In Oklahoma politics, Nance was a close ally of Gov. George Nigh in his campaigns from 1958 to 1982. Also, Nance's son-in-law, Ben Langdon served as senior advisor to Governor Nigh. In 1975, Nance was subpoenaed as a character witness in the federal corruption trial of former Oklahoma Governor David Hall during which Nance testified that pretrial daily newspaper coverage and media reports of the investigation prevented the defendant from receiving an impartial trial by an unbiased jury.

At the time of his betrayal, Arnold was using the confiscated Robinson home as his headquarters, with Continental Army commander-in-chief Washington a temporary occupant. It is there André was brought after his capture. Following André's trial and sentencing British commanding general Sir Henry Clinton sent a delegation to Washington that included Robinson as a character witness for Andre, to plead for the Major's life. It is said Washington refused to see or be swayed by his old friend.

In 1992, the Nikæan Club founded a charitable trust, The Nikaean Ecumenical Trust, to finance study trips made by members of Christian Churches from overseas. The club suffered damage to its reputation in 1993, when its chairman Patrick Gilbert, head of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, received a suspended sentence for child abuse. Founding panther member Will 'Ilolahia was also arrested for helping organise the protests, and was facing 10 years in prison if convicted. Roche is an active member of the Cleveland branch of the Autonomous American Indian Movement (AAIM), a separate division of the American Indian Movement. Robert Roche has been a highly visible figure on the Cleveland scene for many decades, periodically using his role as a leader in the community to act as a character witness. He provided testimony in the clemency hearing for Billy Slagle, who was convicted of aggravated murder with death penalty specifications after, in 1987, he stabbed babysitter Mari Anne Pope to death while the children she was babysitting watched. In the appeal, Roche explained that Slagle, whose mother was Native American, visited the American Indian Education Center with his family as a child.

Einstein was a member of several civil rights groups, including the Princeton chapter of the NAACP. When the aged W. E. B. Du Bois was accused of being a Communist spy, Einstein volunteered as a character witness, and the case was dismissed shortly afterward. Einstein's friendship with activist Paul Robeson, with whom he served as co-chair of the American Crusade to End Lynching, lasted twenty years. In 1946, Einstein collaborated with Rabbi Israel Goldstein, Middlesex University heir C. Ruggles Smith, and activist attorney George Alpert on the Albert Einstein Foundation for Higher Learning, which was formed to create a Jewish-sponsored secular university, open to all students, on the grounds of the former Middlesex University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Having never given a confession, Ross proceeds to tell the crowd of the true events of what happened as his benefactor promised him his release; but then falls over dead, the victim of a poison dart. District Attorney Roger Phillips (Ricardo Cortez) conducts a search of the occupants of the room and together with his girlfriend crime reporter Geri Reynolds (Joan Woodbury) and his young receptionist Tommy George P. Roger searches everyone in the room for the murder weapon, then has everyone return to the same seats in which they sat before Ross's murder. Roger becomes suspicious of an elderly man named Lanning, Ross's character witness, because he has a cigarette holder which could be used as a dart blower.

That is, if the opponent impeached via bias, rehabilitation is limited to negating the claim of bias. If the opponent brought in a rebuttal witness who testified to the character of principal witness as that of a liar, rehabilitation is limited to a character witness who testifies principal witness is a truthful person. That is a different consideration from the ever-present right to cross-examine any witness, including character witnesses which in Trump's case include the likes of John Bolton. If the opponent shows that the witness made a prior inconsistent statement and implies that after that statement and prior to trial the witness was "gotten to" or otherwise developed a motive to lie in court, rehabilitation can be attempted by showing that the witness made a prior consistent statement (consistent with the testimony) before the alleged events that gave rise to the alleged motive to lie.

If true this would give Rickey overwhelming motive to kill Sandy and recover the tape. The defense argues that without the tape or Sandy's testimony the entire event rests on the words of a bookie who's cut a deal with the DA. The defense puts on witness after witness attesting to Rickey's character as a black role model who overcame poverty in the inner city to become one of the most famous men in the world. They claim Rickey displayed strong religious and family values, while Sandy gambled and owed money to organized crime. However, their biggest character witness, Rickey's wife Carla, ends up hurting them on cross- examination when she acknowledges Rickey beat her and that she had an affair with Sandy. Chris and Aaron were unaware of the affair and put their hope in Rickey’s testimony of innocence, asking Jimmy to prep him.

Eist testified as to Ray's blatant racism: not only did Ray refer to African-Americans with ethnic slurs, Eist said, but "he also told me that he tried to get into Africa at some stage — he said to kill more of them". Eist also reported that, while in British custody, Ray "seemed quite elated" — "brimming with confidence" — particularly as he believed he would receive payouts for television and media appearances. Then-chief crime reporter for the Daily Mail, Owen Summers, provided a character witness for Eist at the HSCA, in which he told the committee that he had known Eist for over 18 years and had "never been knowingly misled by Alec Eist and always found his information totally reliable". One of the House Committee members, Chris Dodd, however, said he was "extremely disturbed" that Eist had not come forward with his evidence regarding Ray when the HSCA re- opened its investigations in 1977.

Sentencing, in which he was expected to serve up to two years in jail, was originally scheduled for July 1, 2009 but subsequently postponed to September 21, 2009, after the judge had been presented with a petition organized in an international campaign conducted over the internet. In August 2009, in a preliminary hearing on sentencing the court heard several witnesses, such as Shulman and Galit Hasan-Rokem, testifying on Nawi's behalf. Aside from these academics, the former Deputy Attorney General of Israel, Yehudit Karp, speaking as a character witness and as a former head of a committee that had examined law and order issues in the West Bank, wrote that the situation there was strongly distorted in favour of the settlers, and that this justified the way Nawi, whom she called a modern- day Robin Hood, behaved in conditions she considered "surreal".

There were no witnesses in opposition to the reinstatement and Hottinger's eleven character witness included local attorneys and colleagues from the political world including DFL Minneapolis Mayor R.T.
