In 1956, two civilian surveyors chanced on the wreck and noted its exact location, which otherwise remained unknown for the next 40 years. In 1770 he hired acrobats, tightrope walkers, jugglers and a clown to fill in the pauses between the equestrian demonstrations and thus chanced on the format which was later named a "circus". Performances developed significantly over the next fifty years, with large-scale theatrical battle reenactments becoming a significant feature. The traditional format, in which a ringmaster introduces a variety of choreographed acts set to music, developed in the latter part of the 19th century and remained the dominant format until the 1970s. As styles of performance have developed since the time of Astley, so too have the types of venues where these circuses have performed.

In the summer of 1948, director Carol Reed was preparing to shoot The Third Man in Vienna and was staying in the Hotel Sacher, along with many of the British element of the Allied Control Commission for Austria. Robert Baty, the young son of the Director of Education, C.W. Baty, was tasked with showing the director around the city. On the second day they stopped at a Heuriger and heard Karas playing the zither in the background. This is described in Karas' L.A. Times/Reuters obituary which states that:Anton Karas, 'Third Man'Theme Composer, Dies - LA Times "From Reuters", 1985-01-10 > Reed, desperately searching for a theme tune ... chanced on the tavern in > Vienna's Grinzing wine-growing district.

In the years before World War II, when the city's population had declined to a few hundred year-round residents, some downhill skiing enthusiasts who chanced on Aspen noticed that the mountains around the city had slopes that would make an ideal place for their hobby, then beginning to establish itself as a recreational activity. Before the war, some had cut trails and built a primitive ski lift from leftover mining equipment. This was put on hold when the United States became involved in World War II in 1941, but Aspen continued to attract interest as a winter-sports destination when members of the Tenth Mountain Division, the Army's "soldiers on skis", who trained at nearby Camp Hale, visited the city when on leave. After the war, many of the Tenth's veterans became involved in the development of skiing, and some returned to Aspen to do so.

Melos, long marked as a source of early objects but not systematically excavated until taken in hand by the British School at Athens in 1896, yielded at Phylakope remains of all the Aegean periods, except the Neolithic. A map of Cyprus in the later Bronze Age (such as is given by J. L. Myres and M. O. Richter in Catalogue of the Cyprus Museum) shows more than 25 settlements in and about the Mesaorea district alone, of which one, that at Enkomi, near the site of Salamis, has yielded the richest Aegean treasure in precious metal found outside Mycenae. E. Chantre in 1894 picked up lustreless ware, like that of Hissariik, in central Phtygia and at Pteria, and the English archaeological expeditions, sent subsequently into north-western Anatolia, have never failed to bring back ceramic specimens of Aegean appearance from the valleys of the Rhyndncus, Sangarius and Halys. In Egypt in 1887, Flinders Petrie found painted sherds of Cretan style at Kahun in the Fayum, and farther up the Nile, at Tell el- Amarna, chanced on bits of no fewer than 800 Aegean vases in 1889.
