Since the English Reformation, the Daily Office in Anglican churches has principally been the two daily services of Morning Prayer (sometimes called Mattins or Matins) and Evening Prayer (usually called Evensong, especially when celebrated chorally). These services are generally celebrated according to set forms contained in the various local editions of the Book of Common Prayer. The Daily Offices may be led either by clergy or lay people. In many Anglican provinces, clergy are required to pray the two main services daily.

Hewitt was classically trained from childhood as a pianist and tenor singer. He won music scholarships to Westminster Abbey Choir, Uppingham School, the National Youth Music Theatre, St Johns College, Cambridge and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Before university he had already toured chorally worldwide, and on graduation in 2000 continued on to perform regularly in concerts, global tours and CD recordings for such classical groups as John Eliot Gardiner's Monteverdi Choir, Robert King's The King's Consort, The John Rutter Singers, Synergy, Opera Rara, the London Voices and Metro Voices. These performances covered every style, from contemporary premieres, to session choirs, and baroque, classical and avant-garde works.

From 2002 to 2007 the Main Choir did not have a permanent conductor and invited guest conductors to work with the choir for the residential courses. These included Joyce Ellis, Jill Henderson-Wild, Cathy Roberts, Gilian Dibden and Mark Griffiths. Since 2008, NOEL's Artistic Director John Pryce-Jones has been the permanent conductor of the Main Choir with his wife and fellow artistic director Alison Pryce-Jones having conducted the Training Choir since the choir's inception. The Training Choir sings in SA and SSA format and is intended for primarily younger and less chorally experienced choir members to develop their sight reading, aural and general choral skills.

He has assisted and prepared orchestras for many of the world's leading conductors including Wolfgang Sawallisch, Kurt Masur, Christoph Eschenbach, Sir André Previn, Sir Simon Rattle, Charles Dutoit, Yuri Temirkanov, David Zinman, Leonard Slatkin, Sir Roger Norrington, Raphael Frühbeck de Burgos and Mstislav Rostropovich. He served as Assistant Conductor to Sir André Previn for the Curtis Symphony Orchestra's 1999 European Tour with Anne-Sophie Mutter and served as cover conductor for Kurt Masur with the New York Philharmonic. Chorally, he has prepared ensembles for Wolfgang Sawallisch, Kurt Masur, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, James Levine, Sir Andrew Davis, Nicholas McGegan, Sir Simon Rattle, Yuri Temirkanov, Jeffrey Tate, Raphael Frühbeck de Burgos and Neeme Järvi.
