Nicholas Colas, co founder of DataTrek Research, said in May that he's advising people not to buy bitcoin in the short term.
"Facebook is the poster child for the recent Tech stock decline," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, in a note.
"It takes a long time to dig yourself out of a $2850 billion hole," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.

DataTrek's Colas wasn't as bullish, putting his odds of bitcoin ETF approval this year at 10% in the same "ETF Edge" interview.

"Put another way, it has taken all of 2019 to see investors replace ... the capital they withdrew in Q4 2018," Colas said.
"When it comes to 'platform' companies, venture capital has done a generally terrible job building these businesses into viable companies," Colas wrote.
The gains should hold since they reflect the Senate passage of the tax bill, said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
"I suspect we'll see the chance of a December rate increase decline today," said Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at brokerage Convergex.
"The current rout in global equities is the market's way of telling the Federal Reserve they are on the wrong course," Colas said.
"It essentially measures market stress by comparing the daily returns of the largest defensive sector (Staples) versus the riskiest group (Tech)," Colas said.
"The issue with bitcoin is the price is driven 100 percent by market psychology," DataTrek Research co-founder Nick Colas told NBC News.
"To understand the upside case, you have to look at not the average estimates, but at the highest estimates" among analysts, Colas said.
Colas compared the situation with going to the ATM and finding out there is no cash and customers must go into the branch.
Colas also said tech is still "the only secular growth story around" as companies use their free cash flow to buy back stock.
DataTrek's Colas is less bullish on software, and said he doesn't see it as necessarily "safer" than tech companies that deal with hardware.
"The market may face enough risk and uncertainty for unusual, but not unprecedented moves to the downside," Colas wrote in a note Monday.
Despite similar pressure on the Fed, Colas isn't optimistic it will take the same steps as long as cash distribution is still profitable.

Bitcoin futures adds some legitimacy to the cryptocurrency, but there is a downside, noted Wall Street analyst Nick Colas told CNBC on Friday.
"Investors this week will look to see progress between the House and Senate's joint bill," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
The league's annual report examines the costs that typically comprise household budgets of older Americans and compares their price change with annual COLAs.
"This is one of the easier trades you put on around the holidays," says Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek, an investment newsletter.
Trump's plan would start benefiting Bouygues' road building unit Colas in 2000 with a stronger effect seen in 2227 and 2000, he said.
Colas, which makes 37 percent of Bouygues' revenue, had 2015 turnover of 12 billion euros ($12.5 billion), of which half came from France.
The rise in bond yields is "certainly beginning to concern the markets," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder at DataTrek Research in New York.

Rising spreads of speculative-grade corporate debt compared to government bonds of the same duration are another cause for Fed concern, Colas said.
"It's the equivalent of hitting a panic button — for any central bank, in any cycle," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
"The broad rubric of 'Environment, Social and Governance' investing will only grow more dominant, at least until the next market downturn," Colas said.
Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, likes the strategy of buying market laggards, but he has two reservations about using options in particular.
"Staples still need to outperform by 3 more percentage points versus Tech before any shift to defensive stocks signals unusual risk aversion," Colas said.

"Investors would assume the Fed had knowledge of some impending crisis about which they are unaware," says Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
According to DataTrek co-founder Nick Colas, a key relationship between stocks and bonds has broken down, and it could greatly hurt nest eggs.

Enterprise software companies still need companies willing to spend money — which could be threatened by waning business confidence thanks to tariff uncertainty, Colas said.

The stingy COLAs of the past two years are rare, and now they have set the table for an equally unusual situation for 29.
This year's effect was particularly overblown given the magnitude of the fourth-quarter's sell-off, according to Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
Going forward, the market will have a tougher time sustaining the gains without the helping hand of the January effect, Colas and others said.
Last quarter, smaller-package production grew about 10 percent in volume, while no-calorie colas saw accelerated growth in the second half of 2016.
"When I started writing these notes almost a decade ago, I never imagined how successful this effort would become," Colas said in his finale.
"The big picture concern is that wage growth will pick up and lead to more inflation," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder at DataTrek Research.
This week's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey indicated a record high in what Colas calls his "take this job and shove it" indicator.
"Investors are showing real caution about the pace of economic growth for the US next year," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
"Crypto currencies do not yet have as robust a regulatory framework around them as stocks, bond, currencies or other traditional asset classes," Colas said.
Market watchers should expect more volatility through the rest of 2018, especially in August and October when the market tends to peak, Colas said.
"We'll go toe-to-toe and increase our spending in colas, in particular, but we're going to remain very responsible on pricing," Nooyi said.
"People are gaming this out kind of through the month of June and trying to figure out what goes in and where," Colas said.
"That's really helped ... European financials," which have rallied nearly 10% since the start of September and given U.S. financial stocks a boost, Colas said.

But Colas said these ETFs don't have an outsized yield compared to the S&P 500, so the rate issue isn't necessarily hurting them.
The previous high of the last two years was much lower, at 240 percent, in mid-December 2017, Colas said in a Thursday note.
"That was Powell's most powerful sentence in the entire press conference," Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in his daily market note.
Colas also cited a September 2017 Bloomberg article noting that retail investors account for 80 percent of the trading volume on the Shanghai exchange.
"Markets continue to ignore rising trade tensions, essentially hanging their hat on a 'Trump Tariff Put,'" said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
To be sure, Colas cautioned that a sudden spike in rates likely would halt growth as would a recession beyond the "garden variety" nature.
According to DataTrek Research co-founder Nick Colas, a vast number of investors erroneously believe that if the stock market rallies, so will bitcoin.
In a research note on Tuesday, Colas, a millennial himself, urges the Fed to understand the lowflation experience of the young members of the workforce.

In deciding when to retire, "public employees relied on the legislative promise that COLAs would protect their pensions from the ravages of inflation," Albin wrote.
"Hedging instruments are not being used as aggressively as you would think," said Nick Colas, chief market strategist at the ConvergEx Group in New York.
Any continued turbulence between the U.S. and China could be mediated by the Federal Reserve by lowering interest rates, suggested DataTrek co-founder Nick Colas.

Along with the wild price swings, Colas sees bitcoin losing more market share to competitors, and "at least four crashes" of 40 percent or more.
John Larson have introduced legislation that would keep Social Security solvent for 75 years while protecting Cost of Living Adjustments (COLAs) and modestly boosting benefits.
"The Dow will always be relevant because it is the oldest measure of the stock market and the number most retail investors know," Colas said.

Investors trying to capitalize on the stock market's sharp decline can turn to the financial crisis for some pointers, DataTrek Research's Nicholas Colas said Tuesday.
"The funds that were invested in these [bonds] had a pretty good year last year through September," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
Yet Colas noted that only a handful of super-sized tech companies — such as Amazon and Apple — have been instrumental in pushing the group higher.
Anita and other members of the Gunn family, who had been invited to observe the photo sessions, enjoyed the Coca-Colas that Rockwell passed around.
But it remains below the three-month average of 184,000 and the six-month average of 189,000, Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, notes.
Colas released a statement saying the memo didn't fully capture his views but did not respond to the specific claim that Verma hired a lawyer.
Colas said there would possibly be some chatter tomorrow about the effect of rebuilding on Q3/Q4 GDP, but said that would probably be small.
For bitcoin to stage another breakout, Colas says it would take a major announcement from a retailer such as Amazon about using it for payment.
"Regardless of what you call it, technology's disruptive influence on society and 'passive' investing is unlikely to slow," Colas wrote in a recent research note.
"It's very much a case where you have to hold interest in new bitcoin owners to get bitcoin to go [back] up," Colas said Tuesday.
"As a long time cyclicals analyst, big earnings numbers scare us because they are hard to reproduce for long (let alone grow further)," Colas wrote.
Rick Nolan (D-Minn.), which would tie Social Security COLAs to a different inflation indicator, the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly or CPI-E.
And in the last five years, money made from deferred Wall Street bonuses that flowed into the Hamptons market was a huge factor, Mr. Colas said.
"What we've learned over the past two weeks is just how overweight investors were in technology," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of Datatrek Research, New York.

"The upshot of all this is simple: the VIX can (and should) rise in the current macro environment, even if equities continue to rise," Colas said.
"No one really trusts the rally, the positive sentiment or the low volatility," Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at brokerage firm Convergex, said in an email.
"To keep COLAs as a rigid right provides public servants with an advantage that surpasses what most taxpayers can earn on a parallel basis," he said.
"That gives the market some pause about valuation and future earnings growth, and creates the volatility that we've seen and should continue to see," Colas said.
And that was really unhealthy because it meant there was no value in diversification," Convergex chief market strategist Nicholas Colas said Monday on CNBC's "Trading Nation.
According to Colas, prime among these are the reach for yield amid falling bond rates, the commodity comeback, and new-found weakness in the U.S. dollar.
"Still, the marriage of a low-yield investment environment and a low-growth but stable domestic economic environment seems tailor-made for real estate," Colas wrote.
The BCI is part of a band of "off-the-grid-indicators" that Nick Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, uses to take the economy's temperature.
"Watch out for the 'old' financials, since so many notable portfolio managers have no REIT exposure right now," cautioned Nick Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex.
What's happening: The S&P 500 hasn't moved more than 1% in either direction in more than 5 weeks, according to Datatrek co-founder Nicholas Colas.
Average monthly inflows have fallen from $30 billion to closer to $10 billion — a rate Nick Colas from DataTrek Research said will be the new norm.
However, Nick Colas of Convergex said a much more fitting approach is to "buy the crater," on days when the falls by 5 percent or more.
Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, said there are some similarities between now and August 11.73, the last time this occurred, that are worth noting.
Colas said the January ETF data shows an almost "dollar-for-dollar swap" out of U.S. stocks (–$10.3 billion) and into U.S. fixed income (+$11.7 billion).
Staying on the job reduces the number of years of Medicare premium payments, and creates opportunities to boost Social Security income - and COLAs - through delayed claiming.
This and other legislation also would improve the formula for calculating cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) to more accurately reflect the impact of inflation on seniors.
Controllers, LEOs, and firefighters are subject to mandatory retirement, so eliminating COLAs affects them more than other federal retirees as well, because their retirement begins earlier.
Colas said on Wednesday it had won two contracts of total value of 63 million euros ($73 million) for construction of Line B on Angers Tramway.
It would have raised the retirement age to 21625, adopted a stingier formula for calculating COLAs (the Chained CPI), and slashed benefits for spouses and children.
Colas sees the inclination to use credit to get in on the moves of a volatile asset as "a cautious note" about where sentiment is running.
Johnson's group is among those that advocate for a different index — the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly — to be used to determine Social Security COLAs.
"If interest rates are in fact permanently higher, then organic earnings growth (driven by revenues) must rise or valuations will fall," DataTrek's Nicholas Colas wrote recently.

Verma told Price he was "creating a hostile work environment," according to a memo detailing the exit interview of Verma's former chief of staff, Brian Colas.
" Colas, in an interview with Axios, took issue with details included in the memo, saying, "It does not portray my full experience of working at CMS.
A source familiar said Flick conducted the interview, and told Colas that giving one would protect him in the future should any hostile workplace claims arise.
"It's extremely influential in the New York, London, and global hedge fund community," Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group, a brokerage firm, told CNN.
"It only feels abnormal because investors and market pundits anchor their expectations on the recent sleepwalking past," said Nicholas Colas, the co-founder of DataTrek Research.
"When you add leverage to any financial asset that's risen quickly, you're going to get unintended consequences when it comes back down to earth," Colas said.
"Markets are signaling that both the US and China have blundered into a minefield," Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, wrote in a note to clients.
In the latest quarter, smaller package production grew nearly 10 percent in volume, while no-calorie colas saw accelerated growth in the second half of the year.
Alternatively, Convergex Group's chief market strategist, Nick Colas, recommends selling large-cap consumer staples in order to mitigate implications of a stronger dollar on one's stock holdings.
"If you go by the one-drop rule, like you have in the United States, Cuba is like 90 percent black," Mr. Colas said with a laugh.
"Markets are clearly spooked about the state of the US economy and worried that Friday's jobs report will disappoint," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, supported that call, saying health care sector volatility could double and still be within the normal range for this period.
Nicholas Colas, co-founder of Datatrek Research in New York, said there was a "reset" on how much exposure to technology shares investors are willing to bear.
Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research who has been tracking the $100 currency boom for about a decade, said he was expecting it to slow slightly.
Colas said the Federal Reserve and Treasury are not incentivized to scale back production as long as they profit off of printing bills, then selling them offshore.
"Small-caps generally pay more in terms of U.S. corporate taxes," said Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, a global brokerage company based in New York.
Bonds working and stocks falling, " Colas said, though he added that a big difference is "a dovish Fed back in 2003 and a theoretically hawkish one now.
Finally, Colas also believes that as long as consumer stocks continue to outperform, it would be an indication that the market still has momentum to move up.
While this might be the natural place to look for opportunities, there isn't a whole lot in the lagging bunch that strikes Colas as a good buy.
"If the Federal Reserve looked at Google Trends they might not be so inclined to cut rates next week," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
Other Democratic bills would link cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) to a more generous inflation index specially geared to the elderly known as the CPI-E Rep.
Growth in new wallets was roughly 297 percent in both April and May, and first-quarter compounded monthly wallet growth was 24 percent this year, Colas said.
"SenseTime is the perfect case study in the difference between Chinese and Western technological development," wrote Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, in a recent report.
"It takes a lot to get Americans out of the office, and the Google Trends data shows they are gearing up for summer vacation season," Colas said.
"Markets are fully convinced we are in the last stages of an economic cycle," Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, wrote in a note to clients.
"The market has known there's a political circus in D.C. for the entire time of the Trump presidency," Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, told CNN.
"Bottom line: bitcoin can rally to $2000,0353 and still be reasonably priced, or plummet to $2035,211 and also be correctly valued," Colas said in his daily note.
"Colas' revenue in the United States could increase by some 4-5 percent each year over the next five years if the Obama plan materializes," he said.
DataTrek Research co-founder Nicholas Colas predicts it's on the verge of dangerously weakening due to tariff risks — a situation that could ultimately push stocks much lower.

Colas compared buying Lyft today with owning stock in a railroad company in the 1880s, when they were losing money from building thousands of miles of rail.

Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said the market will "want to see real progress" from the upcoming U.S.-China trade talks after the disappointing data.

Even after the run, Colas believes silver is set to outperform gold again in 2017, since it is still trading at a discount to gold versus historical comparisons.
"Every new administration has its hiccups and false starts so I think everyone is giving Trump a pass, but at some point the honeymoon is over," Colas said.
Retired prosecutor Charles Ouslander and others sued when the reforms froze COLAs at 2011 levels, saying they had as much right to that benefit as their base pensions.
"I think everyone knows the Dow is Boeing, given the outsize weighting of Boeing in the Dow," said Wall Street veteran Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
Losses of 298 million euros at Colas were partly offset quarter by profits of 91 million euros at Bouygues Telecom and profits of 63 million euros at TF1.
"With US equity volatility looking to rise this week, markets will inevitably back into an ever-stronger view that Fed policy will have to shift," Colas wrote Monday.
"Sometimes the official data is fine, but we think it never hurts to triangulate against other signposts we see on the road," Colas said in a note Friday.
Financial advisors have said that they aren't counting on Social Security COLAs as a retirement income boost, especially since 2016 was a year with no increase for retirees.
"Any real regulation on buybacks, either through labor conditions or tax code, is a negative for valuations and stock prices," Colas said in a recent note to clients.
Bouygues' Colas construction arm also announced on Thursday the acquisition of Miller & McAsphalt, a Canadian construction company with annual sales of around 1.3 billion Canadian dollars ($1 billion).
"This is still primarily a tech-led sell-off and what we've learned over the past two weeks is just how overweight investors were in technology," Colas said.
TECH TRIPS UP: "Any final flush for U.S. equity markets has to pull this group much lower and very quickly," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
"There are three reliable signs of a market bottom, where things get so bad it is safe to step in," Convergex chief market strategist Nicholas Colas wrote Friday.
Stocks recovered on Friday from their biggest selloff of the year, and market watcher Nick Colas has a suggestion for investors who may be anxious about another pullback.

If founders decide to sell around the lock-up date ending, shares flood the market, which DataTrek's Nick Colas said can be an added drag on stock prices.

"In the end, the resurrection of this group will have to come from one place, and one place alone: all those clever people who run the companies," Colas said.
Based on the historical correlation of the two, either crude oil is overvalued or energy stocks are a screaming buy here, according to Convergex chief market strategist Nicholas Colas.
Stock prices "are driven by exactly two things: corporate profits and interest rates," Nick Colas, the cofounder of DataTrek Research and a longtime Wall Street analyst, told BuzzFeed News.
In recent decades, some centrist Democrats joined Republicans in entertaining the idea of 'reforming' Social Security by raising the retirement age or reducing annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs).
With markets setting records last week, Nick Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, is concerned about what the price of silver could mean for markets in the long term.
"The bottom line is that, like a fire hose, a high-pressure economy is hard to control," Nick Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, said in a client note.
Coca-Cola got to trademark its curvy bottle, so that other companies couldn't put lesser colas in similarly shaped bottles and fool people into thinking they were buying Coke.
Mixed drinks to be wary of, according to CSPI, include Olive Garden's frozen margarita, at 340 calories — about the same as two and a half Budweisers or Coca-Colas.
"Stock buybacks are deeply cyclical in nature, so the fact that their size has finally drawn DC's attention is a worrying sign of a corporate profit top," Colas wrote.
A volatility measure for large U.S. tech stocks has jumped, signaling increased worries about a key part of the market, according to Nicholas Colas, chief investment strategist at Convergex.
"Americans with a college degree are basically at full employment, but most Americans do not have those credentials and their participation rates are lower than the former," Colas wrote.
Or at least not losing," Colas wrote in his note to clients published Wednesday, likening the state of global equity markets to, more or less, "one very large party.
While weekly initial claims data and the monthly jobs report shows employment trends after layoffs start, online searches for "unemployment" could be an even earlier indicator, according to Colas.
"The comparisons between the 2017 back half comps (excellent) and 2018-to-date (poor) are stark and explain essentially all of bitcoin's fall from grace this year," Colas said.
Google searches for the term "vacation" rose 10 percent in April on a year-over-year basis, said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, using Google Trends data.
According to Colas, investors who are looking for a cheaper way to play them by targeting micro- and small-cap stocks tied to the mania could get hit hard.
"That's an important market observation, because investors concerned about their personal health are more likely to have bearish assessments of its macro effects," wrote DataTrek co-founder Nicholas Colas.
Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, has pointed out that oil shocks have killed more US economic expansions over the past 40 years than any other single cause.
"While the coronavirus has captured the market's attention over the last week Fed policy will return to the fore [Wednesday] and it will be an awkward transition," Colas said.
"From this point on, we just have to look for the beginnings of good news that will re-accelerate wallet growth to make the thing go higher," Colas said.
"When Hamptons real estate, which has such a limited supply when compared to Manhattan, saw all the liquidity from money made from deferred bonuses, prices went higher," Mr. Colas said.
One potential explanation for the shift — which Colas says he "chalk[s] up entirely to Donald Trump's victory" — is that the president's potential economic policies could create winners and losers.
"Consumers want choice in diet colas, so we're refreshing our U.S. lineup to provide three options that meet differing needs and taste preferences," Gina Anderson, a Pepsi spokeswoman, told CNBC.
"Therefore, we don't think US equities have seen their near term lows," Colas wrote in his daily note after Thursday's trading, in which the market saw another sharp down day.
"The upshot is we're going to be looking for a lot more volatility in balanced portfolios, and investors will feel a lot more volatility than they have historically," Colas said.
"Fourth quarter results reveal stronger than expected profitability and stronger-than-expected top-line performances at Colas and Construction," wrote brokerage Jefferies, which kept a "buy" rating on Bouygues shares.
However, Colas granted that "it is definitely a worrisome number" – particularly because it is just one among many that suggest moderate, if not severe, overvaluation in American large-cap stocks.
"As far as the ability of active managers to outperform, that has obviously not been the story for the past 10 years," said Nick Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex.

The recent flat COLAs meant that nonprotected Medicare enrollees shouldered most of the burden of rising Part B premiums; the premiums for this group jumped sharply in 22000 and 27.

Isabella Boylston and Jeffrey Cirio, making their debuts as Lise and Colas, at once proved themselves outstanding interpreters of these roles; the way they continually locked eyes was especially affecting.
Colas, the company that built the road, said in 2016 that the solar panels were covered with resin containing sheets of silicon to make them capable of withstanding all traffic.

Investors have maintained interest so far in 2020, with emerging market funds pulling in about $1.5 billion at more than twice 2019's run rate, according to DataTrek, Colas' firm.
During the SARS epidemic, for example, the country accounted for 2415 percent of the world's economic activity — a stake it has since quadrupled, DataTrek Research co-founder Nicholas Colas notes.
Sugar in moderation But here's where it gets tricky: Beverages with more concentrated sugars, such as fruit juices or colas, are not necessarily as hydrating as their lower-sugar cousins.
Nicholas Colas, the chief market strategist for the Manhattan brokerage firm Convergex, said most Wall Street professionals don't take much vacation, so when they do, they try to make it count.
"From what I sense at work and in the Hamptons, security concerns are trumping foreign exchange rates," added Mr. Colas, who has had a home in Southampton for about 22.5 years.
In addition to stocks and bonds, investors might want to stash some money in a few unconventional assets this year, according to Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at brokerage company Convergex.
"Oil shocks have killed more US economic expansions over the last 40 years than any other single cause," Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, wrote in a note to clients.
Investors looking to capitalize on the expected flows will have a number of considerations to weigh, Nick Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, said in a recent note on the topic.
Colas, the company that installed the road, hopes to reduce the cost of the panels going forward and it has around 100 solar panel road projects in progress around the world.
Tariffs along with Federal Reserve interest rate policy are "fulcrum issues for those lofty 2020 Street earnings expectations," Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in a note this week.
"If you historically can outperform by picking the right sectors, this (correlation) tells you, you have to be more dramatically underweight or overweight," said Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex.
DataTrek Research's Nicholas Colas believes the upcoming round of quarterly numbers will be the most contentious in about three years, and he's worried they could spark the next stock market downturn.
"Every big tech earnings report [is] potentially going to be a market-moving event because these are the crowded trades and crowded trades have a way of unwinding quickly," Colas said.
"A kind of churning news cycle about Russia, and the FBI, and Trump...begins to take confidence out of the market that we will get tax reform in 2018," Colas said.
Notably, President Trump's budget for fiscal year 2018 proposed eliminating the cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) to federal pensions entirely for recent federal retirees, and reducing them for older federal retirees.
These panels can then generate energy to power up streets, supermarkets or households without encroaching on farmland, and Colas is hoping to have some 50 testing sites by mid-2018 worldwide.
Colas believes President Donald Trump's tariff threats have already harmed corporate America by leaving companies no choice but to re-assess their business plans whether a trade war happens or not.
DataTrek Research co-founder Nicholas Colas said that examining employment trends in critical states like Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio show that "there is little risk of an imminent US recession."

"Historically, the men can just be really, really great at their sport," Lindsay Kagawa Colas, a sports agent at Wasserman who represents many of the W.N.B.A.'s biggest names, told me.
For Colas, the "bottom line is if you think there's a chance of an Elizabeth Warren or a Bernie Sanders presidency, you've got to buy that group today," he said Monday.
But longer term, "it seems there has been enough flooding to damage thousands of light vehicles that will need replacing," said Nick Colas, an independent analyst based in New York City.
"We are chalking up the S&P 500's YTD gain of 3.6% primarily to the cessation of tax loss selling in the New Year," Colas wrote in a note to clients.
Based on recent market history, Convergex chief market strategist Nick Colas believes that if the CBOE Volatility Index (frequently known as the VIX) rises high enough, the Fed won't raise interest rates.
It's expected to be a "sloppy" earnings season but there is one sector that is the best positioned as the first-quarter reporting gets underway, analyst Nick Colas told CNBC on Tuesday.
What's happening: As Nicholas Colas, co-founder of research firm DataTrek, points out, many of this year's best performing stocks are "simply the names that got really clobbered" in December's sell-off.
"All year, there's been this nonstop search for the thing that would bring this cycle to an end," Nick Colas, the co-founder of the market insight firm Datatrek Research, told me.
" Colas added: "If that is a bit of an indictment regarding the Federal Reserve's desire to raise short rates and (presumably) see the rest of the yield curve follow, so be it.
In a note released Thursday morning, Colas mentioned that if investors are wondering if it's safe to buy another dip in the market, they only need to look for three key trends.
Even with political turmoil out of D.C., there's no question in Colas' mind that until that sudden 2 percent drop happens, buying every dip in the market would be an ideal strategy.
They're all flat on the year or up on the year, with only a small minority down, " Convergex's chief market strategist, Nicholas Colas, said in a Thursday interview on CNBC's "Trading Nation.
This is small think because big companies are not run from a home, the Amazons and Coca-Colas of the world have headquarters where the company has employees that come to work.
Nick Colas, formerly the chief market analyst at brokerage Convergex, is launching a newsletter this week that will deliver much the same innovative thinking for which his Morning Market Briefing was known.
"From an investment perspective the largest challenge around the Wuhan coronavirus is the lack of historical comparisons that might help sensibly frame the risks," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research.
As lock-ups expired, that shortage went away, and public investors went from being able to buy 5% of the company in public markets to buying 30%, 40% or 50%, Colas said.
"It's early days for Q2 earnings season, but so far this is looking to be a very good reporting cycle," Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in a note Monday.
The interview with Colas was conducted by Heather Flick, who at the time was an official in HHS' Office of the General Counsel, according to three people with knowledge of the matter.
"This is not what we expected to see, given the magnitude of the beats so far for Q2," Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in the firm's market note Monday.
"This options-based measure of the cost of 'disaster insurance' on US stocks seems to indicate trouble ahead," Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek research, said in a recent note to clients.
Colas said lower global interest rates are largely responsible for the significantly higher valuation for the S&P 500 as it has returned to record highs after a strong six-month run.
Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, a market insight and research firm in New York, told me that people appear to be buying Bitcoin with their credit cards — a risky proposition.
Mr. Colas estimated that the median asking price for a Hamptons rental in 2015 was about $45,000 for the full season, unchanged from 13, but up by about $10,000 from five years ago.

Nick Colas, chief market strategist at brokerage Convergex, believes a "volatility reset" may be the case in the days ahead as relatively constant numbers tied to economic growth begin moving in surprising ways.
"The most bullish case here is that the tariff issue will be settled in Q1 2019, and a meaningful resolution should be enough to trigger a first half rally for stocks," Colas added.
"You have disruption, but it's not yet creating the kind of growth that we had either in wages or in the economy with prior technologies like in the 1920s and '30s," Colas added.
During his conversation with CNBC's Mike Santoli, Colas also discusses value versus growth strategies, dividend stocks and how to invest when easy money from central banks seems to be driving all the action.

After all, if Super Troopers taught us anything, it's that there are no shortage of fast-food workers who find hocking loogies in cops' burgers and messing with their liter colas really entertaining.
"The upshot of all this is that the US economy isn't really accelerating; it may, if items like the pickup truck data or the Gallup spending information, be slowing a little," Colas wrote.
Over the course of several years, both companies have shifted their strategy, focusing on selling low-calorie versions of their colas and buying healthier beverage brands, as consumers move away from sugary sodas.
Colas, who has had the ribbon in his mouth like the horse's bit, stops, turns around and stands, suddenly locked in Lise's eyes; and the dynamics and tempo change, melting in lyrical tenderness.
While there have been some concerns about trading futures on an unregulated asset such as bitcoin, Colas pointed out that there is already state regulation of the wallets that sell the digital currency.
Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at the brokerage firm Convergex, noted last week that were three previous periods of a Vix below 20023: December 22002, January 22004, and December 21994 through January 2007.
Setting aside recent stock market volatility, this action turned out to be a windfall for those employees, because shares of bank stocks have been strong since the end of the recession, Mr. Colas said.
Quarry and gravel companies have been eyeing equipment from shuttered U.S. coal mines, said Jon Hager, who manages heavy equipment for Colas SA. The French company engineers and builds roads and other transportation infrastructure.
Still, what Colas' work shows is that in order to make the case for buying stocks based on the most commonly cited correlation metric, one has to believe that earnings will truly shoot skyward.
"The most important thing in the bull-run is what you see, and I see more than others do," said Colas, who this year celebrates his 20th year of taking part in the event.
"There is a lot of chatter that a Sanders nomination would roil markets, but there's another way to consider that possibility," Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in his daily market note.
"It would be very helpful to have oil bottom here in order to have stocks break out to the upside," Nick Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, said on CNBC's "Trading Nation " on Friday.
Given the way the market is performing, Colas said he thinks energy is still a good place to be as he sees oil in the process of bottoming out at around its current levels.

"The beefiest part of Saturday evening's meeting between Presidents Trump and Xi may well have been the local sirloin served for dinner," Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, wrote to clients on Monday.
"As much as every investor knows market timing is very difficult, that's the sort of case study that resonates just now," Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in his daily note Wednesday.
The central bank "has somewhat of a reputation as the matador that dispatches bull markets with the sword of policy mistakes," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, in a note to clients.
The term "coupon" could be an early recession indicator since consumers often start to look for products with discounts as economic uncertainty increases, even before they defer, or stop buying things altogether, Colas said.
Nick Colas, the co-founder of DataTrek Research who also was the first Wall Street analyst to cover bitcoin, figures the digital currency could slosh in a range between $6,500 and $22,000 next year.

"VCs are so flush with cash that they desperately need companies like Tesla — large, scalable, and levered to mega-trends like autonomous driving and clean energy — as much as Tesla needs them," Colas said.
"This is certainly not the first, nor will it be the last, such hack attack on cryptocurrencies and, all things considered, I think they're taking it fairly well in terms of price," Colas added.
The 2.0 percent boost in COLAs for 2018 amounts to only $27 a month for the average retiree — barely enough for a prescription co-pay, a tank of gas, or a bag of groceries.
"The idea is that beaten up small cap stocks tend to trade higher in January as tax loss selling abates and more normal buy-sell balances reassert themselves," Colas said in a note to investors.
And while he sees no reason for the index to spike, Colas believes that if the VIX hits between 20 and 35, that could act as a "trigger" for the Fed to change its mind.
In an exclusive strategy session only for Pro subscribers, Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex Group, revealed some of the lesser-known metrics he uses to successfully value individual stocks and the overall market.
"The next few quarters are setting up as a cyclical investor's dream, but like all dreams, they require some interpretation," Nick Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, said in his daily note to clients Tuesday.
"You have a balance of, say, $100, you go to a merchant, you scan your smartphone for a $10 purchase, the Libras are taken out of your account and held by the merchant," says Colas.
"US marijuana legalization is a rare example of disruption creating jobs rather than destroying them," Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in a note Thursday that highlighted some of the cannabis jobs data.
"The upshot is that bitcoin is a tech-enabled (and therefore global) phenomenon, which is a critical feature of its price advance," Colas, formerly chief market strategist at Convergex Group LLC, wrote in a note.
On Sunday, he was enjoying bacon cheeseburgers and ice-cold Coca-Colas with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes, who is embroiled in a sexual harassment scandal.
That, I think, is what a lot of market observers, particularly in the futures market, are worried about and rightly so," Colas, the co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in an interview with "Closing Bell.
" NICHOLAS COLAS, CO-FOUNDER, DATATREK RESEARCH, NEW YORK: "I think this is still primarily a tech-led selloff and what we've learned over the past two weeks is just how overweight investors were in technology.
"While it might be tempting to look at high-volatility stocks for a sign investor confidence has returned, it feels like a tall ask to expect those names to rally convincingly just now," Colas wrote.
"Purchasing a new vehicle is entirely discretionary; they can always fix the old one and keep it running another year if they are worried about business conditions," Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research said.
"When that happens, you get the classic risk-off-everything sell-off," said Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, who has been on top of ETF trends since the industry was in its infancy.
Even with the country's equity market down by 373 percent in dollar terms since the start of 2018, that alone has little impact on diversified equity investors, Colas wrote in a research note on Monday.
Colas said in a recent research note that the EM index doubled in two years after its 2009 lows, and from the start of 2016 to January 2018, it rose by just over 203 percent.
"The math here isn't especially daunting: 7% price appreciation to see that level, and layering on a 2% yield gets you to a 453% total return without reinvestment," Colas said in his daily market note.
"We need to strengthen and expand Social Security with COLAs that reflect the real expenses seniors face," said Richard Fiesta, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, which is supported by major labor unions.
"Right now [the Google search data] is telling me there's not really that next leg up in bitcoin because there's not that interest that leads to wallet growth that leads to price appreciation," Colas said.
DataTrek Research co-founder Nicholas Colas also pointed to a very different geopolitical backdrop during the SARS epidemic, since it coincided with the runup to the war in Iraq and fears of an oil shortage.
It proposes to: (1) eliminate the Social Security annuity supplement; (2) increase federal employee Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS) retirement contributions 1 percent per year until the contributions reach 7.25 percent; (3) reduce Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) by 85033 percent each year and eliminate COLAs for FERS for all current and future retirees; and (4) modify the CSRS and FERS annuity calculations to be based on an employee's high-5 years rather than the current high-3 year calculation.
Nick Colas, chief market strategist at brokerage firm Convergex Group LLC, has a message for the Fed ahead of the gathering of monetary policy makers: millennials hold the key to fulfilling your dual inflation/employment mandate.
Conglomerate Bouygues posted better-than-expected first quarter results and kept its full-year targets, as the strong performance of its telecoms arm offset weakness at the Colas road building business and led to reduced losses.
The VIX has closed below 10 just nine times since 1990 and each of those instances was followed by lackluster 12-month price returns on the index, according to Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex.
"If it works over the first quarter and draws some assets, you're going to see 20 competitors inside of six moths," said Nick Colas, head of DataTrek Research, which distributes a newsletter that follows market trends.
"First quarter earnings season is almost here, and the results/guidance should be very good," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, noting Wall Street is expecting first-quarter earnings to grow by 17 percent.
"China is in a better position to address the current crisis relative to SARS, both because its population is now more affluent as well as the country's improvements to its national health care system," Colas added.
"The rip in assets last year was ... about bringing some products to market that were cheaper than the ones before, so, that really helped, but I think everything's going to be ESG going forward," Colas said.
Nick Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in the same "ETF Edge" interview that technology stocks broadly "should continue to work" this year as growth-focused ETFs regain popularity after underperforming value funds in 2019.
Colas backed up his assertion by noting that the Shanghai Composite trades for less than half its October 2007 peak, yet China's economy in the 11 years since then has more than tripled to $653 trillion.
Without the release of new economic projections, there will be fewer questions surrounding things like the dot plot, so expect "harder/squishier [topics], for good or for bad," says Nicholas Colas, co-founder of research firm DataTrek.
The current quarter "is going to be more like 13 to 14 percent, and next year is going to be more like 5 to 6 percent even though analysts still expect 8 to 9 percent," Colas said.
Given bitcoin's volatility, every time investors buy the currency at new highs, "you kind of want to hold your nose," Colas said, given its volatile nature and all the hills and valleys that come along with it.
"The bottom line here is pretty simple if not altogether positive: markets are signaling that both the US and China have blundered into a minefield," Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in a note Tuesday.
"It's a sloppy predictor because at some point after yield curve inversion you could get a recession that could be one year, two year, three years," said Nicholas Colas, co-founder at DataTrek Research in New York.
Similarly, Nick Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, told "Power Lunch" on Friday that while the above strategy "makes a lot of sense," there are other long-term market trends that are also playing into the market.
In fact, Convergex strategist Nicholas Colas said Friday on "Trading Nation" that infrastructure and cybersecurity stocks are primed to benefit no matter who is seen as the winner, since both candidates favor increased spending in both areas.
Colas says recent headwinds like the falling dollar, turbulence in the global economy and less money flowing into energy ETFs in the second quarter than the first may point to a more difficult rest of the year.
"The stock investor should take a lesson from the gold investor and really believe in the asset a little more strongly and buy when it's down, because that tends to be where you make money," Colas said.
Both women have come to the professional ranks ready not only to succeed on the court but to maximize their brand off it, complete with superstar representation—they share an agent in Lindsay Kagawa Colas at Wasserman.
However, Colas also emphasized Thursday political drama could still derail the rally in the long run, with investors beginning to fret whether President Donald Trump will have the political capital necessary to press ahead with his agenda.
Colas' point is important on two levels: The "most hated" moniker has stuck with the market since the early part of this decade and has been both a source of aggravation and support for the aging bull.

"Any investment style that relies on volatility should now be roaring back to life, whether you're an options trader, a momentum driven hedge fund, you need volatility to make money and you have it now," said Colas.
"While the Fed may want to portray its 2020 rate policy as stable, markets are signaling that their bias should be to further easing," Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, said in his daily note Wednesday.
"[Emerging market ETFs] tend to be the ones that will work in a late-stage part of the cycle when all the developed economies are chugging ahead and EM kind of comes along with it," Colas said.
