Ava Clayton Spencer was born on December 15, 1954 in Concord, North Carolina, the daughter of Ava Clark Spencer and Samuel Reid Spencer, one of four children. Her father was history professor who served as the president of Mary Baldwin College from 1957 to 1968 and Davidson College from 1968 to 1983. The Miami University Auditorium Building was built in 1907–08 on Miami University's campus, and was also known as the Administration Building. It was officially named Benton Hall in 1926 after Miami's twelfth president, Guy Potter Benton. Benton Hall also contained administrative offices, including the offices of the president, dean, and business manager on the second floor with the registrar, YMCA and The Miami Student holding office space on the main floor. Benton Hall was the principal assembly hall for graduations and commencements until 1932 when Withrow Court became the location of the major convocations and performing arts programs.

The arena was originally built in 1991 with a capacity of 5,100 and was home to men's basketball, women's basketball, and volleyball, and was also used for events such as concerts and commencements. It has hosted the Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball tournament three times, in 1994, 1995, and 2002. The last basketball game played in the original facility was on March 3, 2007, when the UCF men's team beat the East Carolina Pirates, 77–64, in Conference USA play. While basketball moved into the new arena, the men's and women's volleyball teams continue to play their regular-season games at the Venue.

Tombs in the Valley of the Kings are assigned a numerical KV (for Kings' Valley) or WV (for West Valley) designation in the order of their discovery. Besides these numbered tombs there is also a series of pits and possible tomb commencements, ordered in an alphabetical sequence from WVA (actually a small tomb) to KVT although the exact number of these pits, and in many cases their location, is not known. The assignment of this alphabetical sequence has been done by more recent researchers, often on the basis of cursory references in older reports or field notes.

After the creation of the Soviet Union, from 1924 the Vserabis () was known by the abbreviation "ВСЕсоюзный профессиональный союз РАботников ИСкусства" (). Some big cities or regions adjusted the name RABIS to incorporate the name of their region: Petrorabis (Petrograd RABIS); Mosgubrabis (Moscow guberniya RABIS); Gruzrabis (Gruziya RABIS). RABIS, Sorabis and then Vserabis united all art workers "on the voluntary commencements". The Russian phrase "на добровольных началах" () includes sarcasm, which means that each art worker entered into this trade union voluntarily (voluntary commencement), but the rest of the art workers, who left or had not joined the trade union organisation, would have difficulties with finding and holding jobs.

Harriet Fulbright serves as an "unofficial ambassador" for the Fulbright Program and is often invited to speak at events that range from university commencements to milestone anniversaries for Fulbright Commissions around the world who are celebrating the presence of her late husband's educational exchange program in their respective countries. As a result of her status as an international figure of peace and education, she has received many awards and honorary degrees. She currently sits on the advisory board of the Alliance for Peacebuilding. In 2006, she created the J. William & Harriet Fulbright Center, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting peace through international education and furthering her late husband's legacy.

During Smith's first term as Executive Director of the NFLPA, the issue that dominated dialogue was the 2011 lockout. With improved player safety, better player salaries, long-term health care, and increased benefits for retired NFL players in mind, DeMaurice Smith helped the NFLPA negotiate with the NFL owners and agree on a new collective bargaining agreement in July 2011. In 2008 Lehrman began writing "Companion," finishing the next year. He used over two hundred examples taken mostly from American political speeches to demonstrate how one structure, Monroe's Motivated Sequence, and what he calls the LAWS of political speech—language, anecdote, wit, and support—can be effective in almost any political setting. In chapters that included speeches and excerpts annotated to show how each technique worked, Lehrman analyzed ways to be effective, whether on the stump, on the Floor, or in ceremonial speeches ranging from commencements to eulogies to keynotes. He also presented an original way to close speeches that has been compared to what Alan Monroe did for the motivated sequence.

When he assumed the presidency in 1967, there were sixty-one black students and no black professors; when O'Connell retired in 1973, 642 black students were enrolled, a ten-fold increase, and the faculty included nineteen black professors. O'Connell's critics accused him of racial and political animus in his sometimes hard-line decisions, but his administration kept the university open, and classes, exams and commencements were held without serious interruption in the aftermath of the Kent State shootings, when many American universities were forced to close and send their students home.

In 1980, Jeannie was invited to join a UN organization, the United Nations Population Fund, as their Deputy Director of Public Information and External Relations. For the next 18 years Jeannie worked primarily for organizations in the UN, mainly UNFPA, which is the provider of family planning and safe motherhood assistance to developing countries (at UNFPA's New York HQ; in Washington, D.C. and in the Philippines where she headed a $25 million program of assistance). She also worked for the UN Department of Education for Sustainable Development at the UN headquarters in New York, preparing population and environment issues for governments around the world. She was often sent around the United States with non-governmental organizations to address civic groups, college commencements, graduate classes, television, and radio.

Robert J. Collier, the author of the Alma Mater The Georgetown University Alma Mater is one of the traditional songs of Georgetown University, and the university's official and undisputed alma mater. It was written to the tune of the Welsh battle song Men of Harlech in 1894 by Robert J. Collier, a Georgetown student. The song is performed by the university orchestra and occasionally other groups at various school events, including commencements and athletic games. The words and length of the alma mater have changed several times since the original writing, most notably in 1984, when the university changed the first line of the Alma Mater from "Sons of Georgetown, Alma Mater," to "Hail, oh Georgetown, Alma Mater," in an effort to promote gender equity.

In this early model for comprehensive musicianship, students sang and played the music, wrote essays, and took exams, receiving one half credit for each semester of work. In 1898 Earhart formed a school orchestra at Richmond, and although it usually met outside of school hours, these students also received a half credit each semester if they were deemed capable of public performance according to the high standards Earhart maintained for the group. The orchestra performed at many school events such as chapel services, commencements, and assemblies. Instrument gaps were filled with community members, alumni, and hired professionals when needed, but Earhart believed it was better to play good symphonic literature with thin instrumentation than to compromise the quality of the music.

The Senate votes on the name put forward by a voice vote, in Latin. The senior master non regent is elected for a one-year term, but may be re elected. (A Master of Arts is called a regent during the three years following the time when he or she took that degree; subsequently he or she is designated as non-regent, and one elected by the Senate from among the masters non-regent, by statute, is, according to ancient usage, designated as "senior master non-regent".) The senior and junior proctors and the registrar also make the declaration which is appropriate to their respective offices at that meeting.

The buttons had OAC on them, for the then Oregon Agricultural College. Two historic leaders were at OAC during this period: College President William Jasper Kerr, who was far seeing in his objectives and believed in the distribution of responsibility; and Captain Ulysses G. McAlexander, whose record as a commandant and soldier was outstanding. McAlexander was commandant and professor of Military Science and Tactics from 1907–1912, and again from 1915–1916. While at OAC, he increased the battalions to four, and replaced the old Springfield rifles with the then modern Krag–Jørgensen rifles, securing 720 of them for the 700 Cadets. The military band was increased to 60 pieces and played at commencements. Captain H. L. Beard, long their conductor, took the band to the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, California, where they played for a month, bringing much acclaim to Oregon State.

Student-athletes compete at the intervarsity level in football (men); volleyball, soccer, golf, and swimming and diving (women); and basketball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis (men and women). The university participates in 15 intercollegiate sports programs. NAU teams compete at the Walkup Skydome, a multipurpose building providing facilities for football, basketball, indoor track and field, soccer, weight lifting, lacrosse, student recreation, major concert events, commencements, intramurals, and a variety of other university and community activities. The Rolle Activity Center provides physical education classrooms and contains courts for recreational and varsity sports, including NAU's volleyball team, with seating for almost 1,100. The building is named after Joseph C. Rolle—“Mr. Lumberjack” in 1989. Rolle played basketball from 1937 to 1941, served as student body president, and received a BA in 1941 and MA in education in 1950 from Arizona State College of Flagstaff. He later earned an EdS from Columbia University and then worked at NAU for 36 years in positions ranging from bookstore manager to Dean of Students and Dean of University Services.

The NCSU Bell Tower is lit with red lights after athletic victories and other university successes. The Belltower is illuminated with red floodlights on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, during spring and winter commencements, for the inauguration of the President of the University of North Carolina or for the installation of the Chancellor of NC State, and on the university's Founders Day, an annual day of remembrance honoring university founders and deceased members of the North Carolina State University community. It is also illuminated to celebrate certain academic and athletic achievements, including induction of N.C. State faculty into a National Academy, the awarding of a Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, National Medal or Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering, or the awarding of a North Carolina Award or a Governor’s Award for Excellence, among other distinctions.
