In 1676, a company known as Compagnie de Limonadiers sold lemonade in Paris. While carbonated water was invented by Joseph Priestley in 1767, the first reference found to carbonated lemonade was in 1833 when the drink was sold in British refreshment stalls. R. White's Lemonade has been sold in the UK since 1845.

White's lemonade in Camberwell, south London, in 1845. The White Family took over H. D. Rawlings Ltd. in 1891, the year that it was incorporated, and then R. White & Sons Ltd.

A snowball cocktail A Snowball is a mixture of Advocaat and a carbonated lemonade in approximately equal parts. It may have other ingredients, to taste. It typically contains a squeeze of fresh lime juice, which is shaken with the advocaat before pouring into a glass and topping up with lemonade. In the United Kingdom, it is often sold in both pubs and supermarkets in small bottles of approximately or (known in the pub trade as "splits") and is usually drunk as a "winter warmer".

Tinto de verano (literally "red wine of summer") is a cold, wine-based drink popular in Spain. It is similar to sangria, but simpler, being normally made up of 1 part of table red wine and 1 part gaseosa (a general term for sodas and carbonated drinks), although proportions can vary according to taste. The preferred mixer is a mild-flavored, low-sugar, carbonated lemonade, of which La Casera is the best known brand. Traditional gaseosa can be replicated by mixing Sprite or 7-Up with carbonated water.

Since the reunification of 1990, Schwarzbier, which was common in East Germany, but could hardly be found in West Germany, has become increasingly popular in Germany as a whole. Beer may also be mixed with other beverages such as pils or lager and carbonated lemonade: Radler (lit: cyclist), Alsterwasser (lit: water from the river Alster). German Riesling Since a beer tax law was changed in 1993, many breweries served this trend of mixing beer with other drinks by selling bottles of pre-mixed beverages. Examples are Bibob (by Köstritzer), Veltins V+, Mixery (by Karlsberg), Dimix (by Diebels) and Cab (by Krombacher).

Wine is the basis of „wine schorle“ or “wine spritzer“. Preferred wine varieties are Riesling (Riesling schorle / Riesling spritzer), Blauer Portugieser, vin gris, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner or other red wine. Depending on what the wine is mixed with, a wine schorle is called “sour” when it is prepared with carbonated water, “sweet” when prepared with carbonated lemonade, or also “sweet and sour” when made with both mineral water and lemonade. In the Palatinate, the ratio of wine is often much larger; depending on the waiting staff, the glass is filled almost completely with wine and diluted with only a spritzer of water, especially in wine bars and at wine festivals.

Mick and Mandy, an adaptation with the original illustrations, and Bob and Jilly, translations with new illustrations, are no longer in print. In 2008 the Dutch publisher, Querido, published a new translation by David Colmer of the first book of the series, with the original illustrations, entitled Jip and Janneke. The series has become something of a popular icon of childhood and has inspired a large amount of merchandise. One of the best known of these is Jip and Janneke Bubbelsap (Bubble Juice), which is a non-alcoholic carbonated lemonade sold in Champagne-style plastic bottles, popular at children's parties and for new year celebrations.
