In South Africa, it is legal to use lethal force in self-defence if in fear of one's life, and ownership of flamethrowers is unrestricted. The device was controversial in South Africa, with some (including the Automobile Association of South Africa [AA]) speculating that the device might cause more carjackers to simply murder drivers with gunfire as a precautionary measure before approaching the vehicle, a tactic which was already fairly common. In any case, the device was not banned (as is sometimes reported), but the high price tag limited its market and made it unprofitable.

The Blaster (also called the "BMW Flamethrower") was a 1998 invention by South African inventor Charl Fourie designed to provide a defence against carjackings. The invention came in response to the increasingly severe violent crime situation in South Africa, which in 1998 had already made the country (particularly Johannesburg) the per capita murder, assault, rape and carjacking capital of the world. The Blaster was a liquefied petroleum gas flamethrower installed along the sides of the vehicle under the doors. Should a group of carjackers suddenly attack the vehicle while it is stopped in traffic (the typical scenario), the occupant could flip a switch and direct 5 metre plumes of flame upward into the facial area of anyone trying to enter the vehicle through the doors or windows.

Ten was stabbed in the thigh on 19 July 2018 in Almaty by two carjackers who were attempting to steal his car mirrors, which were worth about U.S. dollars. After being stabbed, Ten lost about of blood and died from the severe blood loss at the Central Clinical Hospital in Almaty, three hours after being admitted. The Kazakhstan Minister of Culture and Sport paid tribute to Ten, saying "Denis Ten was an incredible figure skater, the legend of our sport, our pride." United States figure skaters Adam Rippon, Gracie Gold, Ashley Wagner, and Mirai Nagasu, who used to train with Ten, also paid tribute to him, along with several other international figure skaters including Patrick Chan, Tessa Virtue, Scott Moir, Alex Shibutani, Evgenia Medvedeva, Adelina Sotnikova, and many others.

Ex-con Otis Samuel Sr. or "O2" on account of his ability to vanish from a crime scene like oxygen, has done his time and is determined to stay out of trouble and never leave his young son, Otis, Jr. When O2 shows up late to pick Junior up from school, he swears that he will always come back for Junior. That promise is put to the test just moments later when O2's vintage 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS Lowrider convertible is stolen from him at gunpoint in the middle of a crowded Southland intersection with Junior in the back seat, kidnapping him in the process. O2 chases the car and gets into a nasty gun battle with the carjackers, but to no avail. O2 catches up with Coco, a woman who sells stolen suits for P Money. O2 knows she is the one who marked him for the carjacking, and he forces her to help him retrieve Junior.
