The murderer, Cheik Diaw is an illegal immigrant from Senegal who arrived in Italy in 2015. According to the prosecutor, DNA analysis of a cigarette butt and a condom found by police investigators in Olsen's bathroom led to Diaw's arrest. Diaw was convicted of murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison. Attorneys acting for the perpetrator appealed the verdict, but the original 30-year prison sentence was upheld in January 2018.

James Miller, a vagrant, was squatting at 9 Grantham Road, Sparkbrook, an inner-city area in Birmingham, England, in August 1980 when he accidentally set fire to the mattress on which he was sleeping with a cigarette butt. On September 15, 2019, Palm Beach County officials arrested Robert Hayes, 37, at his West Palm Beach home for the March 7, 2016, killing of Rachel Bey. DNA found on Bey matched DNA recovered from Gunther and Green, two of the Daytona Beach Killer's victims and ballistics tests connect Hayes to the killing of Patton.. Lori Napolitano, chief of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's forensics department, reported that DNA collected from Daytona Beach Killer victims was run through a genetic database used by people trying to find long- lost relatives and a link to Hayes was established. Hayes was put under surveillance and police collected a used cigarette butt surreptitiously that linked him to the killings. Additional testing after his arrest confirmed the link.

The Camp Lena tract remained in Hoskins's family until 1913, when it was sold. DNA testing conducted by the Innocence Project in 2009 found that semen from one victim's rape kit didn't match Glaze, but instead matched another Minnesota man, a convicted rapist. Additional testing done in 2014 on a cigarette butt found near the body of a second victim came back as a match to the same man. François Couture, a reviewer for Allmusic, said that "Mystery Roach" contains multiple meanings, all of which have a connection to lyrical subject matter in Zappa's discography. These include the freshwater fish, as the Mothers of Invention live album Fillmore East - June 1971 contained a song referring to the mud shark, a cannabis cigarette butt, which causes the character Jeff to go crazy within the context of the film's storyline, and a combed roll hairstyle, which connects the song lyrically to "Jelly Roll Gumdrop", a song from Cruising with Ruben & the Jets. The version featured on the album is different from the version featured in the film, as it is missing small electric guitar solos by Zappa, and was not scripted as part of the film in its electric arrangement, having originally been written in three separate, unused acoustic blues-oriented arrangements.
