A traditional wooden slate clapperboard. Traditional clapperboards consisted of a wooden slate with a hinged filmstick attached to its top. Modern clapperboards generally use a pair of wooden sticks atop either a whiteboard or a translucent acrylic glass slate (the latter being easily legible via the light coming through it from the scene about to be shot). The filmsticks traditionally have diagonally interleaved lines of black and white to ensure a clear visual of the clap in most lighting conditions.

The release of Aretha Franklin's 1972 concert film Amazing Grace was delayed for 46 years due to young Academy Award nominated director Sydney Pollack forgetting to use clapperboards, making the film impossible to edit until the advent of non-linear editing.

Since Pollack had not used clapperboards, it turned out to be impossible to sync the audio with the video in post-production. The project was halted, and the raw footage placed in a vault at Warner Bros; it went unseen through the 1990s.

In recent years sticks with calibrated color stripes have become available. Digislates are simply clapperboards with inbuilt electronic boxes displaying SMPTE time code. The timecode displayed on the clapperboard will have been jam synced with the internal clock of the camera so it's easy for an editor to pull the timecode metadata from the video file and sound clip and synchronise them together. However, electronic timecode can drift throughout a shoot day so the Filmsticks on the clapperboard still need to be closed together in order to ensure there's a way of manually synchronising the footage and audio if matching the digital timecode fails.

Each stage contains small clusters of magic whose value varies by color; if every cluster is collected within a stage, the stage's appearance in the hub world returns to normal. Collecting all magic in the game results in the game's true ending where the crate is sealed. There are also gems which can be collected in bonus levels, of which one exists in each stage and can be unlocked by acquiring four keys from Thing One and Thing Two; collecting all of these gems unlocks the bonus stage. Finally, there are clapperboards hidden throughout each stage that, when collected, unlock a clip from the movie for viewing in the menu.

To promote the film, the film's marketers continued the trend established during Skyfalls production of releasing still images of clapperboards and video blogs on Eon's official social media accounts. On 13 March 2015, several members of the cast and crew, including Craig, Whishaw, Wilson and Mendes, as well as previous James Bond actor, Sir Roger Moore, appeared in a sketch written by David Walliams and the Dawson Brothers for Comic Relief's Red Nose Day on BBC One. In the sketch, they film a behind-the- scenes documentary on the filming of Spectre.
