Repp drew a measure of notoriety from the mainstream journalistic media in 1997 when he sued composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, asserting that Lloyd Webber had plagiarized portions of his "Phantom Song" from his own composition "Till You." Lloyd Webber, however, cross-litigated in counter-accusation that Repp had, in turn, plagiarized portions of "Till You" from "Close Every Door," from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. On paying off this ship Clements refused to give a certificate of service to the ship's master, whom he reported as 'inattentive to his duty.' The master made a counter-accusation that Clements had misused and wasted the ship's stores, but in November 1765 a Navy Board inquiry dismissed this allegation as both groundless and inspired by malice. In December 1765, Clements married a London woman, Miss Hopton, who brought with her a substantial personal fortune of £10,000. In 1769 Clements commanded of 70 guns, guardship at Portsmouth, but which in 1770 was sent up the Mediterranean as part of the answer to a threatening armament of the French at Toulon.

Other than Alexandra protests occurred in Hammanskraal, Roodepoort, Vereeniging, Kroonstad, Blackheath, Tshwane, Bekkersdal, Orange Grove, Nomzamo Lingelethu East, Bergville, Bekkersdal, Caledon, Eersteriver, Rus-ter-Vaal, Khayelitsha, Riverlea, and Soweto. The major political parties traded accusations over the cause of the riots. The African National Congress (ANC) accused the Democratic Alliance (DA) of not effectively delivering services to the protesting communities and the DA made a counter accusation that it was ANC governance in Johannesburg two years before was the root cause of poor service delivery in Alexandra. The protests were openly supported by the trade union SAFTU who called on other areas to join the protests.

Conway was re-elected to the House of Commons in April 1761, this time for Thetford and on 4 July 1761 he became a member of the Privy Council. As a senior member of the Rockingham faction of the Whigs, he opposed the King's legal actions against the reformist John Wilkes in 1763 which resulted in his dismissal in 1764 as a Groom of the Bedchamber and as Colonel of the 1st Royal Dragoons. This led to the publication of accusation and counter-accusation in pamphlets, as it was feared that the government intended to purge the army of its political opponents. He entered office with Lord Rockingham as Secretary of State for the Southern Department in July 1765 before switching to the Northern Department in May 1766, serving until January 1768, when he became a Minister without Portfolio.
