The printing equipment arrived on the Charlotte Jane on 16 December 1850, and the first edition of the Lyttelton Times was published less than one month later on 11 January 1851. The press was first installed in a shed on Norwich Quay. John Ingram Shrimpton, Ingram Shrimpton's son, came out on the Charlotte Jane with some staff for the newspaper and was manager and canvasser. James FitzGerald was the first editor for the Lyttelton Times, and had agreed to work for free.

The long forgotten book described the internal organization of the Mafia, or "l'onorata società" (the Honoured Society) as Gentile called it, more than 20 years before Tommaso Buscetta emerged as the important first pentito who broke with omertà and told Cosa Nostra's inside story. Gentile was already more explicit than Buscetta in his first confessions. Gentile undiffidently talked about his links with politicians for whom he acted as a canvasser.

Waters was born in Hastings, New Zealand, the son of John Thomas Waters (born Hamilton, Victoria c. 1877; died 7 June 1938) and his wife Margaret (née McGrath). Pigot began life in Melbourne, the eldest son of a butcher turned commercial pilot and his wife who would become one of Australia's pioneering female car sales people. A canvasser for the DC Cannabis Campaign soliciting signatures for Initiative 71 In February 2013, he along with Adam Eidinger and Alan Amsterdam, co-founded DC Marijuana Justice, colloquially known as DCMJ. Starting with a poll that showed voters in the District of Columbia overwhelmingly supported the reform of cannabis laws, the organization submitted their first draft to the District of Columbia Board of Elections. Due to the prohibition of the ballot initiatives from being able to appropriate funds to implement the proposed legislation, the first draft was withdrawn. The second version, which became Initiative 71, was submitted by Adam Eidinger to the DC Board of Elections in early 2014.

Born in Basel, Canton of Basel-Stadt in Switzerland as Rudolf Bernhard Conrath, he attended Realschule and worked as optician in his father's business, then as a canvasser of ads. He gained first stage experience at Dramatischer Verein Basel with performances as a humorist on occasion of club events and family celebrations. On 26 March 1925 Bernhard premiered as a master of ceremonies and with Berlin songs on Küchlintheater Basel. He was the first canvasser for the Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP), and by the 1870s was lecturing on life insurance around New South Wales, Victoria and New Zealand. In 1881 he returned to Sydney as chief metropolitan agent for AMP, and in 1886 he retired to Bowral, New South Wales. In 1887 and 1891 Short unsuccessfully ran for the AMP Board, winning on a reform platform in 1892. Though the drug was fully legalized in the District following a 2014 ballot referendum, the United States Congress exercises oversight over the government of the District of Columbia, preventing the local government from regulating cannabis sales like other jurisdictions with authority derived from a U.S. state. Although marijuana is legal under District law, the possession of marijuana is still illegal under federal law. Marijuana prohibition is enforced on federal lands, including national parks and military property.

In 1983, opposition leader Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. was assassinated at Manila International Airport upon his return to the Philippines after a long period of exile in the United States. This coalesced popular dissatisfaction with Marcos and began a series of events, including pressure from the United States, that culminated in a snap presidential election on February 7, 1986. The opposition united under Aquino's widow, Corazon Aquino, and Salvador Laurel, head of the United Nationalists Democratic Organizations (UNIDO). The election was marred by widespread reports of violence and tampering with results by both sides. The official election canvasser, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), declared Marcos the winner, despite a walk-out staged by disenfranchised computer technicians on February 9.

Following their debunking of When Contact Changes Minds, Broockman and Kalla (2016) conducted an experiment similar to the one purported to have been conducted by LaCour and Green. Households in Florida were sent a survey on social attitudes, and were later visited by canvassers to discuss either recycling or transphobia and transgender rights, with the change in the householders' opinions tracked by follow-up surveys. The study found that extended conversations with canvassers did in fact reduce anti-transgender prejudice and were more effective long-term than attack ads. However, contrary to one of LaCour's claims, the identity of the canvasser did not seem to matter; both transgender and non-transgender canvassers had a similar effect.

During the Nigerian third republic, Shinkafi was one of the promoters of the Nigerian National Congress (NNC) a political association formed in 1989 after the disbanding of political groups by the Babangida administration, the NNC later joined the National Republican Convention. Early on, Shinkafi emerged as a leading presidential candidate during the period Babangida banned old breed politicians, he created a choice 92 campaign group for his presidential ambition which intended to have a canvasser in every ward of the federation. Woodson became affiliated with the Washington, D.C. branch of the NAACP, and its chairman Archibald Grimké. On January 28, 1915, Woodson wrote a letter to Grimké expressing his dissatisfaction with activities and making two proposals: #That the branch secure an office for a center to which persons may report whatever concerns the black race may have, and from which the Association may extend its operations into every part of the city; and #That a canvasser be appointed to enlist members and obtain subscriptions for The Crisis, the NAACP magazine edited by W. E. B. Du Bois. Du Bois added the proposal to divert "patronage from business establishments which do not treat races alike," that is, boycott businesses. Woodson wrote that he would cooperate as one of the twenty-five effective canvassers, adding that he would pay the office rent for one month.

The action of The Foxtrot is broken up into several distinct sections, each one allocated an appropriate intertitle. While many of these captions simply describe the scene taking place — "At the pub", "After the funeral", and so on — there are also instances where Adrian uses the intertitles to explicitly reference the tone and undercurrent of particular sequences. During the opening scene, Arthur is asked by a canvasser about his attitude towards the permissive society, at which point a caption appears on screen that reads "Gwen hasn't told Arthur about Tom"; that night, as Arthur and Gwen are talking in bed, a caption introduces the scene as "A tender moment"; towards the end of the play, during one of Tom's many visits to the house, a title announces this as "The Tom, Gwen and Arthur Show". The play constantly blurs the boundary between what is seen on television and how it relates to, and even shapes, "real life".
