Edna L. Emme (April 14, 1899 – August 22, 1995) was a cosmetologist. She founded the National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association, now known as the National Cosmetology Association. Emme served five times as the president of the association, and in 1938 visited the White House. Asymmetric cuts can confer an aesthetic property known to professional hairdressers and cosmetologists as "asymmetrical balance" when they balance asymmetrical facial features. Formaldehyde can be found in a variety of beauty products but is generally found in hair straightening products and hair dyes as well as in some nail polishes. Each chemical member of the toxic trio has independently been found to have adverse reproductive effects in humans, so there concern that the presence of all three chemicals in cosmetologist supplies could pose a detrimental health risk for cosmetologists.

In 1922, Noda was hired to teach dental hygiene to children for the Hawaii Department of Public Instruction. By 1925, she started a chain of beauty salons in Hawaii. That same year, Noda served as personal interpreter and guide when Princess Nobuko Asaka toured the islands. The ends of the hair were held on the roller which was wound around a point until it reached the clamp into which it was inserted. For obvious reasons, this was called point-winding. Mayer attempted to claim a patent on this method of winding, which was challenged in a Federal lawsuit by the National Hairdressers' and Cosmetologists' Association. The toxic trio consists of formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). DBP is commonly found in nail polish and is used as a binder to increase the amount of time that the polish stays on the nail.

Afro-Sheen, one of Johnson's best-known products, was released in the late 1960s, at a time when the "Afro" became a popular hairstyle for African Americans. In some countries, including the U.S., hair removal is an unregulated procedure that anyone can do. In 1980 the Retail Clerks International Association had merged with the Amalgamated Meat Cutters to create the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) International Union. Food processing workers boot and shoe factory workers, health care workers, clerical and professional administrators as well as insurance agents and barbers, hairdressers and cosmetologists all unified during the course of the 1980s. To celebrate the newfound unity of so diverse a union membership, Local 1357 changed to the historic Local number "1776" in May 1989. Researchers have tested the efficacy of topical rose hip seed oil together with an oral fat-soluble vitamins on different inflammatory dermatitis such as eczema, neurodermatitis, and cheilitis, with promising findings of the topical use of rose hip seed oil on these inflammatory dermatose. Due its high composition of UFAs and antioxidants, rose hip oil has relatively high protection against inflammation and oxidative stress. Research on rose hip oil has shown that it reduces skin pigmentation, reduces discolouration, acne lesions, scars and stretch marks, as well as retaining the moisture of the skin and delaying the appearance of wrinkles. Cosmetologists recommend wild rose seed oil as a natural skin-vitaliser.

It originated as one of a variety of elaborately teased and lacquered versions of "big hair" that developed from earlier pageboy and bouffant styles. It was developed in 1960 by Margaret Vinci Heldt of Elmhurst, Illinois, owner of the Margaret Vinci Coiffures in downtown Chicago, who won the National Coiffure Championship in 1954, and who had been asked by the editors of Modern Beauty Salon magazine to design a new hairstyle that would reflect the coming decade. She originally modeled it on a fez-like hat that she owned. In recognition of her achievement, Cosmetologists Chicago, a trade association with 60,000 members, created a scholarship in Heldt’s name for creativity in hairdressing.

The Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) is the agency charged with licensing and regulating more than one million businesses and professionals in the State of Florida, such as cosmetologists, veterinarians, real estate agents, hotels and restaurants and pari-mutuel wagering facilities. On the Department's website, consumers and licensees can verify licenses, file a complaint against licensed or unlicensed individuals, apply for or renew licenses, search food and lodging inspections, search for or request public records and read about recent Department initiatives. The Department is under the executive branch of the Governor and is governed by Chapter 120, F.S. The Department is structured according to the requirements of Section 20.165, F.S. In recent years, the Department has significantly reduced the average professional license processing time. In October 2008, the average was more than 41 days and at the end of 2012, the average was less than two days.

Her next step was to create an American association of skin care specialists (estheticians), an association which gained the respect of the international governing body of skin care professionals, CIDESCO. "[T]hrough her years", said the National Cosmetologists Association, "she has brought respectability and professionalism not only to the skin care and esthetics specialties but to cosmetology at large." In 1975, after graduating with a master's degree from Boston University, her daughter Marina Valmy combined her knowledge of Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs, medicinal plants, oriental treatments and chemistry to create a laboratory where she could create all-natural products. The company’s laboratory is in Pine Brook, New Jersey, where it develops, manufactures and warehouses its products. In 1985, Christine Valmy was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve on the United States National Council on Vocational Education, in recognition of her contribution in the education field, and to assist in developing the country’s policies on vocational education, in which capacity she served until 1991.
