Thus, the child's father will call the child's godmother "comadre," while she will call him "compadre," and so on. Traditionally among Iberians and Latin Americans, this relationship formalizes a pre-existing friendship which results in a strong lifelong bond between compadres. In its original form, the compadre relationship is among the strongest types of family love soon after one's nuclear family. In many Latin American societies, lifelong friends or siblings who have always spoken to each other informally (using the informal Spanish second-person, tú) may mark their new compadre relationship by using respectful or formal speech (using the formal Spanish second-person, usted).
Then, as today, the meat was rolled in a mixture of salt, pepper, and garlic salt before being barbecued over the red oak coals, which contribute a smoky, hearty flavor. In the 1950s, a local butcher named Bob Schutz (Santa Maria Market) perfected the tri-tip, a triangular bottom sirloin cut that quickly joined top sirloin as a staple of Santa Maria-style barbecue. President Ronald Reagan was an avid fan of Santa Maria-style barbecue. Local barbecue chef Bob Herdman and his Los Compadres Barbecue Crew staged several barbecues for President Reagan, including five feasts on the South Lawn of the White House.

Cowboy Jubilee is the second studio album by the Western band Riders in the Sky, released in 1981, featuring a title track originally written by Ken Carson of the Sons of the Pioneers. This album features the demanding art of yodeling in harmony; the Riders create arrangements worthy of their original inspirations, Sons of the Pioneers. Originally released on vinyl in 1981 and as a CD in 1990, this album includes their own originals (including "Compadres in the Old Sierra Madres") that compare favorably with their versions of older Western classics. This album was featured on The New York Times' "Best Ten List" for 1982 and was voted "Best Independent Country Album of the Year".

Norty Cotto's mixed compilations also became classics. Fulanito and their LP "El hombre mas famoso de la tierra" is a good combination of house and Latin-American rhythms from that time. El General's "Muevelo" was another of the tunes of that time remixed to the sounds of Latin house by DJ, Producer Pablo Pabanor Ortiz & Erick More Morillo and Latin House party 2 in collaboration with Producer Rafael Torres, Ray Abraxas and Davidson Ospina.

These two stones, one on top of the other in strange balance, have stood the test of time as well as historical earthquakes. They are not small at all: the upper stone is about the size of a regular sedan and together they reach a height of about three meters and a calculated weight of 50 tons. A legend in Esquipulas says that two friends became "compadres" (godfathers to the offspring of the other), but in spite of this sacred pact, one of them was carried away by desire and seduced the other's wife. They were turned into stone as punishment for their sins, left for all to see their forbidden desire for each other, among the whispering wind and swaying trees.
A standing room only crowd at the Uptown Bar and Grill witnesses the extremely under-publicized farewell show on December 1, 2001. Wrote sound man Eric Shosted after the event: "I have to admit the last refrain of the last performance of Home Cookin' almost brought tears to my eyes, and seeing you guys still play with a real sense of enjoyment even after some of the shittiest gigs in recent memory made me real proud to think of you as compadres. I look forward to seeing what other projects lay ahead of each one of you as your roads diverge." In 2002, Puafua was nominated by the Minnesota Music Academy for Eclectic Band of the Year nine months after its farewell show.
In fact, Sabicas and Mario Escudero were not only "compadres" (Sabicas was the godfather of one of Mario's children, Agustín Mario Manuel), but were related through family ties through Jiménez, Carbonell and Gabarre. Both had several common ancestors, the best known being Agustina Escudero Heredia (known as the "Queen of the Gypsies"), married to Benigno García Gabarre, and one of Ignacio Zuloaga's (well known Spanish painter) main models. Agustina was also the mother of the bullfighter Rafael Albaicín and the dancers Miguel and Maria Albaicín. Praise and standing ovations from critics and public paved the way for more work, with Escudero touring throughout Europe, South America, and eventually the US. His first two solo Carnegie Hall concerts sold out, and garnered acclaim and praise, leading to several television appearances.

The AllMusic review by Thom Jurek states "One Is the Other is the sound of an experienced and deeply intuitive quartet speaking in a colorful and precise language numerous dialects and approaches to musical speech". The Guardian's John Fordham noted "For anyone open to spontaneous musical conversation, regardless of genre, this beautifully crafted album is likely to appeal – but aficionados will probably get more from it, since veteran drum star and former Herbie Hancock sideman Hart and his superb quartet constantly hint at references from all over the jazz tradition".Fordham, J. The Guardian Review, March 14, 2014 Steve Greenlee wrote in JazzTimes that "The Billy Hart Quartet gets more laidback with each release. One Is the Other is the group’s third effort (and second on ECM), and it is a demonstrably looser, freer affair than its predecessors. It’s as though the veteran drummer and his younger compadres—tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Ben Street—decided they’d proven themselves and can now take more risks with their music".

Benito Viceto published a History of Galicia (1865–1866) a heroic narrative of Galician history in six volumes. Important works from this period include the Proezas de Galicia ("Prowess of Galicia") by Fernández Neira, A gaita gallega ("The Galician Bagpipes") by Juan Manuel Pintos (1853), the founding of the Juegos Florales de Galicia ("Floral Games of Galicia") in A Coruña (1861), as well as publications such as El álbum de la caridad ("The Charity Album") and newspapers that published fragments of Galician-language novels and plays. The two foremost Galician- language genres from this time were political writings and the revival of Galician as a literary language. The first of the political writings were linked to the Peninsular War, viewed throughout Spain as a war of independence against Napoleonic France: Un labrador que foi sarxento ("A farmer who was a sergeant", 1808) and several dialogues, the first of them being Proezas de Galicia explicadas baxo la conversación rústica de los dos compadres Chinto y Mingote ("Prowess of Galicia explained through the rustic conversation of two comrades Chinto and Mingote") by José Fernández de Neira (1812).
