Azanza gave orders that they be arrested, but without revealing the motives of their conspiracy in order to avoid excitement among the populace. All the conspirators were apprehended and spent many years in prison.

The conspirators then intended to proclaim the independence of Mexico, declare war on Spain, and kill or expel the Peninsulares. To accomplish this, they were counting on 1,000 pesos of silver, two pistols, and some 50 cutlasses and machetes to initiate a popular uprising under the patronage of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Because of this, the conspiracy became known as the Conspiracy of the Machetes. After the successful outcome of the rebellion, the plan was to appeal to the people to decide what form of government should be established in Mexico.

165–173 In June 1900, early in the Boxer Rebellion, Keyes led a mission to capture a flotilla of four Chinese destroyers moored to a wharf on the Peiho River. Together with another junior officer, he took boarding parties onto the Chinese destroyers, captured the destroyers and secured the wharf. The ships' K2 chronometer was left on the Bounty, but William Peckover had his own pocket watch that Bligh used to keep time. At the last minute the mutineers threw four cutlasses down into the boat.

48–49 When Paine finally attained the quarterdeck, he described a scene of confusion: > The Captain was bawling to square the yards and stop the Ship's way; but > with very little attention from the Ship's Company who impressed with the > idea of Chinese pirates were alone intent in cutting and slashing away upon > the vessel's rigging and sail and preventing the China-men from coming on > board ... (The Chinese) clambered up the Fore-chains, impelled no doubt with > the fear of their vessel sinking after receiving so violent a shock; this > with the extreme darkness of the night and the confusion of voices crying > out, "a light, a light, a cutlass, a cutlass, a handspike, here they come!" > with the addition of the unintelligible jargon of the affrighted Chinese. Those Chinese sailors who reached the English ship's deck were attacked with cutlasses and hurled back overboard, despite making "piteous cries" for mercy. The sinking Chinese vessel also disappeared quickly astern.

As the trawlers had their nets down, they were unable to flee and, in the general chaos, Russian ships shot at each other: the cruisers Aurora and Dmitrii Donskoi were taken for Japanese warships and bombarded by seven battleships sailing in formation, damaging both ships and killing a chaplain and at least one sailor and severely wounding another. During the pandemonium, several Russian ships signalled torpedoes had hit them, and on board the battleship Borodino rumours spread that the ship was being boarded by the Japanese, with some crews donning life vests and lying prone on the deck, and others drawing cutlasses. More serious losses to both sides were only avoided by the extremely low quality of Russian gunnery, with the battleship Oryol reportedly firing more than 500 shells without hitting anything. After twenty minutes' firing the fishermen saw a blue light signal on one of the warships, the order to cease firing.

Though a fairly small engagement and a short lived victory, the storming of the fortifications at Omoa was the scene of an event that would be repeatedly depicted by British engravers for years to come. Captain William Dalrymple, in his letter to Lord George Germain dated the 21 October 1779, wrote: > Your lordship will pardon my mentioning an instance of an elevated mind in a > British tar, which amazed the Spaniards, and gave them a very high idea of > English valour: not content with one cutlass, he scrambled up the walls with > two; and meeting a Spanish officer without arms, who had been roused out of > his sleep, had the generosity not to take any advantage; but presenting him > with one of his cutlasses, told him, "You are now on a footing with me." This incident was first put into print by William Humphrey in 1780, and later by John Thornton in 1783, John Record about 1785, and an unknown engraver for The Gentleman's and London Magazine: Or Monthly Chronologer in 1789.

In July 1745 two traders, James Dunning [one of the traders that had been banned in 1734] and Peter Tostee appeared in Philadelphia claiming that they had been robbed on 18 April: > ... as they were returning up the Allegheny River in canoes, from a trading > trip, with a considerable quantity of furs and skins, Peter Chartier, late > an Indian Trader, with about 400 Shawnese Indians, armed with guns, pistols > and cutlasses, suddenly took them prisoners, having, as he said, a captain's > commission from the King of France; and plundered them of all their effects > to the value of sixteen hundred pounds. The Pennsylvania provincial council issued an indictment of "Peter Chartier of Lancaster County ... Labourer [who], being moved and seduced by the instigation of the Devil ... falsely, traitorously, unlawfully and treasonably did compass, imagine and intend open war, insurrection and rebellion against our said Lord the King." Chartier's landholdings in Pennsylvania, totaling some 600 acres, were seized and turned over to Thomas Lawrence, a business partner of Edward Shippen, III. Chartier led his Shawnee band to Lower Shawneetown on the Ohio River where they took refuge for a few weeks.

" De Soto determined to attack the town, and in the battle that followed, Elvas records: "The Indians fought with so great spirit that they, many times, drove our people back out of the town. The struggle lasted so long that many Catholics, weary and very thirsty, went to drink at a pond near by, tinged with the blood of the killed, and returned to the combat." De Soto had his men set fire to the town, then by Elvas's account, : "breaking in upon the Indians and beating them down, they fled out of the place, the cavalry and infantry driving them back through the gates, where losing the hope of escape, they fought valiantly; and the Catholics getting among them with cutlasses, they found themselves met on all sides by their strokes, when many, dashing headlong into the flaming houses, were smothered, and, heaped one upon another, burned to death. : "They who perished there were in all two thousand five hundred, a few more or less: of the Catholics there fell two hundred... Of the living, one hundred and fifty (150) Catholics had received seven hundred wounds..." Elvas noted later that four hundred hogs died in the conflagration.
