Following the decree-law n. 138 of 13 August 2011, the number of regional councillors was reduced to 50, with an additional seat reserved for the President of the Region.

Councillors can be chosen to act as aldermen. In that case, they lose their seats on the council and their places are taken by other representatives of the same political parties. Non-councillors can also be appointed. Unlike councillors and aldermen, mayors are not elected (not even indirectly), but are appointed by the Crown.

This means elections for new councillors are held for three years running, with one year every four years having no elections. Pursuant to Part 5, Division 1 of the Municipal Government Act (MGA), each municipality created under the authority of the MGA is governed by an elected council. As a requirement of the MGA, a city council consists of an odd number of councillors, one of which is the city's chief elected official (CEO) or mayor. A city council consists of seven councillors by default, but it can consist of a higher or lower odd number if council passes a bylaw altering its size (so long as it does not consist of fewer than three councillors). City councils are governed by a mayor who is elected at large and an even number of councillors, resulting in a total odd number of councillors to avoid tie votes on council matters.

During 1984/85, there was a strong bid by councillors all over Fiji asking the Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs to implement the 1982 report on "Remuneration and Allowances for Councillors". Sukhdeo was opposed to any substantial remuneration to councillors, as he viewed councillors' role as that of selfless service at the local level. He wrote a letter directed at the Minister resulting in the Minister diffusing any bid for remuneration for councillors. Noting that the management board of the Fiji Trades Union Congress was heavily tilted in favour of large white collar union leaders and almost all external seminars/conferences were being earmarked for the board members, Sukhdeo steered the union away from the ICFTU affiliated congress activities towards affiliation with the Russian backed World Federation of Trade Unions and its affiliates.

West Sussex County Council (WSCC) is the authority that governs the non-metropolitan county of West Sussex. The county contains 7 district and borough councils (Adur, Arun, Chichester, Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and Worthing), and 159 town, parish and neighbourhood councils. West Sussex County Council has 71 councillors; the majority of them being Conservative. There are 46 Conservative councillors, 10 UK Independence Party, 8 Liberal Democrats, 6 Labour Party councillors and 1 Independent councillor.

Middlesex County Council was the principal local government body in the administrative county of Middlesex, England from 1889 to 1965. The county council consisted of ¾ elected councillors and ¼ co-opted county aldermen. The entire body of elected councillors was elected every three years. Aldermen (who could be male or female) had a six-year term of office, thus one half of their number was elected by the councillors immediately after the triennial elections.

Results by ward. Elections to the Corporation of the City of Glasgow were held on Tuesday 3 November 1896, alongside municipal elections across Scotland, and the wider British local elections. Brockley ward is represented by three Labour councillors as of the 2018 election. Elections were held on 1 May 2003 to elect 65 local councillors for Bath and North East Somerset Council. The results are show below. Following the election, a coalition was formed between the Liberal Democrats and Conservative councillors. Cllr Paul Crossley became leader of the council.

Staffordshire County Council is the top-tier local authority for the non- metropolitan county of Staffordshire, England. 62 councillors sit on Staffordshire County Council. Staffordshire operates a cabinet-style council. The full council elects a cabinet of 10 councillors, including the council leader, from the majority party.

At the lowest level of local government, Ewloe is an electoral ward that elects community councillors to Hawarden Community Council. By late 2004, there were growing signs of disunity between the COPE mayor and some COPE councillors. Campbell formed an independent caucus along with three of his COPE colleagues (although they all remained as members of the party). The other COPE councillors remained in the original COPE caucus. The maverick COPE councillors (dubbed "COPE Lite" or "Diet COPE" by the media) eventually separated and formed a new party, Vision Vancouver, to run in the 2005 municipal election.

In 2011, the seats were held by four Liberal Democrat and five Conservative councillors. For elections to the Cambridgeshire County Council the city returns two councillors, both of whom were Conservatives in 2013. For elections to the UK Parliament, Ely is part of the South East Cambridgeshire constituency.

Aberystwyth-Penparcau is the most populous electoral division in Ceredigion and elects two county councillors. Penparcau is also the name of the village which covers a portion of the electoral division consisting of the areas of Southgate and Caeffynnon. Five town councillors represent the ward on the Aberystwyth Town Council, one of the 51 town and community councils in Ceredigion and consists of 19 town councillors elected in five wards. The last elections were held in May 2017.

The composition of the Great Council was noticeably stable throughout the centuries. It had one chairman or president, 15 to 16 councillors, one procureur-general, one replacement procureur-general, one fiscal advocate, 10 paid secretaries, two or three clerks, advocates and lastly Huissier de justice. Tochigi at-large district is a constituency of the House of Councillors in the Diet of Japan (national legislature). It consists of Tochigi Prefecture and elects two Councillors, one per election. Between 1947 and 2007 Tochigi was represented by four councillors, elected two at a time by single non- transferable vote. Like many two-member districts Tochigi often split seats between the two major postwar parties: the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Japan Socialist Party (JSP).

UKIP's Lawrence Webb gained his seat from the Conservatives following the death of veteran Conservative, Cllr. Dennis Bull. In July 2013, thirteen Conservative councillors were reported by the local press, the Romford Recorder, as being deselected by the Romford Conservative Association including council cabinet members, formal complaints were made to Conservative Party Headquarters, and later three Conservative councillors defected to UKIP. Riverview first became a permanent settlement when settlers from Yorkshire, England, settled there in 1733. The Town of Riverview was formed on July 9, 1973 with the amalgamation of the three villages of Bridgedale, Gunningsville and Riverview Heights. Harold Findlay became the first mayor and seven councillors were elected at-large to serve a population of 14,177. Since that time, Riverview has grown to include almost 19,130 represented by four ward councillors and three councillors-at-large.

In turn, the councillors have the power to remove the head of government from office. After a motion of censure is approved by at least one-fifth of the councillors, the council will vote and if it receives the absolute majority of votes, the head of government is removed.

Township councils in Ontario play a similar role as city councils in cities for smaller or low tier municipalities. Directly elected every four years, the number of councillors vary depending on the size of their municipalities. The councillors powers and responsibilities are governed by the Municipal Act, 2001.

At a local level, Catsfield is governed by a parish council which is responsible for street lighting, allotments and recreational areas. They provide a local voice to the district and county councils. The parish council consists of seven councillors. In the May 2007 election, the seven councillors were uncontested.
|

However, not all council elections were contested, as the number of candidates was not greater than the seats available. Four parish councils with insufficient candidates would not have enough councillors to function after the elections. Councils that have vacancies after the elections would attempt to co-opt additional councillors.

Huntingdon has a town council with 19 councillors, as elsewhere elected every four years. Two of the councillors serve also as mayor and deputy mayor. Meetings are normally held once a month at the town hall. Huntingdonshire District Council has three wards: Huntingdon North, Huntingdon East and Huntingdon West.

Holy Trinity is the name given to the ward to the south and south east of Guildford town. This ward elects three councillors. In 2003 it returned two Liberal Democrats and one Conservative. Neither of the two Liberal Democrat councillors Tamsy Baker nor Gordon Bridger stood in 2007.

13 councillors sought re-election, with the councillors who stood down at the election including the Conservative former council chairman Tony Walker from Kingham, Rollright and Enstone ward, the Liberal Democrat group leader Stuart Brooks of Freeland and Hanborough ward, and independent Derrick Millard of Stonesfield and Tackley ward.

The 2017 Scottish local elections were held on Thursday 4 May, in all 32 local authorities. The SNP retained its position as the largest party in terms of votes and councillors, despite suffering minor losses. The Conservatives made gains and displaced Labour as the second largest party, while the Liberal Democrats suffered a net loss of councillors despite increasing their share of the vote. Minor parties and independents polled well; and independent councillors retained majority control over the three island councils.

Before May 2007, councillors represented 43 single-member wards election on a first-past-the-post basis. On 5 May 2007, the single transferable vote system was used for the first time and multi-member wards were introduced, each ward electing three or four councillors. It was established on 30 January 1976 with the amalgamation of the District Council of Marne and the District Council of Sedan. Chepstow is administered by Monmouthshire County Council, one of the 22 unitary local authorities in Wales formed in 1996. The town elects five county councillors, for the wards of Larkfield, St Christopher's, St Kingsmark, St Mary's, and Thornwell. Elections to Metropolitan Borough of Southwark were held on Monday 2 November 1925. The borough council had sixty councillors, all of whom were elected together at triennial elections. The borough was divided into ten wards which returned between 3 and 9 members. In addition to the councillors, the council also included aldermen.

Where the number of elected councillors was insufficient, councillors could elect further members by secret ballot. The colleges then elected the members of the Legislative Council; preliminary ballots were used to eliminate the lowest- scoring candidate until only two remained, at which point the candidate with a majority of votes was elected.
