The poem "The Chimney Sweeper" is set against the dark background of child labour that was prominent in England in the late 18th and 19th centuries. At the age of four and five, boys were sold to clean chimneys, due to their small size. These children were oppressed and had a diminutive existence that was socially accepted at the time.

In 'The Chimney Sweeper' of Innocence, Blake can be interpreted to criticise the view of the Church that through work and hardship, reward in the next life would be attained; this results in an acceptance of exploitation observed in the closing lines 'if all do their duty they need not fear harm.' Blake uses this poem to highlight the dangers of an innocent, naive view, demonstrating how this allows the societal abuse of child labour. In Experience, 'The Chimney Sweeper' further explores this flawed perception of child labour in a corrupt society. The poem shows how the Church's teachings of suffering and hardship in this life in order to attain heaven are damaging, and 'make up a heaven' of the child's suffering, justifying it as holy.

Robert Blincoe was born around 1792. By 1796 he was an orphan and living in the St. Pancras workhouse in London. His parents are unknown. At the age of six he was sent to work as a chimney boy, an assistant of a chimney sweeper, but his master soon returned him to the workhouse.

Children in this field of work were often unfed and poorly clothed. In most cases, these children died from either falling through the chimneys or from lung damage and other horrible diseases from breathing in the soot. In the earlier poem, a young chimney sweeper recounts a dream by one of his fellows, in which an angel rescues the boys from coffins and takes them to a sunny meadow; in the later poem, an apparently adult speaker encounters a child chimney sweeper abandoned in the snow while his parents are at church or possibly even suffered death where church is referring to being with God. The poem from Songs of Experience was set to music in 1965 by Benjamin Britten as part of his song cycle Songs and Proverbs of William Blake.

John Colfer, a chimney sweeper in 1850, Wexford, Ireland. A chimney sweep is a person who clears ash and soot from chimneys. The chimney uses the pressure difference caused by a hot column of gas to create a draught and draw air over the hot coals or wood enabling continued combustion. Chimneys may be straight or contain many changes of direction.

The site consists of a patchwork of fields, intersected by overgrown hedgerows, narrow strips of woodland and small streams. There are a number of magnificent old oaks, and breeding birds include sparrowhawk, stock dove, bullfinch, willow warbler and chaffinch. There are also a number of common butterflies and the uncommon chimney sweeper moth. The Shirebourne brook runs north-south through the fields.

Florianek, the first chimney sweeper among the Wroclaw dwarves. The legend says that he makes everyone happy. Wrocław’s dwarfs () are small figurines (20-30 cm) that first appeared in the streets of Wrocław, Poland, in 2005. Since then, their numbers have been continually growing, and today they are considered a tourist attraction: those who would like to combine sight-seeing in Wrocław with "Hunting for dwarfs" are offered special brochures with a map and mobile application software for smartphones.

Herold headed for Wilhelmshaven and picked up his old profession as a chimney sweeper. He was arrested by the Royal Navy on 23 May 1945 for the theft of a loaf of bread. Following an investigation and the questioning of witnesses, Herold was identified as a wanted war criminal. On 1 February 1946, Herold and his men were forced by the British occupying forces to dig up the remains of the inmates murdered at Aschendorfermoor camp.

Blake's Songs of Innocence is an illuminated anthology first printed in 1789. Each poem contains an etched illustration by Blake, combining his poetry with intricate drawings. Songs of Innocence is a lyric collection that depicts an idyllic world before adulthood, where the spirit of children is still religiously pure. In some of the poems in this work, such as "The Chimney Sweeper" and "The Little Black Boy", Blake uses irony and rhetoric to portray the corruption of innocence in youth.

George Atkinson (1764 – 20 June 1834), also known as George Atkins, was an English convict sent to Australia aboard a ship of the First Fleet. He was a chimney sweeper. Convicted for the theft of clothing and a book from a London boarding-house in 1783, he was sentenced to seven years' transportation and sent to the Australian penal colony of New South Wales where he was put to work on a Norfolk Island farm. On expiry of his sentence Atkinson married and took up careers in farming, law enforcement and as a mariner.

Dianne Barwick claimed that Loiusa's mother, Mary--herself a "half-caste" Aborigine--and grandmother, Marjorie, had been kidnapped in 1833 from Point Nepean by sealers before Mary later married John Strugnell, a former chimney sweeper who had been transported to Australia in 1818 at the age of 17. Louisa married John Briggs in Tasmania in 1844, and later moved to Mount Cole where John worked on the Goldfields region of Victoria as a shepherd whilst Louisa worked as a midwife. Before Ellen was born, Alick Campbell had found it increasingly hard to get adequate work, so returned to Ganawarra Station.

During the late-17th century and early-18th century, the population of Buda was destroyed by plague epidemics. In 1694 Péter Pál Franczin, an Italian-born chimney sweeper, a modest citizen living in the Buda Castle District vowed that if he and his family escaped, he would travel to northern Italy (Valle Vigezzo) to the shrine of Mary, to Re, Piedmont for the Blessed Virgin Mary's image there. He returned from the pilgrimage with a copy of the grace image to Buda and erected a wooden chapel in his Buda vineyard. He placed the grace in what was then called the Blood Chapel.

Chimney sweeper In 1788, the Chimney Sweepers Act 1788: An Act for the Better Regulation of Chimney Sweepers and their Apprentices was passed, to limit a sweeper to six apprentices, at least 8 years old, but lacked enforcement. It introduced the Apprenticeship Cap badge. The Act had been partially inspired by the interest in climbing boys shown by Jonas Hanway, and his two publications The State of Chimney Sweepers' Young Apprentices (1773) and later Sentimental History of Chimney Sweeps in London and Westminster (1785). He asserted that while Parliament was exercised with the abolition of slavery in the new world it was ignoring the slavery imposed on climbing boys.

Kent then studied for the bar and began practicing in Boston in 1739, when there were only seven lawyers in the city, among whom he was at first "the Chimney sweeper of the Bar, into whose black dock entered every dirty action.". He lived on the north side of King's Street (present-day State Street, Boston) by the north end of the First Town-House, Boston.p. 47 He handled divorces, and represented numerous slaves in their attempts to gain their freedom, including the case of a slave Pompey suing his master Benjamin Faneuil. Kent was the first lawyer in the United States to win a case to free a slave Jenny Slew, in 1766.
