Historically, The New School has been associated with leftist politics, campus activism, civic engagement, and social change. It is a "Periclean University", or member Project Pericles, meaning that it teaches "education for social responsibility and participatory citizenship as an essential part of their educational programs, in the classroom, on the campus, and in the community". While pursuing her master's degree at Johns Hopkins, Gounder was inducted into the Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society in 2000. In 2004 when she graduated from University of Washington School of Medicine, she was awarded the James W. Haviland Award for "outstanding clinical competence and for unusual promise as a leader of medicine in the future". In 2010, she was awarded the W. Leight Thompson, MD Excellence in Research Award at Johns Hopkins. Also that year, she was the recipient of the Arthur M. During his time in the technology sector, Menezes was also volunteering at CodeDay (at the time called StudentRND), a not-for-profit headed by Edward Jiang which operated a 3,500 sq.ft. makerspace in Bellevue, Washington where he helped start the CodeDay event. After leaving Framebase in 2013, and frustrated at what he perceived as Silicon Valley's focus on problems which didn't serve most of the population, Menezes moved to Seattle, Washington and joined StudentRND full-time to lead the growth of CodeDay events. Menezes and Jiang's work in this period was profiled in the book Be a Changemaker: How to Start Something That Matters.

Learning at THINK Global School is centered around the school's internally developed Changemaker Curriculum, which educates students through a blend of place- and project-based learning. There are no formal classes at THINK Global School, instead students participate in one multidisciplinary teacher-led module each term that draws heavily from social, environmental, historical, and cultural themes and create several personal projects of their own. For the teacher-led modules, students are either partnered up or work in groups to replicate what employees experience in the workforce. Each teacher-led module and student-driven project comprises multiple learning targets, which are tied to psychologist Benjamin Bloom's theory of mastery learning.

CodeDay was founded in 2009 by Edward Jiang as Student Research and Development (which is still the organization's legal name), and was initially a makerspace for students and high school accelerator, helping to start several successful companies. The early days of the organization were profiled in the book, Be a Changemaker: How to Start Something That Matters. The original mission of CodeDay was to "create the next generation of technologists" through makerspaces, however CodeDay closed its makerspace in 2013, citing lack of attendance and high costs, and began focusing entirely on CodeDay. Around the same time, CodeDay adopted its current mission of "increasing Computer Science enrollment nationwide", as well as focusing on attracting diverse students.

Later that month, Can Man Dan was also voted Edmonton's "Best Philanthropist" in Vue Weekly's annual "Best of Edmonton" series, a local contest that is held ever year and where the winners are ultimately determined by online votes. In November 2018, Avenue Magazine awarded Dan with their prestigious "Top 40 Under 40" award for being a consummate changemaker and for his dedication to humanity. Shortly after receiving the "Top 40 Under 40" award, Johnstone announced that he would be hosting the "Can Man Dan city-wide food and toy drive" in support of various Edmonton charities and declared that "no child in his city will go without a gift to open or a hot meal to eat on Christmas day".

This initiative was fostered and developed by The100Hours, a charitable organisation based in the UK whose aim is to bring 'wise and compassionate living and leadership' into the centre of education; Cable is also a spokesperson and ambassador for The100Hours and in November 2014 was named an #iwill Ambassador for youth social action. In January 2015, along with his parents, educators Paul Vincent Cable and Agnesa Tothova, Cable co-founded a chain of 'changemaker' schools known as EnSo, aimed at children at the bottom of the economic pyramid in Sub-Saharan Africa and India. These schools have adopted in their curriculum a version of the methodology Cable has used in his social activism and social entrepreneurship. From 2016 to 2019, Cable worked with the Diana Award and Royal Foundation’s Cyberbullying Taskforce.
