced by partial melting within a Koronis parent body, while the 243 Ida region escaped such igneous processing.

The body is more or less cylindrical in shape. The major first pereopod (the snapping claw) is very large, with the palm (carpus) more than twice as long as the fingers. "She Left, I Died" was the third and last Lewie composition he recorded for the Terry Dactyl catalogue just before leaving the band. After the demise of Terry Dactyl, Lewie had initially looked likely to remain a part of a one-hit wonder group. However, he continued to write and make records, now as a solo artist for Sonet, between 1974 and 1976 including the titles "Piggy Back Sue" and "The Swan" which were both played by BBC Radio London disc jockey Charlie Gillett, who would regularly feature them on his Honky Tonk radio show. At this time, he also helped form the short-lived band the Jive Bombers that played the established London gig circuit at such venues as the Hope and Anchor, the Greyhound, the 100 Club and the Marquee.

Avelyn, a promising young monk at St. Mere-Abelle begins learning the use of the powerful gemstone magic, but eventually leaves the Church after finding it to not be the holy place he had hoped for and receiving a vision of the awakened demon dactyl. It will be up to these three, along with a group of friends and allies, to save the world from the demon dactyl, Bestesbulzibar, and his dark force of goblins, powries and fomorian giants. In order to accomplish this feat Elbryan and his friends take the people of the Timberlands, whose homes have been destroyed by the demon's army, and forge them into a guerrilla fighting force. With them, Elbryan Wyndon and his friends strike quickly at the edges of the enemy, doing all in their power to weaken them.

Offworld holds the ship's stash of dactyl, a mineral required for most of the creatures on the ship. The mining ship is soon attacked by pirates, which causes them to launch an emergency landing on a moon close to Bandomeer. The Jedi, Offworld, and Offworld's rival faction must work together to fight against predators and other threats. Offworld's uprising is also stopped during this truce, and once the ship is repaired, the factions travel together to Bandomeer.

The binary nature of 243 Ida was discovered when the Galileo spacecraft flew by the asteroid in 1993. Since then numerous binary asteroids and several triple asteroids have been detected. The broad carpi of the claw-bearing chelipeds have parallel sides and are twice as long as they are wide. These features distinguishes it from the otherwise similar Petrolisthes cinctipes. Aydrian Wyndon is the son of Elbryan and Jilseponie (Pony) Wyndon. He was taken and raised secretly by Lady Dasselrond, the Queen of the Touel'alfar. The elves had allowed Pony to believe her child had died in the womb in her spirit battle with Father Abbot Markwart (who at the time was possessed by the spirit of the Demon Dactyl). Also kept secret from all, including the elves, was that the Demon Dactyl's spirit had infected the child's soul, and left a piece of itself there.

Bux (Meg Lyons) vocals, Greg Yourbassist (Greg Urbaitis) on Bass, Pterry Dactyl (Garry Cook) on drums, Brother Cleve (Bob Toomey) on keyboards/accordion (1st ½), Sandy Beach (Sandy Grant) on keyboards (2nd ½). Swinging Erudites "Walk with an Erection" became a hit and was also heard and liked by Susanna Hoffs.

During the early 1970s, Brett Marvin toured the UK blues club and university music circuit, having signed with the Robert Stigwood Agency while appearing on television in Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, and the Netherlands. In 1971, the band performed in a concert with Son House. Shortly after this, Gibson and Pitts dropped out of touring. Lewie had begun writing for the band, and his "Seaside Shuffle" was released as a single under the band name Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs, a recording that included all six members of Brett Marvin.

In The Demon Awakens, this volcanic mountain is the unholy lair of the demon dactyl Bestesbulzibar, but becomes a site of holy power after Avelyn Desbris slays the monster. Demon dactyls work magic through the power of earth, and has also been described as hell magic. Specifically, they draw power from magma, and their magic grows more powerful when they are closer to it. The only known demon dactyl, Bestesbulzibar, has been known to attack enemies with waves of lava and magically animated stone statues. He also had the power to fire out black or red (the red were more powerful and presumably he needed to near magma to use them) bolts of lightning that he could guide with his own will.

Avelyn remained with the resistance run by Elbryan and Pony, using his magic to defeat the hordes of goblins, giants and powries that served as the Dactyl's armies. Avelyn was later killed during his duel with the Dactyl in Mount Aida where he managed to destroy the Demon's physical form. However, even in death, Avelyn's name was remembered. His former Master in the Church, Master Jojonah, came to embrace Avelyn's belief that the Church was corrupted and he began preaching Avelyn's ways to other Brothers, most notably Braumin Herde.

In the Dutch province Friesland this type of instrument is known as a 'kuttepiel'. In the American upper-Midwestern states of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the closely related stumpf fiddle or pogocello originated in Czech communities and adds small cymbals, strings, and a drum. A similar instrument, the batih, is found in Ukraine. The 'Zob Stick' variation of this instrument was constructed and named in 1968 by percussionist and songwriter Keef Trouble of the band Brett Marvin and the Thunderbolts and Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs. It is now, with the term ‘Lagerphone’, the most commonly used name for this instrument.

Specifically, it describes a practice already in use, known as modal rhythm, which used the rhythmic modes. In 1992, the band performed at The Town & Country Club. In 1993, the Brett Marvin released a new album, Boogie Street (Exson Music Ltd.), with the addition of a new bass guitarist, Peter Swan. In 1998, Brett Marvin was featured on two compilation albums, Gutbucket (EMI Records) and Tony McPhee & Friends (BGO Records), and released a CD version of Alias Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs.

In September 1994, Atari Corp. and Williams Entertainment announced their partnership that included plans to update and release some of Williams' early arcade games for the Jaguar such as Defender, Joust and Robotron, with Atari handling the publishing of these titles. Six months later it was announced that, alongside Mortal Kombat III coming to the Jaguar as a result of their partnership, Defender 2000 and Dactyl Joust were in development for the system. It was also revealed that Jeff Minter, who was previously involved with Tempest 2000, was working on the game and that it would feature three gameplay modes.

Trouble's association with Jona Lewie goes back to 1969, and later both were members of Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs. In 1986 the first recordings of Trouble's Oasis and Mix 'n’ Mingle for the album Oasis took place at Lewie's home studio in Streatham, with keyboard musician, arranger and composer Tony O'Malley, guitarist Neil Hubbard and engineer Pete Ker, producer for Arthur Brown and co-writer of Brown's Fire. Trouble had secured a 45rpm single record deal with Rodd Buckle (Habana Music) for the release and distribution of Mix 'n’ Mingle. Because of master tape release difficulties and lateness of the production at the Lewie studio, the record deal fell.

Picoindentation of Bouligand Structure in Dactyl Club The Bouligand structure found in many natural materials is credited with imparting a very high toughness and fracture resistance to the overall material it is a part of. The mechanisms by which this toughening occurs are many, and no one mechanism has yet to be identified as the main source of the structure's toughness. Both computational work and physical experiments have been done to determine these pathways by which the structure resists fracture so that synthetic tough Bouligand structures can be taken advantage of. The "dactyl," as a foot, is — u u; the name comes from the Greek for "finger," because it looks like the three bones of a finger, going outward from the palm. The principal colon of dactylic verse is the "hemiepes" or "half-epic" colon, — u u — u u — (sometimes abbreviated D). The two short syllables (called a biceps element) may generally be contracted, but never in the second half of a pentameter, and only rarely in the fifth foot of a hexameter. The clubbing appendages of the Odontodactylus scyllarus (peacock mantis shrimp) are made of an extremely dense form of the mineral which has a higher specific strength; this has led to its investigation for potential synthesis and engineering use. Their dactyl appendages have excellent impact resistance due to the impact region being composed of mainly crystalline hydroxyapatite, which offers significant hardness. A periodic layer underneath the impact layer composed of hydroxyapatite with lower calcium and phosphorus content (thus resulting in a much lower modulus) inhibits crack growth by forcing new cracks to change directions. This periodic layer also reduces the energy transferred across both layers due to the large difference in modulus, even reflecting some of the incident energy.

As king he threw the lands into war and was eventually defeated by the King's Brother Midalis who fought alongside Aydrian's mother Pony, his former friend who was a ranger-in-training with him Brynn Dharielle, a Jhesta Tu mystic Pagonel, a large barbarian ranger Andacanvar, and the dragon Agradeleous. During the battle Aydrian displayed his gemstone power by bringing his father's decayed corpse back to life. However, as his father became whole he regained control of himself and with Pony they used a soul stone to attack their son's spirit, only to find the Demon Dactyl there.

One character proved particularly enduring, a dinosaur called Fresco-Le-Raye. Up to his death, J Edward Oliver continued to create Fresco strips which can be seen on his official website. (The site also features other strips, such as The Invisible Man, a staple of his Record Mirror years.) Other work at that time included promotional art for a single by Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs and UK records. In November 1977, the Record Mirror strip was deemed not contemporary enough and was ended. Oliver went to work for IPC Magazines Ltd, creating comic strips including Buster's Master Mind (1980-1983), Cliff Hanger (1983-1987) and Vid Kid, as well as drawing The Champ in Whizzer and Chips from 1979 to 1981.

A third example that mixes the two effects comes from I.42, where Juno pouts that Athena was allowed to use Jove's thunderbolts to destroy Ajax ("she hurled Jove's quick fire from the clouds"): : This line is nearly all dactyls except for the spondee at -lata e. This change in rhythm paired with the harsh elision is intended to emphasize the crash of Athena's thunderbolt. Virgil will occasionally deviate from the strict rules of the meter to produce a special effect.

To the two existing species of rhythm, the ison, in which the arsis and thesis are equal (as in the Dactyl and Anapaest), and the diplasion, in which the arsis is twice the length of the thesis (as in the Iambus and Trochee), he added a third, the hemiolion in which the length of the arsis is equal to two short syllables, and that of the thesis to three, as, in the cretic foot, the paeons, and the Bacchic foot, though there is some doubt whether the last form was used by Olympus. Much research was done by Hellenistic Greek scientists and craftsmen on the design of artillery pieces. The main parameter that determines the sizes of all parts of the machine is the weight of the projectile or the length of the bolt (arrow). The fundamental size characteristic is called the hole diameter; it is the same as the diameter of the spring (which is a bunch of sinew rope). This and other projects with Calderon including The Garden of Suburban Delights have been exhibited in Europe and the US. In December 2007, the project space at the Whitechapel Gallery in London showed his slide show of found internet photos, entitled You Are Only What You See. The work was available at the time bound together in 10 publications of 100 images each, and there was a separate catalog of original photos by Waplington called Double Dactyl (2008). Waplington worked on a major book project with the fashion designer Alexander McQueen during 2008/2009, called Working Process (2013), the title refers to both McQueen's working process as a fashion designer and Waplington's working process as an artist making photo books. In March 2015 this project became the first one-person exhibition by a British photographer in the main exhibition space at Tate Britain in London.

The Funny Company group resembled a club not unlike a Junior Achievement organization, and most of the time, the stories would revolve around the Company being hired for various jobs to make a little money (doing yard work, house cleaning, babysitting, etc.) or doing something for charity (such as putting on shows). As time went on, the Company decided to make Shrinkin' Violette a movie star and were on their way to Hollywood. Members included leader Buzzer Bell (rarely seen without his Funny Company visor), inventor Jasper N (for National) Parks, club secretary Polly Plum, rotund Merry Twitter (the giggly Betty Boop-soundalike club treasurer), club mascot Terry Dactyl (an actual pterodactyl, who was frozen for many years ago, in the prehistoric times), shy Shrinkin' Violette (who could literally become smaller if she became embarrassed), and two Native American adults--Super Chief (named after the Santa Fe Railroad's crack passenger train) whose voice was an air horn of a single-chime railroad locomotive, and his translator Broken Feather. Another adult lending a hand was Professor Todd Goodheart with his supercomputer, the Weisenheimer.
