Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, it has been suggested that the 2020-21 edition may either be cancelled or held with modifications. Premier of NSW Gladys Berejiklian stated to 2GB on 24 September that she was in discussions with local officials regarding Sydney New Year's Eve, commenting in regards to last year that Australians "felt relieved that we were still able to have a feeling of normalcy during what was otherwise a very difficult time".

In 2010 the charity won "Britain's Most Admired Charity" at the Third Sector awards. In 2017 the charity won "Charity of the Year" at both the Charity Times awards and Third Sector Awards, and was selected for the Telegraph's Christmas Charity Appeal. In 2019 the charity won the Food and Drink Federation's Campaign of the Year award for the Feed People First campaign, which helped to unlock £15m of DEFRA funding to 'level the playing field' for the food industry of the cost to redistribute food to vulnerable people, vs sending it to landfill or anaerobic digestion. It also won the Charity Times 2019 award for "Corporate National Partnership with a Retailer" and the Business Charity Awards 2019 "Consortium" award with the Trussell Trust and Asda for the Fight Hunger Create Change project.

Weatherfield is a fictional town based on Salford which is the setting for the British ITV soap opera Coronation Street since its inception in 1960. Much of Weatherfield has been seen by viewers throughout the years, though the primary focus from the viewer's perspective is the eponymous Coronation Street, a cobbled street where many of the programme's characters live. Weatherfield areas are often shot on location around Salford and the neighbouring large city of Manchester, as its filmings studios, the Granada Studios complex on Quay Street in Manchester city centre (which closed 2013) and its replacement set MediaCityUK in Salford Quays (opened 2014), only house the outdoor sets of Coronation Street and its immediate surrounding streets. As part of 2010 Children In Need charity appeal, Weatherfield became twinned with Walford in a special programme uniting the two soaps Coronation Street and EastEnders called East Street.

Each year since 1927, the BBC has broadcast a special Christmas Appeal in association with St Martin-in-the-Fields church in Trafalgar Square, London. This raises funds which are divided equally between The Connection at St Martin's, which supports vulnerable and homeless people in central London, and the Vicar's Relief Fund, which makes grants, averaging £200, to people anywhere in the UK who are at risk of homelessness or with experience of being homeless. The 2012 Appeal raised a record £1.9 million. In 2007-2008 the appeals raised £1,433,154.02 for 52 charities. Just over half of this, £725,000, was for the annual Christmas appeal, broadcast on 2 Dec 2007. Amounts raised for other charities in that year ranged from £1,366.00 (Jenni Murray appealing for BEAT (Eating Disorders Association) on 24 Feb 2008) to £53,988.00 (Krishnan Guru- Murthy appealing for Homeless International on 3 March 2007, one week later).

While performing in The Phantom of the Opera, Mead auditioned for the BBC series Any Dream Will Do, hoping to win a six-month contract playing Joseph in the 2007 West End revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. From 10,000 initial auditionees, Mead was selected as one of the final 12 potential 'Josephs' who performed live on TV every Saturday night to win the public's vote. Immediately after he won the final, a single featuring Mead, with fellow Any Dream Will Do finalists Lewis Bradley and Keith Jack, was released in aid of the BBC's annual Children In Need charity appeal. The single, featuring Any Dream Will Do (performed by Mead) and Close Every Door (performed by all three finalists) reached number 2 in the official UK singles chart. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat opened in the West End on 17 July 2007 to generally good reviews: "Lee Mead… turns out to be both talented and enthusiastic… what distinguishes him is an attractive singing voice and, coming from beneath hair that owes more to Uncle Esau than father Jacob, lots of affable charisma… last night’s audience seemed enchanted" wrote Benedict Nightingale in The Times.

She presented three series of the show between 2012 and 2014 when it came to an end after the ninth series on 9 March 2014.
