Nobel Prize-winner John Steinbeck wrote about Hurricane Donna in his 1962 non-fiction memoir Travels with Charley: In Search of America. Steinbeck had had a truck fitted with a custom camper-shell for a journey he intended to take across the United States, accompanied by his poodle Charley. He planned on leaving after Labor Day from his home in Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York. Steinbeck delayed his trip slightly due to Donna, which made a direct hit on Long Island.

Toro y Moi released the album on July 7, 2017. One day before the release, Toro y Moi uploaded an album stream and short film to YouTube, which was directed and produced by Company Studio. The short film is a predominantly single-take, rotating evening shot from within the camper shell of a truck, featuring Chaz Bear sightseeing at Treasure Island, San Francisco before driving the truck to Grizzly Peak, Berkeley Hills to view the evening twilight over the Bay Area. The short is periodically overlaid with random scenes featuring Bear at a studio, which location has been featured in prior music videos for "Girl Like You" and "You and I".

An animal hospital, elephant barn, and a freezer--to store meat for the big cats --were also constructed. Hedren operated a backhoe on the set, and was in charge of the film's wardrobe, which she described as a plain "wash-and-wear look". After Marshall took in two infant Siberian tigers and an African bull elephant named Timbo from the Okanagan Game Preserve, he decided to revise the film's script to include different animals, and changed the formerly leo- centric title to Roar. Another addition to the script involved Timbo crushing the family's rowboat, inspired by seeing the elephant destroy a metal camper shell.

During the drive home from Los Angeles International Airport, Smoke relinquished the wheel to Keiko and crawled in the back of his small truck to sleep under the camper shell. Somewhere near the town of Mojave, Keiko lost control of the vehicle; it slipped from the road and rolled. She was relatively unhurt but Smoke suffered massive head trauma and after spending more than a week in intensive care, he died of his injuries on June 23, 1989. His friends held a memorial service for him in the Buttermilk Rocks near Bishop as the summer climbing season wound down and before the Asian trekking season started, allowing all of his friends, fellow guides, and loved ones to be there.

1978–1979 Ford Bronco (modified) For 1978, Ford redesigned the Ford Bronco, basing it upon the F-Series chassis (shortened to a 104-inch wheelbase). Taking on the wagon bodystyle of the 1966–1977 Bronco, the full-size 1978 Bronco was designed with a removable camper shell hardtop, similar to the Chevrolet K5 Blazer/GMC Jimmy. The new Bronco incorporated design characteristics which eliminated leaky roofs and body flex associated with other full size removable top utility vehicles of the era. To lower production costs over its predecessor, the Bronco was designed with interchangeability with the Ford F-150 4x4, sharing nearly all exterior body panels from the front doors forward, many interior and trim parts, and the same powertrain.

Steinbeck opened the book by describing his lifelong wanderlust and his preparations to rediscover the country he felt he had lost touch with after living in New York City and traveling in Europe for 20 years. He was 58 years old in 1960 and nearing the end of his career, but he felt that when he was writing about America and its people he "was writing of something [he] did not know about, and it seemed to [him] that in a so-called writer this is criminal" (p. 6). He bought a new GMC pickup truck, which he named Rocinante, and had it fitted with a custom camper-shell for his journey. At the last minute, he decided to take his wife's 10-year-old French Poodle Charley, with whom he has many mental conversations as a device for exploring his thoughts.
