The saro, or green sandalwood, (also known locally as mandravasarotra), Cinnamosma fragrans, is native to Madagascar and is exported from there to India to be burned in ceremonies. It is not related to the true sandalwoods, which are in the family Santalaceae. Most species of Canellaceae produce bark that is similar in odor and flavor to cinnamon, but they are not related to true cinnamons, which are in the family Lauraceae. The white cinnamon, Canella winterana, a native of Florida and the Antilles, is used as a condiment, with tonic properties.

Céré became assistant to Pierre Poivre who had in 1766 been appointed Administrator of the islands of France and Bourbon administering trade the country. When Poivre left the island in 1772 Céré was named Director of the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden in 1775. Plantations of peppers, cloves, cinnamons, and nutmeg were established on the Isle de France and Bourbon, the plants then being sent to the West Indies and Cayenne. In the garden Céré acclimatised plants and trees from America, India and China as well as European fruits and vegetables.

In 1971 the Housemans continued their efforts for the Cinnamons to become an official breed, and the family took the rabbits to the 1971 convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Again there were some obstacles: the family hit a severe storm and had to abandon their trailer, and a dog broke into their rabbitry, killing three of their best does. However, the rabbits managed to pass the convention with good comments.

On returning to Scotland he began writing songs, with his growing interest in creating and performing music proving a distraction in his attempts to hold down jobs in various industries over several years.
