From the earliest days, the dances and the music that accompanied them were brought to The United States by the people of the British Isles, continental Europe, and Africa. The Virginia Reel, based on the "Sir Roger de Coverly" became popular after the French Revolution. Quadrilles, too, including the cotillon, anglicized as cotillion, were brought to America by French dancing masters. Their influence survives in terms used in square dancing.

Research conducted in the 20th century also revealed the existence of folk songs in English (e.g. "The Greenland Whale Fishery", "Died for Love".) Only one folk song is believed to be of specifically Jersey provenance with no variants collected elsewhere: "La Chanson de Peirson". Very little survives of an indigenous musical or dance tradition. Written testimony from the 20th century (Frank Le Maistre; George F. Le Feuvre) points to the practice of archaic dance-forms such as the "ronde" or round dance, 18th-century dances such as the cotillon and 19th- century forms such as the polka, the schottische and the quadrille.

At Manchester Racecourse on 25 May 1988 Reve d'Or finished unplaced under top weight of 120 pounds in the fourteen furlong Manchester Cup. She started 2/1 favourite in her second attempt to win the Ascot Gold Cup on 14 June but came home at the rear of the five-runner field behind Timothy. On 9 October at Newmarket she finished unplaced under 121 pounds in the Cesarewitch. Two weeks later she ran unplaced in the Cambridgeshire but in the Jockey Club Cup at the same meeting she won the Jockey Club Cup at odds of 1/2, beating her only rival Cotillon by half a length.

At the king's request, it was organized by the Duke of Saint-Aignan, who took the title from a popular episode in cantos 6–8 and 10 of the 1516 Italian epic Orlando furioso by Ludovico Ariosto, in which the knight Ruggiero (in French, Roger) becomes a prisoner of love at the sorceress Alcina's court. It was staged to celebrate the beginning of the building campaigns for the Chateau de Versailles with the intention to acquaint those involved in its construction—the King's wife, mother, lovers, mistresses, and family in general—to cotillon style ball and overall culture. In addition, there were about 600 invited guests. Molière played a large role in the organisation of festivities, which featured the premières of La Princesse d'Élide and Tartuffe.
