Gironcoli's thingness — the cold, metallic paint and aggregation of precisely defined, recombinant forms (some of which are cut out and collaged into the composition, augmenting their tactility) — is a thoroughgoing contradiction of Bacon's painterly expressionism (though both oeuvres can be seen as suffused with Sartre's Nausea).

Schapiro's hard-edge abstractions from this period are mature, confident works with great graphic impact, and it must be emphasized that the later works for which she's best known, where paint is replaced by or interacts with collaged textiles, are still highly geometric in their underlying structure; it is the inclusion of textile, with its gendered connotations, that marks them as a break from her formalist past.

Closer inspection, however, revealed that the fluid effect of the skirt was achieved through the application of thousands of minute feathers to one side of each pleat, letting the other remain sheer; a tank dress wafted silver caviar-beaded cilia but was as light as tissue paper; and a sleeveless lace gown was given depth by darker chiaroscuro sections collaged from three different kinds of mink.

Jalabala Self's lovely, shrieky, rackety mixings of paint and collaged fabrics are the only works in this show that do not feel weighed down by the burden of the various kinds of anxiety that seem to buzz about here so frenziedly, ranging from the fact of being a painter at all, to the horrible uncertainties surrounding the very idea of the human condition in a nasty, predatory world such as this one.

Structured around audio interviews with 45 artists, writers, and historians including Simone Forti, Alan Nakagawa, Norman Klein, Lynell George, and Harry Gamboa Jr., these stories range from the displacement of the residents of Chavez Ravine to make way for Dodger Stadium, to the replacement of native plants with citrus groves and fields for cattle grazing, to the Second Great Migration of African Americans to urban centers like Los Angeles after World War II. As with much of his work, Pescador uses everyday materials, found objects, and personal photographs to tell stories, juxtaposing them to present a subjective, collaged vision of history.
