All of this, the investigators maintained, created a culture at Choate that "made it difficult to report" abuse.

Sadly, he is deceased, and this blot upon his memory will outlast his distinguished teaching career at Choate.

Such was the case with Mr. Lyman, who is one of 12 men named in the Choate report.

"Brandon was having some problems mentally, and Luis was there to try to help him out," said Choate.

The agency later wrote its own report, noting that Choate had waited more than two months before alerting the student's parents.

Like Cheyenne Montgomery, I was an unusual student at Choate, having come from much lesser means than many of my classmates.
|
|
"I don't know what occurred, but apparently, there was something that sparked Brandon off to become irritable to Luis," Choate added.
|
|
The teacher was ultimately fired, but continued working at other schools until he recently resigned after being contacted by the Choate investigator.
|
|
"They have certainly gotten the attention of corporate America," said Gregory Keating, a partner at Choate, Hall, and Stewart, which represents management.
|
|
His parents, though nominally Jewish, sent Paul to Choate, the exclusive Connecticut prep school, where he was required to attend Christian chapel.
|
|
The Choate report, written by investigators at the law firm Covington & Burling, names 12 former faculty members alleged to have abused students.
|
|
"He groomed them," she said of young women at Choate with whom Mr. Lyman is said to have engaged in sexual relationships.
|
|
Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article misstated the number of Choate headmasters who remain trustees for life.
|
|
But as made clear in that law firm's report, Choate continues to shelter the leaders who bear ultimate responsibility for this legacy.
|
|
Then last month, she learned what Mr. Lyman is accused of having done at Choate, and her own experience clicked into place.
|
|
Put together for the school's board of trustees, the report claims at least 12 former teachers sexually assaulted students at Choate Rosemary Hall.
|
|
"We remain committed to addressing these important matters frankly and with transparency," Lorraine S. Connelly, a spokeswoman for Choate, said in a statement.
|
|
Choate is the latest in a string of prestigious private academies in the U.S. to face accusations of sexual abuse by faculty members.
|
|
Choate told local news station WMUR 9 at the time that Garcia had been trying to help Brandon Castiglione when he was killed.
|
|
The bishop, Stanley Choate, 75, was shot in the chest and hospitalized in serious condition, the state attorney general's office said in a statement.
|
|
Mr. Choate and a friend were also at the beach watching ships pass along the shore when they heard the sound of tires spinning.
|
|
Mr. Lyman taught at Andover before going to Choate, which in April released its report about sexual misconduct, written by investigators at Covington & Burling.
|
|
But now two women have come forward to raise troubling questions about his behavior before he arrived at Choate, when he was at Andover.
|
|
" The message went on, "We are moving quickly to investigate this allegation and determine the facts around the circumstances of his departure to Choate.
|
|
These seductive works focus on the moment when words become form in order "to see what new arrangements do to us," as Choate notes.
|
|
"If you are not afraid of hard work and you show up every day, the sky is the limit," a recruiter, Tim Choate, told them.
|
|
This grim accounting follows a similar pattern at schools like the Emma Willard School and Choate Rosemary Hall, which have released detailed reports of wrongdoing.
|
|
The revelations at Choate are just the latest in several admissions of sexual abuse of students at some of the nation's most prestigious prep schools.
|
|
"This is very, very different," said Roderick MacLeish, a lawyer who has represented many victims of sexual abuse, including one who was molested at Choate.
|
|
Shortly after she graduated, Choate learned that the two had an inappropriate relationship, though the report says administrators were unaware that the relationship was sexual.
|
|
Choate was shot in the upper chest and is currently in serious condition, according to a press release from the New Hampshire Attorney General's office.
|
|
"Why didn't you nominate Rufus Choate?" began a joke told about the old men who'd been rounded up to serve as delegates at a Convention.
|
|
Equifax counsel Joan Lukey of Choate Hall didn't respond to my phone and email messages, and the company declined comment to Reuters on Judge Salisbury's decision.
|
|
To be flashy would have been to expose yourself as different, and different was the very last thing any of the Choate students wanted to be.
|
|
Choate had better luck filling up early Wednesday, and she and her family are headed to Asheville, North Carolina, to wait for the storm to pass.
|
|
Ms. Boser and Mr. Choate met in April 2016 at Harbor Cove Beach in Ventura when the old work truck Ms. Boser was driving got stuck.

At Choate, where he taught after Beaver, an investigation found that he had abused two students, having sex with then, and giving one of them herpes.

"As long as no one was talking about it, then it was growing and breeding," said Cheryl Hart, whose daughter is a day student at Choate.
|

Schools do not get much more elite — or wealthy — than Choate, whose famous alumni include President John F. Kennedy, the actor Michael Douglas and Ivanka Trump.
|
|
By not reporting abuse allegations to authorities, Choate made it easier for those who had abused students to move to other schools without any red flags.
|
|
The Andover report provided less detail than documents from Choate and other schools, and it gave limited information of how administrators responded when abuses had surfaced.
|
|
Topey Schwarzenbach graduated from Choate in 1965, and not long after, he was abused by one of his former teachers at a summer camp, he said.
|
|
But this week's story about a report on sexual abuse and misconduct by teachers at Choate Rosemary Hall, a boarding school in Connecticut, illustrated an exception.

"Same way you have parents who wanted their kids to go to Choate, you had kids whose parents wanted them to go to the seminary," he said.

This is in spite of the fact that the mental-health professions, as well as the news — witness the recent accounts of abuse at Choate Rosemary Hall, the Connecticut boarding school, or at the Horace Mann School in the Bronx, that transpired decades ago — repeatedly tell us that it can take many agonizing years, often signified by anxiety, depression, addiction and other destabilizing conditions, for victims to understand what had happened to them and come forward.
