Instead, these were all taken from sites that don't require special software to access—a common misconception is that most criminal activity happens somewhere on the dark web, when in reality, you may just need to know the correct domain for a crime site, which is often easily a Google search away.

The story in Darkest Night unfolds as a Found footage (pseudo-documentary) "documentary" by a Filipino television journalist, Danny Valencia (Jonas Gruet). In what are purportedly his words, Danny writes that he created the film from videotape found at the site of a 2003 unsolved crime. The opening scene shows him and some workmen at the crime site, ruins of a mansion where a family disappeared. Then, the video begins.

Each crime site was accessible by train, and all murders were carried out in virtually the same manner. Mansfield was released after a special Grand Jury of Montgomery County refused to indict him, on grounds that his alibi checked out. Nine months before the murders at Villisca, a similar case of axe murder occurred in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Two axe murder cases followed in Ellsworth, Kansas, and Paola, Kansas.

Exactly one month later, on the third of January, a second murder takes place with the message "The second letter of the name has been uttered" left at the crime site. Predictably, the same thing happens on the third of February, with the message reading "The last letter of the name has been uttered." However, Lönnrot isn't convinced that the spree is at an end, as the Tetragrammaton contains four letters—two of them being the same letter repeated. Furthermore, he surmises that the murders may actually have taken place on the fourth of December, January, and February, respectively, since a new day begins at sunset within the Jewish calendar (the murders were all committed at night).

(The suspect was William Garretson, a youth who was employed as caretaker of the property where the Tate murders took place and who happened to have been the only person found alive on the premises the morning after the killings. By August 11, having been effectively dismissed as a suspect, he was released from custody.) The story did not indicate that the words "Healter [sic] Skelter" had been written in LaBianca's blood at the crime site, that information not having leaked to the press.

Even the police tried for days to make contact with "EG_A", but without succeeding. Furthermore, since cell phones always connect to the strongest cell site, and cell phones rescan quite frequently to be sure they are continuously connected to the strongest cell site, it was clear, even if "EG_A" against all odds had coverage at that particular time, that Kristiansen could not have been near the crime site. While the report from Telenor stated that Kristiansen had an alibi without reservations, the report from Teleplan opened up "a small possibility that the cell site connected to Kristiansen's mobile phone could reach the crime area under extraordinary circumstances". The report from Teleplan was only presented in the second trial, and the exception was included in the report due to uncertainty since the conditions had changed since the time of the crime.
