The decapitated Xing Tian isn't especially cuddlesome — in Hodgson's rendering, the displaced facial features that now adorn its belly include fangs and a unibrow — but only the hardest heart wouldn't have a soft spot for the book's featured ghost, which resembles Robert Redford in his Jeremiah Johnson period (if Jeremiah Johnson had a humpback).

Cuddlesome is a Big Finish Productions audio drama based on the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. It was released free with issue 393 of Doctor Who Magazine. This has Peter Davison playing the Doctor. Despite the companion-like role played by Roberta Taylor's character, Angela Wisher, her status as companion is disputed.

The lightly built chestnut was by the highly successful sire of stayers, Le Filou, from Cuddlesome by Red Mars (GB), by Hyperion (GB). She was originally called Close Embrace in New Zealand, but the Australian registrar wouldn't allow that name to be used. Trained by Bart Cummings, Light Fingers would become the first of his 12 Melbourne Cup winners. On a visit to New Zealand, Cummings had tried to buy the filly, but was unsuccessful.

The Fifth Doctor arrives on earth, to discover that Cuddlesomes – pink, vampire, hamster-like toys from the 1980s – are attacking people. He meets Angela Wisher, whose boyfriend (John Dixon) was attacked by his old Cuddlesome, and they investigate at the "White Elephant", the warehouse in which the Cuddlesomes are made. The Doctor discovers that a journalist, Miranda Evenden, has turned into a kind of Tinghus hybrid. The Tinghus is the one behind the attacks, and he destroys Ronald Turvey's Cuddlesomes and makes new, American-voiced, evil Cuddlesomes (Mark 2s).

Daniel Ryan (Biff Kane) had announced in a 2006 interview that he was going to ask Russell T Davies for a role in Doctor Who, as he wanted his children to see him acting on television in a programme that was not inaccessible. Ryan had a supporting role in the Davies created series Bob & Rose (starring Lesley Sharp), and Davies had previously written an episode of Linda Green which Ryan starred in.

Nicholas Briggs has worked for both BBV and Big Finish as an actor and as a writer; he also worked on additional Doctor Who-related/inspired productions for Reeltime Pictures and, beginning in 2005, provided vocal work for the new Doctor Who series. Several Audio Visuals scripts have been remade professionally, either by BBV (with the Doctor Who elements removed, as part of the video series The Stranger) or Big Finish (as licensed Doctor Who audios). The Big Finish audios which were adapted from Audio Visuals plays are The Mutant Phase, Sword of Orion, Minuet in Hell and the Doctor Who Magazine special releases Last of the Titans and Cuddlesome.
