In a reference to Foucault's great Confinement in Discipline and Punish, Christie says that these "new great confinements" are part of an "unparalled escalation of prison populations" with "combat-style probation officers", and "widespread privatization" of prisons. In her widely cited 2006 book entitled, The Prison and the Gallows: The Politics of Mass Incarceration in America, Marie Gottschalk, an American political scientist and professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania, traced the origins and construction of the carceral state in the United States from the 1920s through the 1960s. In The Prison and the Gallows she made reference to Foucault's "carceral archipelago".

The widespread acceptance of the Razmgah by people attracted the authorities and some political parties requesting cooperation. The requests denied by the founder as the community denounced any political cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran to be against the statute of the Razmgah. In the morning of December 5, 2008, agents of the Ministry of Intelligence detained Yekita and the director of the Razmgah while they were on the way to the campus. The agents detained several members of the Razmgah within a week which were sent to solitary confinements in a detention center of the Ministry of Intelligence located in Sari, Iran.

In the Book Three finale, Korra initially accepts Zaheer's terms to turn herself in, until learning of Zaheer's bluff regarding the Air Nation. In the ensuing battle, P'Li is killed, and despite being grief-stricken by his girlfriend's death, Zaheer's loss enables him to unlock the power of flight, which requires the abandonment of all "earthly tethers". Zaheer captures Korra, and the Red Lotus reveals that they would invoke the Avatar State by poisoning her, only to kill her and end the Avatar Cycle. However, the sheer power of the Avatar State proves too much for the Red Lotus to contain, and Korra escapes her confinements and engages in a lengthy aerial battle with Zaheer.

Among the challenge of posed by the adaptation process is how a faithful depiction of Philippine prisons would affect the film's plot. In the original South Korean film, the prisons were closed confinements with metal doors while in the Philippines prisons are less restrictive with metal railings instead which would pose problem on how the lead character's fellow inmates would hide his daughter from the jail wardens. The Philippine film also had less focus on the trial portion compared to its South Korean counterpart. Nadine Lustre was supposed to play Padilla's role but withdrew from the film project citing a need to take a break after her stints with two 2019 films, Ulan and Indak.

23,456 In Maryland in 1910, lay midwives who had in many cases been practicing for decades were required to be recognized by the state in order to practice. They had to be able to read and write, to attend at least five confinements under supervision, and to demonstrate to the state board of health that they could attend to normal labor. The state also had regulatory measures which required doctors to check in after every midwife- assisted birth so that they could identify and report any infractions made by the midwives. Eight years later in 1918, Alabama passed a law requiring all midwives currently practicing in the state to register with the state board of health and to pass an elementary examination.

According to the DVD commentary, choosing the villain of the movie was a problematic part of the production, as the makers did not feel comfortable simply giving the role to an "anonymous monster", and that the ending was in "bits and pieces" and the "confinements forced them to be creative." The Sloane Maternity Hospital was originally created to focus solely on obstetrical care and would refer all gynecological patients to the Vanderbilt Clinic. Dr. McLane recorded the early obstetrical care at Sloane Maternity Hospital in his report "Report on the First Series of One Thousand Successive Confinements from January 1st, 1988 to October 1st, 1890 at Sloane Maternity Hospital." The hospital implemented the use of carbolic acid to clean the lying-in wards and banned the use of straw beds to create sanitary conditions for the patients. The procedure of a delivery consisted of rectal anema and vaginal douche before the birth, delivery of the baby while the mother was on her side, and a final vaginal douche after the placenta was delivered.

The Citadel emphasizes a strict disciplinary and physical fitness indoctrination for fourth-class cadets, who were formerly called knobs because of the shaved heads of the males, which they had to maintain until the Spring when they were then recognized as fourth-class cadets. The haircut policy changed starting with the 2019-2020 academic year, where fourth-class male cadets only have to shave their heads during their initial week but can otherwise have hair as long as Department of Defense regulations allow it. Cadets who accumulate too many demerits or breach regulations can be punished by serving confinements or tours. A tour is one hour spent marching in the barracks with a rifle at shoulder arms and is normally performed when a cadet would otherwise be permitted to leave campus.

The project uses digital and social media to expand the conversation about global poverty beyond the confinements of academia. Rather than provide solutions to global poverty, it encourages people to reflect and critically engage with their relationship to spatially distant poverty as well as poverty that exists within the context of one’s everyday life. Videos narrated by Roy, Khalid Kadir (UC Berkeley lecturer), Genevieve Negrón- Gonzales (University of San Francisco professor), and Clare Talwalker (UC Berkeley lecturer) are uploaded to YouTube, and conversations are encouraged over twitter via the hashtag, #GlobalPOV. Since the inauguration of President Trump in 2016, Roy has published several articles about the need for planners to be politically engaged. Together with the UCLA Abolitionist Planning Group, Roy created a resource guide titled “Abolitionist Planning for Resistance” that frames key issues around which to mobilize political action such as civil liberties, policing, housing rights, union labor, sanctuary cities, and environmental justice.
