From December, 1939, to May, 1940, she works for Lady Caroline as a servant; she desires to observe children evacuated from London during World War II.Willis, Blackout, p. 43. She sees far more of these children and their predicaments than she bargained for, especially some undisciplined trouble-makers, sister and brother street urchins Binnie and Alf Hodbin. Merope, referred to mostly in both books as Eileen, excels at her assignment, even when she comes to dislike it and to try desperately to escape to her "drop," which is located in the woods outside the manor grounds. The children love her, and when Alf comes down with measles, and then infects the dozens of other children, the house is quarantined; Eileen proves an excellent and tireless nurse, against her own wishes.

On her way to work, Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) is delayed by what she perceives to be the failure of other subway goers to observe basic social norms, which she generalizes to a breakdown of New York society. While she is complaining to Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) about this in a call, his cell phone is stolen at knifepoint in a construction tunnel. Jack responds to his mugging by hiding in his office for days and organizing the wealthy to protect themselves from the apparently angry lower classes. Shortly, Liz comes down with a cold and dons an elderly woman costume from one of The Girlie Show with Tracy Jordan sketches, but discovers to her amazement that the getup causes people to avoid her on the subway, fearing that she is sick and potentially mentally ill.

The series follows the adventures of Finn (voiced by Jeremy Shada), a human boy, and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake (voiced by John DiMaggio), a dog with magical powers to change shape and grow and shrink at will. In this episode, Finn, Jake, and Princess Bubblegum (voiced by Hynden Walch) disguise themselves as wizards and sneak into Wizard City after Starchy (voiced by Tom Kenny) comes down with a cold and needs a magical cure. However, Bubblegum keeps insisting to everyone that magic is just a mystical way of explaining the world, and that scientism is the superior epistemological view. The three, along with Abracadaniel (voiced by Steve Little) are eventually arrested for impersonating wizards, but manage to break out of prison with the help of a "cold" spell that literally produces cold weather.

Set in Spain, the novel tells the story of Dr. Harvey Leith, an English physician who is wrongfully blamed for the deaths of three patients and leaves his country in disgrace, ultimately finding redemption when thrust into the middle of a yellow fever epidemic in the Canary Islands. Lady Mary Fielding, who is to join her husband in the Canaries, and Dr. Leith, who plans to drown his sorrows in drink, engage in a romance on the steamship en route to their destination. She eventually comes down with the deadly fever after following the doctor into the heart of the fever area as he tends to the sick. Dr. Leith returns to England a hero, and on his arrival, learns that Lady Fielding, who was saved by the doctor's newly discovered serum, has left her husband and is coming to join him.

At their little Christmas party some of the town dignitaries are present, and everyone enjoys her ladylike ways. On top of it all, Bedelia is several months pregnant, turning Charlie into a proud father-to-be. Among the guests at the Christmas party are his cousin Abbie Hoffman, a divorcee from New York; her friend Ellen Walker, a young journalist employed at the local paper who is still in love with Charlie although she has been rejected by him in favour of Bedelia; and Ben Chaney, a young painter who has recently arrived from nowhere and rented a cottage in the woods for the winter and who is increasingly regarded by Charlie as an intruder into his well-established circle of friends and acquaintances. Then Charlie suddenly comes down with stomachache, and old Doctor Meyers, the Horsts' family physician, diagnoses a severe case of food poisoning.

Instead, he chooses to try to show affection to them equally, without singling any of them out. While the girls feel sorry for Otaru and appreciate his attempt to be considerate, they begin to feel that they are emotionally mature enough to handle the situation, whoever he might choose. Upon reaching Xian, Otaru comes down with a serious fever called the “sleeping fever,” which the marionettes are told can only be cured by a rare moss that grows in the mountains. In the process of looking for the moss, the girls become separated and are attacked by mysterious robot assailants, which turn out to be working for Doctor Hess and his Xian associate. This time, instead of Lorelei, it is the marionettes’ brains they attempt to scan, but a security measure within the maiden circuits kicks in and creates feedback within Doctor Hess’ machine, causing a tremendous explosion.
