The EP's title track reached the British top ten singles, the last self-written song (by Jones) and the band's last R'n'B workout to do so. The run climaxed with a second UK No. 1 single, "Pretty Flamingo", produced by John Burgess. The group had managed an initial jazz/rhythm-and-blues fusion, and then had taken chart music in their stride—but could not hope to cope with Paul Jones' projected solo career as singer and actor, and with Mike Vickers' orchestral and instrumental ambitions. Violent Silences theme seems to be a hit out at controlling record studios who place profit before the interests of signed artists. From the album's cover art - a gagged Rico next to a large and prominent bar code - to the lyrical content of the song "Manufractured", which openly criticises the perceived hypocrisy and purely fiscal motivations of record company executives. The album also touches on the related subjects of manufactured chart music (in "Dawn Raid") and on advertising in general (in "Recommended Dose"). As well as addressing themes that appear to be close to the artist's heart, Violent Silences includes an electro-rock cover of the Talking Heads classic Psycho Killer and a collaboration with electronic-music legend Gary Numan, entitled "Crazier".

Beginning in March 1964, Radio Caroline was the first in what became an eventual fleet of 10 offshore pirate radio stations that began to ring the British coastline, mostly along the South East coast. By 1966 millions were tuning into these commercial operations, and the BBC was rapidly losing its radio listening audience. This was largely due to the fact that even though they were fully aware of the problem, the BBC still only played a few hours of Pop music from record a week, as opposed to the pirates who broadcast chart music and new releases all day. The British government reacted by passing the Marine Offences Act, which all but wiped out all of the stations by midnight on 14 August 1967, by banning any British citizen from working for a pirate station.

Morissette held the record for longest run by a woman atop the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, which was later surpassed by Lorde's "Royals" in 2013. The song was only a modest hit in Morissette's native Canada at first, initially reaching number 20 on the RPM Top Singles chart and number 21 on the RPM Rock/Alternative chart concurrently with its peak chart performance in the United States; it then began to decline on the charts before having a late rally in the fall to reach a new peak chart position of number six in the week of October 16, the week after the album's second single "Hand in My Pocket" debuted on the chart. Music journalists have attributed the song's uneven chart performance to resistance from Canadian radio programmers,"Alanis a hit everywhere except on hometown radio". " Gavin Haynes of NME wrote, "MIA takes the basic template of right-now chart music and subverts it by forcing it to work triple time". He continued, "Beats are constantly morphing, and every track chucks handfuls of sonic debris at you", Likewise, Alexis Petridis of The Guardian noted, "Like the woman who made it, Matangi is hugely inventive and a bit exhausting: if it's hard to take in anything other than small doses, you can't help but be glad it exists". However, Petridis also acknowledged the abrasiveness of the album's sonic scope: "More characteristic is , an unyielding, punishing rhythmic assault on which the only semblance of a tune comes from a distorted electronic horn section". He then goes on to admit that "in a way, that's the highest compliment you can pay her: a decade into her career, MIA still doesn't sound like anyone else.
GWR Radio began splitting frequencies as required by the British Government - which declared its desire to end simulcasting on both FM and AM. In November 1988 GWR Radio launched Brunel Radio, a golden oldies service (now part of the Gold) network whilst GWR FM launched an opt-out service for West Wiltshire as a more localised service, this was however dropped a few weeks later, citing "poor reception". A fill-in relay for Marlborough was opened on 14 October 1988 on 96.5 MHz FM. After the lifting on sanctions restricting the time spent playing music (so-called 'needle time') in 1988, GWR FM became more and more music-led, playing Top 40 chart music during the daytime, and specialist music (big band music, rock, rap etc.) was over time eliminated. The local element of the station especially its news coverage had progressively become briefer and reduced in length, then moved onto Brunel Classic Gold, before being dropped altogether.

The structure of the MTV Networks is different in Europe from in the US and so the role that MTV Two plays is somewhat different. The various nation MTV channels remain the flagship channels bringing a wide variety of popular music and many different show formats (including documentaries, reality TV, charts, text shows, and countdowns) however digital satellite in the UK has allowed MTV to operate subsidiary channels with their own specialist areas. So while in the US MTV2 was a varied, slightly alternative channel in the past, in Europe MTV Two was dedicated exclusively to alternative rock and indie, with the occasional alternative hip hop song; while other music output carried on MTV Base, MTV Dance, and MTV Hits covering urban music (hip hop, rap, R&B; and garage), electronic dance music, and chart music respectively. MTV Rocks initially began as M2 in October 1998: the channel had an interactive feel to it.

A concerted effort was made to pull WSOK out of the trap that befell many white-owned soul outlets. While not the musical director, Taylor helped steer the format at WSOK away from its prior heavy focus on chart music: according to him, "Most black stations are owned by white owners. They think they know what is best for us, and they're chart- oriented." Tucker expanded the station's album collection from 20 to 4,000 selections; in addition, the station began offering Mutual Black Network news and increased its commitment to local news and public affairs programming. The improvements at WSOK, the 15th black-owned radio station in the United States, had raised it to number one in the local ratings within nine months of Black Communications Group taking over and led to a tenfold increase in the number of advertisers on the station. After more than a decade of ownership, Black Communications Group sold the station to Bay Communications of Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1984. The $375,000 sale made it a sister to WAEV, creating the city's only AM-FM duopoly; Tucker remained on as a consultant.
