The episodes function surprisingly well as a Halt and Catch Fire movie, one that draws the four main characters back together in a way that really earns having all of them in the same room together for the first time since late in season one.

Home to the excellent and unfortunately canceled Lodge 49 and the masterful Halt And Catch Fire, AMC is the best network for patient, beguiling TV. So when it came time for Halt and Catch Fire, AMC's soon-to-end series set in the world of the '90s tech boom, to kill off one of the characters who has been with it from day one, thank goodness the series realized that what's important isn't the death itself but everything that unspools afterward.

By recapturing those early days when it seemed as if computers might give us the world, instead of slowly seal us off into our own bubbles, Halt and Catch Fire invites viewers to reexamine our own relationship to technology and each other, and how often we try to let our online selves stand in for the people we really are.
But the most prescient, terrifying moment of Halt and Catch Fire comes not in an elegant speech about the dawn of the internet age, but in the suicide note left behind by a despondent coder, titled "You Are Not Safe": "Beware of false prophets who will sell you a fake future, of bad teachers and corrupt leaders and dirty corporations," it reads.
As the characters on Halt and Catch Fire send their little cartoon avatars wandering through a prototype of our current digital world, it's not difficult to imagine the show as an antithesis, of sorts, to the idea that we're all in it alone, that when it comes down to it, greatness is defined by what any one person makes of it.
Still, I miss the days of stronger standalone episodes, and "Yerba Buena" is both the most standalone episode of Halt and Catch Fire yet — for the most part, its conflicts arise and are resolved within the hour, though several will presumably carry forward in echoes — and an episode that reminds us that "standalone" doesn't have to be a dirty word.
Communities at risk could require fire-resistant building materials like concrete, stone, glass, and brick; prohibit buildings on steep slopes, where fires move faster than on flat land; enforce a minimum distance between homes, since dense housing serves as better fuel for flames; require homeowners to plant only certain types of vegetation that doesn't easily dry out and catch fire.

It's fitting, then, that the second and third seasons of Halt and Catch Fire have focused on the very early days of the internet, because through that choice, the series has found a way to revel not in the isolation that drove so many of the great dramas of the past decade but in the connection that is driving so many of them in this decade.
"Halt and Catch Fire," a phrase that refers to a computer problem that necessitates a reboot, is appropriate for a show that has gone through a number of permutations: It began as a series about the emergence of personal computing, pivoted into one about the genesis of online communities, and is now moving from Texas to Silicon Valley to focus on the development of internet commerce.

The closer the 2010s came to their end, the more it seemed as if the single most potent idea driving more and more dramas was human connection, and Halt and Catch Fire — about a group of tech pioneers in the '80s and '90s — had the power to transport viewers back to a world where computers could unite people rather than divide them, where the internet held promise and not destruction.
