Cristóbal Mauricio Silva Ibaceta (born October 12, 1979 in Santiago) is a Chilean amateur mountain biker. He has won five Chilean national championship titles in men's mountain biking, and also represented his nation Chile in two editions of the Olympic Games (2004 and 2008). Silva spotted officially on his major international debut at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where he scored a fortieth place in the men's cross-country race with only a single lap left to complete. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Silva qualified for his second Chilean squad in the men's cross-country race by receiving an automatic berth from the Chilean Cycling Federation () and the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), based on his best performance at the World and Pan American Championships and at the Mountain Biking World Series.
Korica began training formally with AK Moslavina. He would go on to have a brilliant distance-running career in Europe before making it to the 1972 Summer Olympics. Francelina Cabral (born March 23, 1985) is an East Timorese cross-country cyclist. She competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the women's cross-country race, the first Olympic cyclist of any type to compete for East Timor, but she was lapped and did not finish the race. She was the flag bearer for Timor- Leste at the Parade of Nations.

Vera Sergeyevna Andreyeva (also Vera Andreeva, ; born May 10, 1988 in Cheboksary) is a Russian amateur mountain biker. She represented her nation Russia, as a 20-year-old junior, at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and later finished second in the women's elite cross-country race at the 2012 Russian Mountain Biking Championships. Andreeva qualified for the Russian squad, along with her teammate and top medal contender Irina Kalentieva, in the women's cross-country race at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing by receiving one of the nation's two available berths based on her top-ten performance from the UCI Mountain Biking World Rankings. With two laps left to complete the race, Andreeva suffered a heat-related fatigue under Beijing's hot and humid weather, and instead decided to pull off from the course, finishing only in twenty-third place.

Woodford Halse fire station Woodford Halse Church of England Primary School serves the parish. The school has one of the largest playing fields of any Northamptonshire school and holds an annual cross-country race, attracting over 700 competitors from more than thirty schools. The village has several shops and businesses. Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service has a fire station at Woodford Halse, staffed by retained firefighters.

She is the first ever Namibian female to qualify for the Olympic Cross Country event and competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the women's cross country race. Michelle also qualified and competed in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. She competed in the Elite Road and Cross Country Olympic events.

He finished 19th in the individual cross-country race at the 1920 Summer Olympics and fourth among British runners, and therefore did not score for the silver medal-winning British team. He also competed at the International Cross Country Championships in 1911–13 and 1920–21 and won one individual silver and five team gold medals.
Włoszczowska won the silver medal in mountain biking at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Since 2009, she has lent her name to a cross-country race in her home town of Jelenia Góra, called "Jelenia Góra Trophy Maja Włoszczowska MTB Race". Riders such as Miguel Martinez, Catharine Pendrel or Mary McConneloug have taken part in it. Włoszczowska became the world champion in elite cross-country mountain biking in 2010.
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois by Mexican immigrants, Torres began running with his twin brother Eduardo at the age of eleven. He won the cross-country race at the 1998 Foot Locker National Championships in Orlando, Florida, and added three more titles in his category from numerous state high school tournaments. Jorge is one of only two boys ever to run in four Foot Locker Cross Country Championships.
The Mike Rose Soccer Complex is a complex of 16 soccer fields and one 2,500-capacity stadium located in Memphis, Tennessee. The complex and stadium were completed in 2001 at a cost of around $4 million. The complex is home to many clubs in the Memphis area as well as several regional tournaments. The largest cross country race at night known as the Memphis Twilight Invitational is held here as well.

As Continental Correspondent of the UK-based Motor Sport magazine, he covered Formula One and other races all over Europe. He gained fame as the navigator for Stirling Moss in their record-breaking triumph in the 1955 Mille Miglia cross-country race.
1929 National Air Races Portland Derby Trophy won by Ted Wells. Wells purchased a Travel Air D4000 in 1928 and used it for air racing, flying in the 1929 Portland Derby which was part of the National Air Races. This was a cross country race from Portland to Cleveland, which involved navigation skills, as well as maximizing aircraft speed. Wells won this race, receiving $10,000 in prize money.

Anne Terpstra Anne Terpstra (born 5 January 1991 in Zierikzee) is a Dutch cross-country cyclist. She placed 15th in the women's cross-country race at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She was on the start list of 2018 Cross-Country European Championships and was not allowed to finish. In 2019, during the Mercedes-Benz Mountain Bike Word Cup in Andorra, she won her first World Cup by besting Jolanda Neff in the final lap.
The boys also had a swimming team and an athletics team. The girls' school played netball and hockey in winter and tennis in summer. Both schools held an annual cross- country race. Entry was compulsory for all pupils, who also had to complete at least three after-school practice runs over the full course in the weeks preceding the race, with teachers placed on every corner to ensure nobody dropped out or took shortcuts.
Mihalić's entry into athletics was almost coincidental. In 1940, one of the events of the Workers' Sports Games in Zagreb was a cross country race. Mihalić was nominated for the race by his football club Grafičar as he was their fastest player. The Dovedale Dash is an annual cross- country race along the banks of the River Dove, along Dovedale, and between the villages of Ilam and Thorpe. First organised in 1953, the race takes place on the first Sunday of November, although previously it was held on the closest Sunday to Guy Fawkes Night. The race has been cancelled on four occasions, most recently in 1998, 2000 and 2004, as a result of bad weather.
For the Youth Olympics instead of competitors competing separately they compete as a team. In the boys' and girls' team event two athletes compete together. Each of the two riders must compete in two of the following events, with only one team member competing per event; BMX, Mountain Bike Cross-country Race, Mountain Bike Cross-country Eliminator and Road Time Trial. Both members will also have to compete in the Road Race event.

Soviet women swept the 10 kilometer race, which was the first medal sweep for the Soviets at the Winter Olympics. They were however upset by Sweden in the 3×5 kilometer relay. Nordic countries dominated the men's competition.
Gordon Bennett Bromley (14 June 1916 – 17 April 2006) was a long distance runner from New Zealand. Competing in the marathon he won five national titles and placed seventh at the 1950 British Empire Games. He also won the Wellington 20-mile cross-country race in 1949 and 1950, improving the course record by almost five minutes. Bromley was born at Scotts Ferry, but lived most of his life in or near Marton, New Zealand.
In 2013 she won the 8 km cross country race in 30:25 beating Nadia Rodriguez from Argentina by 25 seconds at the South American Cross Country Championships in Concordia. In 2016 she had to pause her training due to an injury. In 2017 she was living in Ceilândia and still competing but her running was self funded as she was looking for a sponsor. She and her coach José Alessandro were planning more events.

Lily Matthews (born 30 September 1989) is a Welsh racing cyclist from Builth Wells, Wales. Matthews is a former cross country runner who was forced to quit athletics due to injury. She turned to cycling and went on to represent Great Britain in the under-23 cross-country race at the 2010 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships and Wales in the Women's road race at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. She did not finish the race.
Bronisława Ludwichowska (born 18 September 1951) is a Polish former distance runner who won the 1977 Women's Cinque Mulini cross-country race. She followed up a sixth-place finish at the 1974 IAAF World Cross Country Championships with a two medal performance in the following year's championships; winning an individual silver medal and a team bronze medal. The Bill Dellinger Invitational is an annual cross country race held by the University of Oregon in honor of the coach. Evie Richards (born 11 March 1997) is a British cyclist who specialises in mountain bike and cyclo-cross racing. She became under-23 cyclo-cross world champion at the 2016 and 2018 World Championships. Richards comes from Malvern, she first rode for T-Mo Racing. She is a member of the British Cycling Olympic Senior Academy. She took the silver medal position in the junior cross-country race at the 2015 mountain bike World Championships, held in Vallnoord, Andorra in September 2015.
To stop him from getting into trouble as a rebel, his older brother Pete got Zamperini involved in the school track team where Pete was already a star. Pete took Louis on several training runs. At the end of his freshman year, he finished fifth in the All City C-division 660 yard (600 m) dash. After a summer of running in 1932, starting with his first cross-country race, and throughout the last three years of high school, Zamperini was undefeated.

Clifford "Cliff" Henderson (1895–1984) was the managing director of the National Air Races from 1928 through 1939. Described as "the Barnum of aviation," he obtained sponsors for two of the most well-known air races of the period, the Bendix transcontinental and the Thompson closed-course classics. The Thompson Trophy was first awarded in 1929. The 1929 National Air Races included the first official women-only event, the Women's Air Derby, a cross-country race from Los Angeles to Cleveland, Ohio.

In 2003, she claimed the gold medal at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, defeating USA's Mary McConneloug (silver) and Chile's Francisca Campos (bronze).
Yolande Speedy (born December 30, 1976 in Johannesburg) is a South African professional mountain biker. She has claimed two gold medals in the women's elite cross-country race at the African Mountain Bike Championships (2007 and 2013), and also represented her nation South Africa at the 2008 Summer Olympics. In 2007 Speedy competed in the Absa Cape Epic Mixed Category with team mate Paul Cordes, winning the category. She claimed 1st place again in 2013, this time in the Women's Category with team mate Catherine Williamson.

Heatley joined Coventry Godiva Harriers at the end of 1950 and was to become a life member of the club. He won the Midland Cross Country Youth title in 1951, and finished third in the English National Youth Cross Country Championship. He won another bronze medal in the National Juniors cross country race in 1952. During the 1953/54 season, he took part in cross country races at the Junior level in the Birmingham League, winning their first division race at least eight times.

The Deodoro Military Circle is a Brazilian Army sport facility in Rio de Janeiro, at the Military Village, on the western side of the city. It has hosted the Pan American Games, Rio 2007. Equestrian (Dressage, Eventing, and Show Jumping), Field Hockey, Modern Pentathlon (shooting, fencing, swimming, show jumping and a cross country race), Sport Shooting (rifle, trap, pistol and skeet) and Archery competitions. Permanent venues were built at the site, such as the National Equestrian Center and the National Shooting Center, besides the Archery and Field Hockey which held future competitions in these disciplines.

Cornes first became interested in running at Clifton, where he won the seven mile cross-country 'Long Pen Pole' race, as his father had done twice before him. When the Achilles Club from Oxford and Cambridge came for a match against Clifton, he beat, on handicap, Douglas Lowe, who was an Olympic champion. At Oxford, he won the Freshman cross-country race. He competed for Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 1932 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, in the 1500 metres where he won the Silver medal.

The classification systems differ from sport to sport. The systems are designed to open up Paralympic sports to as many athletes as possible, who can participate in fair competitions against athletes with similar levels of ability. The I-500 is an American snowmobile race associated with the USCC Racing Association (USCC) which starts at the Seven Clans Casino in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. The cross-country race is a 3-day event and is 500 miles long (170 miles a day). The race was first run in 1966 and was then run from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Saint Paul, Minnesota. The race is now started in Thief River Falls and is run through the Red Lake Indian Reservation and finishes again at the starting line.
Petra Henzi (born 14 October 1969 in Küttigen, Aargau) is a retired Swiss professional mountain biker. Throughout her sporting career, she has won numerous Swiss national championship titles, and more importantly, a total of four prestigious medals (one gold, one silver, and two bronze) in women's cross-country race at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. Henzi later represented her nation Switzerland, as a 38-year-old senior, at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and also rode professionally for more than five seasons on Fischer-BMC Team, before retiring from the sport in early 2010.
The University annually holds students contests in 21 kinds of sport (arm-wrestling, weight-lifting, power- lifting, basketball, volleyball, mini-football, Greek-Roman wrestling, judo, table tennis, skis, swimming, chess, orienteering, sport aerobics, cross- country race, karate, track and field athletics). The BSU students are often prize-winners in the Republican Students’ Olympiad and other contests. University holds more than 90 sport events annually. There is a specialised unit - the Department for Physical Training which is aimed at studying the relevant issues and designing strategy in health development of the young people.

Ritz scored a resounding victory over Webb and Hall in Orlando, Florida, running the 5k course in 14:35. Perhaps more impressive, the previous year he claimed an unexpected national title while setting the course record in 14:29. As a senior in high school he set the Michigan high school 5k record of 14:10 at state finals; second place was 15:05. His final cross country race in high school was at the IAAF junior world cross-country championships in Ostend Belgium where he won a bronze medal.
Alex Roy, on the other hand, claims that almost every year's route was different, and that the only rule was total time point-to- point. The 31:04 record was set with sufficient margin to break the record even with the same route as the longest ever cross-country race. The originator of the Cannonball Run, Brock Yates, does not acknowledge any records or sanction races due to his concern that "somebody was going to get killed". Roy expresses similar concern with regard to anyone attempting to break his claimed record.

The original cross country event, the World Championship Great Arcata To Ferndale Cross Country Kinetic Sculpture Race, now known as the Kinetic Grand Championship in Humboldt County, California, is also called the "Triathlon of the Art World" because art and engineering are combined with physical endurance during a three-day cross country race that includes sand, mud, pavement, a bay crossing, a river crossing and major hills.

Anastasia Ndereba competed in several KAAA tournaments earlier in her career. In 06 Nov 1999, she competed in the 8 kilometer cross-country race, in which she emerged 4th with a time of 34 minutes and 32 seconds. This race was organised in Nairobi, Kenya and put her on the forefront to be selected for other competitions. On 24 December the same year, she competed in a similar race titled 'KAAA Energiser Crosscountry' in Machakos, Kenya, improving her time by 7 minutes to 27 minutes and 32 seconds.

He joined the Ewen School of flying at Hendon Aerodrome in July and gained his Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificate, No. 575, on 5 August. On 8 October 1913 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant (on probation) in the Royal Flying Corps (Special Reserve). Just after obtaining his licence he won his first cross-country race and then won the Hendon March Meeting race, beating his old instructor into second place. In the latter part of 1913 and early 1914, Strange flew many hours from Hendon, instructing trainee pilots.

Short-track cross-country consists of many very short laps so as to be spectator-friendly. Unlike downhill races, which are conducted in a time trial format, cross-country races traditionally feature a mass start or interval start, where riders are released in several large groups divided by age and/or ability. Races with very large fields that do not wish to stagger starts will sometimes employ a Le Mans start where racers begin by running to their bikes. James Wilson (2 October 1891 – 1973) was a Scottish long-distance runner who specialised in the 10,000 metres. He competed for Great Britain at the 1920 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal in the 10,000 metres, five seconds behind Paavo Nurmi; Wilson beat Nurmi by some 5 seconds in the heats. He finished fourth in the individual 8,000 m cross-country race, again behind Nurmi, but won a silver medal with the British team. Nationally Wilson won Scottish titles over 4 miles in 1914–20 and over 10 miles in 1920.
Erin go Bragh won the County Dublin Novice Cross Country race in 1921 and also held an invitational five mile race starting at the court house in Blanchardstown. The club fielded a Junior and schools football team and for the first time since 1890 a hurling team. The club was absent from the field of play in both hurling and football in 1922 but did compete at cross country before sadly disbanding once again in late 1922 early 1923. 1943-1985 The club name is rarely seen afterwards in papers.
She became the first women's winner of a newly inaugurated 7 km race at the Memorial Peppe Greco, beating Ejegayehu Dibaba to the line. She won the 5000 m silver behind Cheruiyot at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In March 2011 she won at the Trofeo Alà dei Sardi cross country race She reached the podium on the 2011 Diamond League circuit once that season, taking third at the DN Galan over 5000 m. She gained selection to represent Kenya for a second consecutive time over the distance at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics.
Mongolia sent a delegation to compete at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, United States from 8–24 February 2002. This was Mongolia's tenth time participating in a Winter Olympic Games. The delegation consisted of four athletes, two cross-country skiers; Davaagiin Enkhee and Jargalyn Erdenetülkhüür, as well as two short-track speed skating competitors; Battulgyn Oktyabri and Ganbatyn Jargalanchuluun. Erdenetülkhüür placed 63rd in the men's 15 kilometre classical cross-country race; he was the only one of the four to compete in an event final.
This achievement highlighted his combined successes in cross-country, short track, and marathon-distance cycling events. Also in 2007, Bishop earned six podium results in the USA National Championship Series, including a victory at the NMBS cross-country Showdown at Sugar in Banner Elk, North Carolina. That year, he also won the silver medal in the USA National Championship cross-country race in Mount Snow, Vermont. In 2003, Bishop won the gold medal in the cross country mountain bike event at the XIV Pan American Games held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Schneitter sought sporting headlines on the international scene at the 2008 European Mountain Bike Championships in Sankt Wendel, Germany, where she held off a tight battle against Slovenia's Tanja Zakelj and Czech Republic's Tereza Huříková for the gold medal in the women's under-23 cross-country race, adding a silver to her early career resume from the World Junior Championships in Val di Sole, Italy. Few months later, Schneitter qualified for the Swiss squad, along with her teammate and 2007 world champion Petra Henzi, in the women's cross-country race at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing by receiving one of the nation's two available berths for her team from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), based on her best performance at the World Cup series and Mountain Biking World Rankings. At the start of the race, Schneitter landed on her head into the ground on the initial lap, but managed to successfully complete a 4.8-km sturdy, treacherous cross-country course with a career-high, fifteenth-place effort in 1:53:42. Shortly after the Olympics, Schneitter signed an exclusive sponsorship contract with Colnago-Cap-Arreghini Team for two additional seasons, followed by her short stint on Colnago-Arreghini-Sudtirol in 2010.
The company relocated to College Park, where Milling became the only aviator able to master the significantly different flight controls of each type. Only a few months after learning to fly, Milling entered and won the Tri-State Biplane Race against a field of experienced fliers. Flying a course that went from Boston, Massachusetts to Nashua, New Hampshire to Worcester, Massachusetts to Providence, Rhode Island and back to Boston, a total of 175 miles, the cross-country race was the longest of its era. Milling flew it in a Wright B Flyer without the use of a compass.
She took third for a second time at the Memorial van Damme in September, recording personal bests in the 1500 metres and 2000 metres and beaten only by reigning world champions Gelete Burka and Vivian Cheruiyot. She won a junior cross country race on home turf in Kericho in late 2009, but failed to reach the top three at the 2010 Kenyan Trials. Later, Barnes was active as an official and leader of Otago Athletics, and was particularly supportive of women's athletics. His name has become enshrined in the Otago harrier programme in the J.G. Barnes cross-country race, first held in the early 1950s in the Chisholm Park area of Dunedin. Barnes was the New Zealand athletics team manager at the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland, and assistant manager for the New Zealand team at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. He served as president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and was a life member of the Otago Amateur Athletic Association.
In athletics, Lundemo won ten national titles in Norway. He won the 10,000 metres title in 1961 and 1962, the marathon title in 1964, the 25 kilometres road race in 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964, the 8 kilometres cross-country race in 1960, the cross-country single start race in 1961 and 1962. In the 10,000 metres, the 8 kilometres cross-country and the cross-country single start he also won silver and bronze medals, the last time in 1968. He competed once in an international event, when he finished nineteenth in the 10,000 metres event at the 1962 European Championships.
The conditions for the cross-country race were extremely hot and demanding, and the majority of runners failed to finish; this included Rastas, who dropped out shortly after the halfway point. Two other Finns (Väinö Sipilä and Eero Berg) also dropped out, but Finland still won the team race again. Rastas made a third and final Olympic appearance in 1928, this time in the marathon; he placed fourteenth. In total, Rastas won 10 medals at the Finnish championships, including three gold medals; in addition to his 10,000 m gold from 1917, he won both the 5000 m and 10,000 m in 1922.

Antipas Kwari Antipass Kwari (born 1975) is a Zimbabwean cyclist. He was the 2005 Zimbabwe mountainbike champion and represented his country at the 2007 African Mountainbike Championships which were held in Windhoek, Namibia where he placed 8th, in doing so Kwari qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games held in Beijing, where he finished 48th in the men's cross country race."Zimbabwe preparations for Olympic Games gather momentum", Xinhuanet.com, May 21, 2008 In 2007, Kwari and the Zimbabwe Mountain Bike team created history when they became the very first Zimbabwe Mountain Bike team to race in an official UCI international race.
After completing a full three seasons of collegiate running, Hoppel secured a 4th-place finish in the 800 meter final on October 1, 2019, one year and one month after his season-opening cross-country race at the Bob Timmons Invitational on September 1, 2018. Remarkably, he was able to set another personal best, finishing a long season in style with a 1:44.25 performance. On February 15, 2020, Hoppel earned his first national title at the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships, held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, running a time of 1:46.67 to win the 800m final.

Matriculating to the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1981 he shocked much better known athletes like Alberto Salazar, Steve Scott, Henry Rono and countrymate Nick Rose by winning the TAC National Cross Country Championships. His time for the 10,000 metre course was over 2 seconds faster than the listed World Record for the distance on the track (set by Rono). A few weeks later he ran the Lasse Viren Finnish Invitational, an elite 20 km cross country race on hills and dirt trails. His time of 58:38 also surpassed the standing World Record for the distance on a flat course.
The first National Peasants' Games, held in Beijing in 1988, comprised seven events, all of them conventional sports: basketball, table tennis, Chinese-style wrestling (possibly shuai jiao), athletics, cycling, shooting and football. At the second Games, in Xiaogan in Hubei province, the alignment with 'peasant activity' began. Traditional pastimes of xiangqi (Chinese chess) and t'ai chi were added, while football was omitted and shooting was replaced by the 'militiaman triathlon' (shooting, grenade throwing and a five-kilometre cross-country race). The 1996 Games, in Shanghai, introduced dragon dancing as an event, and attracted foreign media coverage.
On 1 May 1919 Weare was again appointed a temporary captain, and on 1 August was granted a permanent commission in the Royal Air Force as a lieutenant, becoming a flying officer when the RAF adopted its own system of ranks soon after. In July 1920, during the annual RAF Pageant, Weare took part in a cross-country race between six Avro 504 aircraft, taking an early lead, and eventually winning. On 1 January 1922 he was promoted to flight lieutenant. On 6 August 1923 Weare was one of the sixteen competitors in the "Air League Challenge Cup", representing RAF Cranwell.

In 1980, along with co-driver and race organizer Rick Doherty, Wright participated in the U.S. Express, a cross- country race that was the successor to The Cannonball Run. Wright and Doherty drove a specially outfitted Mazda RX-7 from Brooklyn, New York to Santa Monica, California in 33:39, winning the illegal race. The first World Association of Veteran Athletes Championships were held in Toronto, Canada, from 11–16 August 1975. This was the first such championships for the newly created division of the sport of athletics for people over (at that point in time) 40 years of age, now referred to as Masters athletics. With over 1,400 individual participants and 5,000 starts, this claimed to be the largest track and field meet ever held in North American to that point in time. A full range of track and field events were held, along with a cross country race and a marathon.
Lada Vladimirovna Jienbalanova (; born April 10, 1970) is a female modern pentathlete from Kazakhstan. She competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, where she finished fourteenth in the women's event with a score of 5,076 points. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Jienbalanova fell off her horse during the riding segment, and decided not to run in the 3 km-cross country race, finishing only in last place. In 2002, Jienbalanova achieved her best results in the modern pentathlon by winning gold medals at the Asian Championships in Tokyo, Japan, and at the Asian Games in Busan, South Korea.
Bror Karl Fock (29 March 1888 – 4 September 1964) was a Swedish long-distance runner who competed at the 1912 Summer Olympics held in Stockholm in the 3000 m, 10000 m and cross-country events. He finished seventh in the 3000 m, earning a silver medal with the Swedish team, and 17th in the cross country race. Although Sweden won the cross-country team event, Fock did not receive a medal because only three best runners from each team were counted, while he was seventh. In 1912, Fock briefly held the world record over 3000 m.
In the original 1975 film, Frankenstein is portrayed as the reigning champion of the Transcontinental Road Race, an annual gladiator-style cross- country race. A symbol of the ruling totalitarian government, he is a feared racer who is purported to be half-man, half-machine. In reality, it turns out that there have been several Frankensteins over the years – each one recruited by the government to replace their injured or killed predecessors. In this way, with each man donning the same alias and disguise, Frankenstein seems to be an unkillable opponent who survives any crash or injury.
This was reversed as the difference in the cross- country race tended to be too big to overcome in ski jumping. The sport has been dominated by the Norwegians, supported by the Finns. It was not until 1960 that the Nordic grip on this discipline was broken when West German Georg Thoma won the gold medal at the 1960 Winter Olympics. It was decided in early- November 2016 that women's competitions were to be established on FIS-level starting during the second half of the 2010s with inclusion at world championships starting in 2021 and at the Olympic Winter Games in 2022.
The Red Hose 5 Mile Race is a cross country race that is held annually in Carnwath, South Lanarkshire in Scotland. Held annually since 1508, the Red Hose is considered the oldest foot race in the world. The race has been held every year except during the 1926 United Kingdom general strike, the Foot and Mouth disease outbreaks in 1952 2001 and World War I and World War II. The requirement to hold the Red Hose is stipulated in a royal charter. If the local laird wishes to cancel it, he must get the permission of the Lord Chamberlain.
Yader Zoli (born 1 October 1975 in Faenza) is an Italian professional mountain biker. He has claimed three Italian national championship titles in men's mountain biking, and later represented his nation Italy in two editions of the Olympic Games (2004 and 2008). Zoli currently trains and races for the 2013 season on the Torpado Surfing Shop pro cycling team, along with Belgian rider and four-time Olympian Roel Paulissen. Zoli made his official debut at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where he scored a thirty-fifth place in the men's cross-country race with a time of 2:31:39, finishing farther off the podium by seventeen minutes.
Dellys Starr (née Franke) (born 2 October 1976 in Melbourne) is a retired Australian amateur mountain biker. She has won two Australian national championship titles in the women's cross-country race (2006 and 2008), and later represented her nation Australia, as a 31-year-old veteran, at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in her home turf and at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Starr currently resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she shares with her husband and American cyclist Ryan Starr. Competing for the Australian cycling team since 1997, Starr soared higher on the international mountain biking scene, as she took home her first ever Australian national championship title in 2006.
As described in a film magazine, Jimmy Dent (Reid), son of John Dent (Roberts) the maker of the reliable but plain Dent automobiles, is dismissed from the firm after he refuses to drive a Dent. He goes west with the Tyler family, owners of a rival automobile firm, in one of their expensive high speed cars. The elder Dent attempts to break the cross-country record held by a Tyler automobile with a Dent vehicle, but Tyler's men waylay his drivers. Jimmy offers a cash prize for a free-for-all cross-country race, and drives the Dent when his father's driver betrays him.
Lindgren qualified for the Swedish squad, along with his teammate and two-time Olympian Fredrik Kessiakoff, in the men's cross-country race at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing by receiving one of the nation's two available berths from the Swedish Cycling Federation () and the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), based on his best performance at the World Cup series, World and European Championships, and Mountain Biking World Series. Lindgren could not upgrade a much stellar ride to complete a 4.8-km sturdy, treacherous cross-country course, as he decided to end his course with only two laps left and a thirty-eighth-place finish because of bike problems.

Lidingöloppet is an annual cross country running competition held in Lidingö, Sweden. The 30 km run has about 15,000 participants per year and the shorter races several thousands, making it the largest cross-country event in the world.IAAF "Lidingöloppet – the longest and the largest cross country race in the world", International Association of Athletics Federations, accessed August 26th 2011 It is held the last weekend of September each year. The initiative to arrange Lidingöloppet came from Karl Axel Karlberg and Sven Gärderud but the original idea to have a large competition for the average jogger comparable with Vasaloppet for cross country skiers, came from the sports magazine journalist Sven Lindhagen.
Cragg declared for Ireland in 2003, having represented South Africa as a junior athlete in a cross country race. He currently runs for Clonliffe Harriers, a club in Dublin. Cragg made his début for Ireland at the 2003 European Cross Country Championships, where he finished a respectable 8th.
The following year, he also placed first in a cross country race from Milwaukee to St. Louis and in the St. Louis Fighter Pilot Air Tournament. He also won first place in The Great Race from London, England, to Victoria, British Columbia flying a Learjet. In 1970, Clay created worldwide attention when he and Allen Paulson flew a four-engine Douglas DC-7 nicknamed Super Snoopy in the California 1000 Mile Air Race at Mojave, California. They finished in sixth place out of twenty at an average speed of 325 miles per hour, marking the first and only time a four-engine airliner ever competed in a pylon event.
The flotation equipment keeps the legs at surface meaning a good crawl position can be maintained without kick. Because of safety measures a swimrun competition is usually carried out by teams but there are several races where you can race individually. There are three classes to compete in; either a men's class, women's class or a mixed gender class. Given that swimrun is a cross-country race, there are no standards yet in terms of how far the total run and swim should be, or how many transitions there should be in a swimrun competition, like there is in sports related to swimrun such as aquathlon, biathle or triathlon.

In 2008 Goolab joined Belgrave Harriers and was part of the 12-man squad to win bronze at the English national 12-stage road relay championships. In 2009 became the English National junior cross country champion, the junior intercounties cross country champion, and was part of the Belgrave team to win gold at the National 12-stage road relays. He also won the junior race at the International cross competition in Lisbon, Portugal.

The start of a typical cross country race, as an official fires a gun to signal the start All runners start at the same time, from a starting arc (or line) marked with lines or boxes for each team or individual. An official, 50 meters or more in front of the starting line, fires a pistol to indicate the start. If runners collide and fall within the first 100 meters, officials can call the runners back and restart the race, however this is done only once. Crossing the line or starting before the starting pistol is fired is considered a false start and most often results in disqualification of the runner.
Dario Alejandro Gasco (born January 20, 1987 in Concepción, Tucumán) is an Argentine professional mountain biker. He won a bronze medal in men's cross- country racing at the 2007 Pan American Games, and later represented his nation Argentina at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Throughout his sporting career, Gasco has been training and riding for four consecutive seasons on Zenith MTB International, and Spain's Massi Cycling Team. Gasco spotted officially on his major international debut at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he delivered a bronze-medal time of 2:07:37 in the men's cross- country race, trailing behind U.S. rider Adam Craig and Brazil's Rubens Donizete within a two-minute gap.
Slepov was involved in business in 2001 when he began one of the biggest Russian dealers of Polar pulsemeters. In 2010 after participating in World Rogaine Championship (rogaine is 24-hour team cross-country race) in New Zealand, Ilya found out that several sports shops offer technologies to choose sports shoes based on foot movement video analysis. That made Slepov think of creating similar shops chain in Russia, so in September 2011 at Russian Rogaine Championship Slepov told his friend Evgeniy Gavrilov about this idea and offered him to work together (as a manager or partner). Slepov and Gavrilov contacted with Siliconcoach software developers team from New Zealand and began new enterprise founding.
Nurmi at the 1924 Summer Olympics Nurmi made his international debut in August at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. He took his first medal by finishing second to Frenchman Joseph Guillemot in the 5000 m. This would remain the only time that Nurmi lost to a non-Finnish runner in the Olympics. He went on to win gold medals in his other three events: the 10,000 m, sprinting past Guillemot on the final curve and improving his personal best by over a minute, the cross country race, beating Sweden's Eric Backman, and the cross country team event where he helped Heikki Liimatainen and Teodor Koskenniemi defeat the British and Swedish teams.
He was joined in the men's marathon by fellow British athletes, Tsegai Tewelde and his brother Derek Hawkins. Hawkins finished ninth in the marathon at the 2016 Olympics in a time of 2:11:52. In October 2016 he again ran the Great Scottish Run and this time was the overall winner of the event in 1:00:24. This would have been a new Scottish half-marathon record, but the race was found to be 150 m too short, which invalidated the result. In January 2017 he became the first British athlete to beat Mo Farah in any race for 7 years at the Great Edinburgh International Cross Country race, which has been held annually since 2005.

The next year, the course was extended to include Scald Law. In 1979, a ladies’ race took place over Carnethy only, the women having in previous years been restricted to a cross- country route round Penicuik Public Park. In 1980, the hill race was cancelled due to thick mist which led the police to feel that allowing the runners to cross the A702 road was unsafe. The organisers put on a two-lap cross-country race instead. However, only twenty-six men and women ran the cross-country course, with 103 others disregarding the cancellation decision and running the hill race. After this, the 1981 race was run over a new course which did not require the road crossing.
For his performance at the 2006 Games McKeever was named Best Male at the Paralympic Sport Awards. At the 2010 Winter Olympics, he was going to compete in the men's 50km cross-country race, however Canada's coach decided to replace him with a skier who did well at an earlier event at the 2010 games and thus he did not become the first athlete in the world to compete in the Winter Paralympics and Winter Olympics in the same year.
There are various extra curricular activities in work experience and art education subjects which are available and taken up by the students including Yoga, Creative Reading, Embroidery, Karate, Scouts & Guides, Electrical Gadgets, Instrumental Music, Indian Music, Western Music, Indian Dance, Home Science, Social Work, Interior Decoration, Street Play, Pottery, Drawing, Public Speaking and Journalism among others. The Fr. Peter Mermier Football Tournament is hosted by the school and has participation from schools across Delhi. It is an important tournament in the school calendar with many prominent school teams from outside participating and the SFS football team competing in it. The school also organizes a Cross-Country race across West Delhi, for its students, to run for a cause and spread social awareness.
Eric Natanael Backman (18 May 1896 – 29 June 1965) was a Swedish long distance runner who had his best achievements at the 1920 Summer Olympics. He won the silver medal in the 8,000 m cross-country race, 2.6 seconds behind the legendary Paavo Nurmi. This second place helped the Swedish cross-country team to win the bronze medal behind Finland and Great Britain, as two other team members finished 10th and 11th. This scenario repeated in the 3,000 m event – Backman finished second and other Swedes 10th and 12th; this time Backman did not receive an individual medal, but he again pulled up the Swedish team to the third place. In the 5,000 metres Backman finished third, again behind Paavo Nurmi.
Throughout her sporting career, Speedy has been training as an amateur rider for the IMC Racing Activeworx Mountain Biking Team, until she turned professional in 2010 and thereby raced for more than three seasons on . Speedy qualified for the South African squad, as a lone female rider, in the women's cross-country race at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing by finishing first and receiving an automatic berth from the UCI African Championships and by recording dominant triumphs in the final stage of the Mazda MTN National Cross-Country Series in Nelspruit. With only two laps left to complete the race, Speedy suffered from a heat-related fatigue, and instead decided to pull off directly from the course, finishing only in twenty-second place.
The women's cross-country mountain biking at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place at the Laoshan Mountain Bike Course on August 23, 2008. Germany's Sabine Spitz opened up a commanding, one-minute lead from the rest of the field and then stayed out in front to a spectacular finish with a gold-medal time in 1:45:11. Trailing behind the leader by more than forty seconds, Poland's Maja Włoszczowska took home the silver in 1:45:52, while Russian rider Irina Kalentieva held off a tight battle with Canada's Catharine Pendrel down the final lap to grab the bronze in 1:46:28. Among the 30 mountain bikers who competed in the cross-country race, only eighteen of them managed to complete the full distance.
While competing for his third Belgian squad at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Paulissen scored a career-high, fourth place in the men's cross-country race with a time of 2:18:10, finishing just off the podium by more than a minute. In that same year, Paulissen managed to earn another triumph on the second stage of the UCI World Cup series in Houffalize, and eventually edged out his teammate Meirhaeghe to take home the overall silver medal in the final round of the circuit. In 2005, Paulissen took a year off from mountain biking after he was suddenly stricken with rib injuries, fever, and acute bronchitis that prompted his decision to skip from the World Cup series and the Belgian Championships.
Klaus Nielsen (born 8 January 1980 in Køge) is a Danish professional mountain biker. He has won four Danish national championship titles in both men's cross-country and marathon races, and also represented his nation Denmark, as a 28-year-old senior, at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Nielsen currently trains and races professionally for Germany's Team ALB-Gold Mountain Bike Team. Nielsen qualified for the Danish squad, along with his teammate Jakob Fuglsang, in the men's cross-country race at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing by receiving one of the nation's two available berths for his team from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), based on his top-ten performance at the World Cup series and Mountain Biking World Series.
Brigadier General James Stewart, circa 1968 In addition to his film career, Stewart had diversified investments including real estate, oil wells, the charter-plane company Southwest Airways and membership on major corporate boards, and he became a multimillionaire.; Already prior to his enlistment in the Air Corps, he had been an avid amateur pilot, with a private pilot certificate and a commercial pilot license as well as over 400 hours of flying time. A highly proficient pilot, he entered a cross-country race with Leland Hayward in 1937, and was one of the early investors in Thunderbird Field, a pilot-training school built and operated by Southwest Airways in Glendale, Arizona. Stewart was also active in philanthropy over the years.
He was the National Cross-Country Champion in 1984 and 1992 and he won the Belfast International Cross Country race in 1991, and he is the current English Cross-Country team manager. Martin had disappointing races at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics, finishing thirteenth in the 1984 Olympic 5000-metre final and dropping out of the 1988 Olympic 10,000-metre final (see, for example, The Big Olympic Book / Suuri Olympiateos, volumes 4 and 6, published in Finland in 1984 and 1988, respectively). He represented England and won a gold medal in the 10,000 metres event in a time of 28:08.56, at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand. Four years later he represented England, at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Roel Paulissen (born 27 April 1976 in Hasselt) is a Belgian professional mountain biker. Throughout his sporting career since 1993, he has won more than ten Belgian national championship titles, mounted top-five finishes at both the European and World Cup series, and claimed a total of four medals, including two golds, in men's cross-country race at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. Paulissen also represented his nation Belgium in four editions of the Olympic Games (1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008), where he competed in men's mountain biking since it officially became an Olympic sport in 1996. By the start of the 2010 season, Paulissen had been overshadowed by a doping issue after he tested positive for clomiphene that sidelined and effectively ended his mountain biking career.
Hurikova qualified for the Czech squad, as a lone female rider, in the women's cross-country race at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing by receiving an automatic berth both from UCI and Czech Cycling Union, based on her best performance at the World Cup series and Mountain Biking World Rankings. Since the start of a 4.8-km cross-country course, Hurikova immediately became the major casualty on the initial lap, as she had been collided with another cyclist and then suffered from a mild rib fracture by falling off into the treacherous, rocky course path. Because of a heavy fall at the very start, Hurikova officially failed to complete the full distance of the course. Shortly after the Olympics, Hurikova left on her second stint for her nation's Česká Spořitelna MTB Team.

On 18 August, at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Kiprop won the 1500 metres in 3:36.28.
In that same year, she defeated Italian rider Eva Lechner for the gold medal in the women's cross-country race at the fourth stage of the Nissan UCI MTB World Cup in Champéry, and later continued to flourish her mountain biking success by taking home the silver for her Swiss squad in the mixed team relay at the 2011 UCI World Championships. Schneitter sought to compete for her second Swiss squad at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but suffered heavily with a shoulder injury from the bike crash that sidelined her Olympic bid at the final stage of the UCI World Cup in La Bresse, France. She also affiliated with her former rival Lechner to lead Italy's Colnago-Fabre-Südtirol for three more seasons, as her exclusive contract with the team was officially renewed until 2014.
Paulissen started his 2008 season by defending the men's cross-country race title at the Belgian Championships and by taking part in the Roc d'Azur MTB Marathon tournament, where he registered two more triumphs in the process. In July, Paulissen grabbed his first major success in men's marathon race at the UCI World Championships in Villabassa under a more controversial decision. With only 70 meters left to go, Paulissen held off a sprint duel match against Switzerland's Christoph Sauser for a spectacular finish, until they suddenly made contact with their handlebars and arms near the barrier and then both crashed. Being the first man up after hitting the tarmac hard, Paulissen reluctantly carried his broken bike towards the finish, while his rival Sauser remounted his lead to cross the line first, but ended his campaign with a protest.
After the race, the UCI officials decided that Sauser was relegated to second place for riding "dangerously" in the sprint and instead Paulissen was declared the World champion with a time of 4:46:56. Following his controversial triumph, Paulissen admitted, "I am very happy with this success. Unfortunately, this great race in the area where I live ended this way, but I think the jury was right." Twelve years after his official Olympic debut, Paulissen qualified for his fourth Belgian squad, as a 32-year- old and a cycling team captain, in the men's cross-country race at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing by receiving one of the nation's three available berths for his team from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), based on his top-ten performance at the World Cup series, World Championships, and Mountain Biking World Series.
Galinski made his official international debut for Poland at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where he finished twenty-ninth in the inaugural men's cross- country race with a time of 2:45:54. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Galinski further excelled his cross-country ride from Atlanta with a twenty- first-place effort in the same program, posting an official time of 2:17:35. In 2001, Galinski turned himself into an elite professional rider by signing an exclusive sponsorship contract with the Lotto-PZU cycling team, followed by short stints on the and MTB teams. Later the mountain biker's career flourished with his early career highlight the earning of a silver medal at the UCI World Cup series in Sankt Wendel, Germany, trailing behind leader and Swiss rider Christoph Sauser by eleven seconds.
The team was sponsored by Power Pacer, a human power measurement device that consisted of a rear-wheel hub, a frame mounted sensor and a handlebar mounted processor. McDonald struck a sponsorship deal with Balboa Instruments, maker of the device, whereby the team would test the product during the company's product research and development. As a condition of the sponsorship agreement, McDonald agreed to have the team use the equipment during the actual cross-country race which limited the team to spoked wheels rather than the faster and more efficient Time trial bicycle setup with Disk Wheels as used by the other teams. This hurt Team Strawberry in the competition by reducing their average speed, but the sacrifice contributed to the advancement of the technology. Balboa Instruments released the Power Pacer hub shortly after Look’s Max One.
The Navy also sponsors other athletic endeavors including a basketball league and an annual cross country race. Schuylkill Navy Run The Schuylkill Navy Run, also known as the Turkey Trot, began in 1899. Held on Thanksgiving Day, the race has been a tradition for rowers in the Philadelphia region ever since, with the exception of two years during World War I and two years during World War II. It begins at Malta Boat Club on Kelly Drive, and continues over 5 5/8 miles of hilly terrain. The runners go inbound on Kelly Drive to the traffic light in front of Lloyd Hall, turn left and go up Lemon Hill and over the Girard Avenue Bridge, then right onto Lansdowne Avenue. Just past Sweetbriar Cutoff, the course turns right and starts the true “cross country” segment across grassy surfaces.
Before the release of his solo album Smoke N Mirrors in 2009, B-Real reported that Cypress Hill has been working on an album for roughly a year. Currently in the mixing phase, Muggs has produced half of the album's material so far, going to DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Mike Shinoda for the rest. In 2009, Muggs entered the Gumball 3000 cross-country race, and on June 23, 2009, Soul Assassins: Intermission was released, featuring RZA, Prodigy, Evidence, The Alchemist and Bun B. The first single for the album was "Gangsta Shit," by Bun B and M1 of Dead Prez. Despite its high-profile guest list, the release was met with lukewarm reception, and Muggs later clarified its status as a preview before the release of Soul Assassins III, the next full-fledged installment of his Soul Assassins series.

Speed begins to suspect that Racer X is in fact Rex, noting that the masked racer appeared exactly two years after his brother died in "The Crucible" and exhibits the same driving styles.
The Kangaroo Hoppet, an annual 42km Cross Country Ski Race, at Falls Creek, Victoria Lake Mountain cross country ski resort, Victoria Telemark skier at Mount Stirling cross country ski resort Dedicated Cross Country ski resorts are located at Lake Mountain, Mount Stirling and Mount St Gwinear in Victoria and popular areas for back country skiing and ski touring in the Alpine National Park, Yarra Ranges National Park and the Baw Baw National Park include: Mount Bogong, Mount Feathertop, Bogong High Plains, Mount Howitt, Mount Reynard and Snowy Plains. The Kangaroo Hoppet is a leg of the Worldloppet cross-country race series which is conducted on the last Saturday of August each year, hosted by Falls Creek in Victoria. The showpiece 42-kilometre race attracts thousands of spectators and competitors. The Australian High Country is populated by unique flora and fauna including wombats, wallabies, echidnas, and the Snow Gum.
She was born in Dekishahay, Eritrea. As a junior, she competed in the junior races at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, finishing twelfth in 2006 and sixth in 2007. Together with her teammates she won the silver medal in the team event at the 2007 championships. She finished fifth in the 1500 metres at the 2006 World Junior Championships. At the 2007 All-Africa Games she finished seventh in the 5000 metres. She competed in her first senior cross-country race at the 2008 World Cross Country Championships, but only finished 43rd. Her personal best times are 4:05.11 minutes in the 1500 metres, achieved in July 2013 in Heusden- Zolder; and 14:59.49 minutes in the 5000 metres, achieved in July 2014 in Palo Alto, USA. The 5000 personal best also marked a Swedish record (former was from 1995 held by Sara Wedlund).
Wolfram Kurschat (born 17 May 1975 in Werne, North Rhine-Westphalia) is a German professional mountain biker. He has claimed two German national championship titles each in men's cross-country and marathon races (2007 and 2013), and later represented his nation Germany at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Kurschat currently trains and races for the 2013 season on Topeak-Ergon Racing Team, since he turned himself professional on the international scene in 2008. Kurschat qualified for the German squad, along with his teammates Manuel Fumic and Moritz Milatz, in the men's cross-country race at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, by finishing third from the German Championships and by receiving one of the nation's three available berths from the German Cycling Federation () and the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), based on his best performance at the World Cup series, World and European Championships, and Mountain Biking World Series.
Cédric Ravanel (born 26 November 1978 in Sallanches, Haute-Savoie) is a French professional mountain biker. He won two silver medals in men's cross-country racing at the 2004 UCI World Championships in Les Gets, and at the second stage of the 2007 UCI World Cup series in Offenburg, Germany. Ravanel also represented his nation France at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and has been training and racing professionally for numerous seasons on Team Lapierre International and GT Skoda Chamonix. Ravanel qualified for the French squad, along with his teammates Jean-Christophe Péraud and defending Olympic champion Julien Absalon in the men's cross-country race at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, by receiving one of the nation's three available berths from the French Cycling Association () and the Union Cycliste Internationale based on his best performance at the World Championships, World Cup series, and Mountain Biking World Rankings.
Christoph Reinhold Soukup (born October 11, 1980 in Vienna) is an Austrian professional mountain biker. Riding the sport for more than 15 years, Soukup has won fourteen Austrian national championship titles in men's mountain biking (both cross-country and marathon races), and later represented his nation Austria in two editions of the Olympic Games (2004 and 2008), where he installed top-fifteen finishes in the same tournament. Throughout his sporting career, Soukup has been training and racing professionally for more than a decade on the Hitec Sports Team, although he had appeared short stints under a sponsorship contract on Fuji and Mérida Biking Team. Soukup first competed for Austria at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where he finished fifteenth in the men's cross-country race with a time of 2:22:50, trailing behind Polish rider and four-time Olympian Marek Galiński on a tight sprint duel by 36 seconds.
At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Soukup qualified for his second Austrian squad in the men's cross-country race by receiving an automatic berth from the Austrian Cycling Federation () and the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), based on his top-five performance at the World Cup series, World and European Championships, and Mountain Biking World Series. Despite having suffered a sore throat and slight fever shortly before the race, Soukup recorded his highest career position on a 4.8-km sturdy, treacherous cross-country course with a much stronger, sixth-place time in 2:00:11, but narrowly missed the Olympic podium by two minutes. Soukup also sought a bid for his third Austrian squad at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but decided to pull himself off shortly from the final stage of the UCI World Cup in La Bresse, France due to a sustained scaphoid injury.
Serna attended Loara High School of Orange County, California, and competed in cross country and track in a time when California was the national hub of the high school distance running scene. Serna's reputation for leading races and the disproportionate amount of talented distance runners among Californian highschoolers accumulated to storied rivalries between Serna, Eric Hulst, Thom Hunt, and others. In the 1974 National Postal 2-mile cross country race, Serna placed first with a time of 8:56 in a loaded field (the National Postal was the only national-class high school cross country meet at the time), ahead of fellow Californian Eric Hulst. Ritzenhein began his professional career on December 31, 2004 when he finished 3rd in a 10 km road race in Italy. In January 2005 he won the prestigious Belfast International cross country race, and seemed to be in great form. Ritzenhein won the U.S. Cross Country Championships in the 12 km for his first senior national title. Before the World Cross Country Championships expectations were high and some prognosticators even predicted a top 10 finish, but Ritzenhein faded after going out with the leaders and ended up placing 62nd. Ritzenhein's 2005 track season began with a 13:22.23 5000m personal record and a 7:43.95 3000m. In a much anticipated 2 mile race that included high school rival Alan Webb, Ritzenhein ran 8:23.45, which was a solid performance, but was overshadowed by Webb's 8:11.48 for the American record (the next year, they would switch times).
A runner from youth, in 1918 Montague won the mile and the steeplechase at the London AC Schools meeting. Beginning in 1919, he attended Oxford University at Magdalen College, where he studied journalism. He was captain of Oxford's Varsity Cross Country Club,Molden, Simon. Oxford University Cross Country Club: Varsity History. and won the cross-country race against Cambridge (1919–20), and the 3 miles (1920–21). In 1920, Montague was a founding member of the Achilles Club, the joint Oxford–Cambridge track and field organisation. At the age of 20, he finished fourth in the mile and second in the 4 miles at the 1920 AAA Championships. He was invited to run in the 1920 Olympic 5K, but was unable to accept. From 1921 on, he concentrated on the steeplechase, and finished second in that race at the AAA Championships (1921, 1924–25).
Henzi qualified for the Swiss squad, along with her teammate and European junior champion Nathalie Schneitter, in the women's cross-country race at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing by receiving one of the nation's two available berths for her team from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), based on her best performance at the World Cup series and Mountain Biking World Rankings. She successfully completed a 4.8-km sturdy, treacherous cross-country course with a career-high, sixth-place effort in 1:48:41, narrowly missing out the Olympic podium by more than two seconds. Shortly after the Olympics, Henzi established herself again as the top female cyclist by surpassing her teammate Esther Süss for another gold medal at the second and final stage of the Nissan UCI MTB World Cup in Ornans, France. Because of her continuous triumphs and a more profound dedication to the sport, Henzi was officially nominated to be the Swiss Sportswoman of the Year, but did not reach the final shortlist.
McEwen also won six Big Ten Conference individual championships in track. His Big Ten championships include consecutive championships in the two- mile run (1950 with a time of 9:13 and 1951 with a time of 9:23.8) and a championship in the one-mile run (1951 with a time of 4:09.0). Although the University of Michigan did not have a varsity cross country team at the time, McEwen also competed in cross country while attending the school. He won consecutive Big Ten Conference cross country championships. Competing in the four-mile cross country race, McEwen won the 1949 championship with a time of 19 minutes, 44.5 seconds and repeated as champion in 1950 with a time of 19 minutes, 34.3 seconds. McEwen, was “thought to have legitimate medal prospects in the 5000 meters” at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, but he was unable to compete in the games because of an injury.
Topping the list of athletes on the Norwegian roster were mountain biker and Athens 2004 champion Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå, who qualified for her fifth Olympic cross-country race as the oldest and most experienced female competitor (aged 43), and rowing legend Olaf Tufte, who sought to add to his medal tally with a fourth medal at his sixth straight Olympics. Apart from Flesjå and Tufte, several Norwegian athletes also returned to compete in Rio de Janeiro, including handball team captain Kari Aalvik Grimsbø, middle-distance runner Henrik Ingebrigtsen in the men's 1500 m, Gambian-born sprinter Jaysuma Saidy Ndure, and small-bore rifle shooter and London 2012 finalist Ole-Kristian Bryhn, who was nominated by the committee to lead the delegation as the flag bearer in the opening ceremony. Norway left Rio de Janeiro with four bronze medals, signifying the country's poorest Olympic performance since 1964, and the first time without any gold medals since 1984.
The Colour trooped is the Sovereign's Banner and the current banner is the third generation of itself, presented by HM the Queen in March 1999; the first Sovereign's Banner, known as the "King George V's Banner", was presented by George V in 1918 and the second one was presented by Her Majesty in October 1978. The honour of Trooping the Colour falls to the Sovereign's Platoon, the then-Champion Company/Platoon. The Sovereign's Platoon, which wears multi-coloured lanyards, using the colours of all three Divisions, is selected on merit and is the best platoon amongst the Division; these officer cadets are chosen from a competition in drill, orienteering, shooting and a cross-country race, ensuring they are of the best in endurance and teamwork.
