Nandy Bagan or Nandi Bagan is a neighbourhood of South Kolkata in the Indian city of Kolkata in West Bengal. It is a residential area surrounded with Kasba, Haltu, Garfa, Jadavpur, Babu Bagan, Dhakuria, Naskarpara, Shahid Nagar, Bosepukur and Selimpur. It is traditionally an upper middle class neighbourhood, situated around the Nandi Bagan community playground. However, with the newly constructed Prince Anwar Shah Road connector with the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, property prices have increased in the area.

A community playground was erected in 1975 and upgraded to modern standards in 2013 by local residents through fundraising. In 2019, the tennis courts at the south-western end of the playing fields were converted to a multi-use-games area, created for the use by local sports clubs and for residents alike. The sum of A$250 000 was raised from community sponsorship before the playground was built using community labour over the period of 18–23 June 2002. Born in Jerome, Idaho, to a nursing home employee and a truck driver, Hammond is the seventh of eight children. Two years after Hammond's father abandoned the family, Hammond's mother had a breakdown and found herself unable to take care of the children, and they were sent as wards of the court to the Mooseheart Child City & School, a group home in Mooseheart, Illinois. During the 14 happy years he spent at the home before achieving the age of majority, he enjoyed his experiences on the group home's playground, and in his junior year at Ripon College first took part in helping to build a community playground, assisting the mother of a friend. The dyslexic Hammond did not complete college, but relocated to Chicago as part of an Urban Studies Fellowship through the Associated Colleges of the Midwest.

However, one of the main purposes of building the expansive Collaborative was to create and maintain an ongoing community partnership of local and national non-profit agencies focusing on improving and enhancing the lives of underserved children and families residing in the Sweet Auburn and Old Fourth Ward geographic areas, as well as, surrounding Fulton counties in Atlanta. The community Cyber Cafe hosted by Operation Hope, as well as, office and suite space for the Collaborative's in house community partners, along with the Collaborative's Executive Director, Detria Russell is located throughout the Martin Luther King Sr. Community Resources Collaborative's three floors. Because the Collaborative is located in the "National Historic King District," The National Park Service administers the Collaborative's parking lot and surrounding land, which includes the old Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church building, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth home and gravesite, as well as, a community playground.
