Another hill appears, followed by a large turn, leading riders to a cave in middle of the air.
After the train leaves the station, it begins its ascent up the chain lift hill. Once reaching the top of the hill, the coaster drops at 74° over the Rivertown midway reaching speeds up to . It then curves to the right up a hill, past Mystic Timbers' first drop, and then dives into the ravine, curving again to the left. The ride then ascends a camelback hill and drops, curving left into the hammerhead turn.

Map of Metro Light Rail system, showing starter line and future expansion corridors Starting in 2013, Valley Metro along with the cities of Glendale and Phoenix approved a project to study the potential extension of light rail, bus rapid transit or streetcar to Glendale. Initially three different route options were proposed, all of which headed west from the current light rail system and featured a shared terminus in the Downtown Glendale area. Options included travel directly across Glendale Avenue, as well as routes which travel along Camelback Road and a combination of 43rd and 51st avenues, before entering the shared downtown terminus area. In February 2016, a community working group recommend a route for this project, this route travels along Camelback Road until 43rd Avenue, at which point light rail would travel north along 43rd Avenue until Glendale Avenue, from there it would continue west until it reaches 56th Avenue, where the route is likely to shift approximately north to Glenn Drive, where it will continue to the downtown terminus.
Deep River Camelback Bridge Aug 2012 The Deep River Camelback Truss Bridge, identified as Truss Bridge #155 by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, spans the Deep River on SR 2153 north of the community of Cumnock in northern Lee County, providing access between Cumnock and the Gulf community in southern Chatham County. After the last hill there is an on-ride photo camera and the ride's finale, a 630 degree helix, in which riders experience lateral g-force.
The Pratt truss was an American style bridge truss that began the tide of change from British to American bridge technology in the nineteenth century. The Bethanga example comes from a period when Pratt trusses were an established design alternative, favoured by railways but generally shunned in Victorian road bridge design. It is a type of truss in which vertical web members are in compression and diagonal web members in tension. Many possible configurations include pitched, flat, or camelback top chords.
Note: The material in this section is taken from a different HAER report. The 1892 Sixth Street Bridge (as described above, a pair of camelback Pratt trusses and the third bridge built in this location) had a second chance. In 1927, it was lowered from its piers, the top chords partially disassembled. The structure was floated downriver to a new location over the Ohio River back channel between Coraopolis and Neville Island to make way for the current Sixth Street Bridge structure.

The ranch has changed hands a number of times since the Bronson's tenure, but remains one of the most authentic examples of a working dude ranch in Wyoming.
The train then goes through a trim brake, before entering a corkscrew, then a camelback hill which is a common way of achieving air-time on roller coasters. The train then makes a sharp left turn before making a sharp right turn which leads into the brake run. The train then makes a left turn into another set of brakes before entering the station where the next riders board the train. One cycle of the ride lasts about 2 minutes and 22 seconds.

Spotnitz graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a bachelor's degree in English literature in 1982, where he was a reporter for the Daily Bruin. He later received a MFA in screenwriting from the AFI Conservatory in 1991.
The Brophy College Chapel Central Avenue extends from South Mountain Park to North Mountain in Phoenix. The Central Avenue Corridor, roughly from Camelback Road to McDowell Road, is one of Phoenix's most heavily trafficked stretches of roadway. The Central Avenue Corridor bisects the area known as Midtown, Phoenix, a collection of neighborhoods north of Downtown and south of the North-Central and Sunnyslope areas. For the most part, Central Avenue marks the "zero" point of east/west addresses in the Phoenix area.
Low profile desert landscaping surrounded the theatre, including palm, Russian Olive, and Italian cypress trees. Patrons could be see the Camelback Mountain and its Praying Monk rock formation from the two-level lobby. The auditorium was enveloped in a of antique gold fabric covering the proscenium and walls. A gold curtain moved vertically to reveal the title curtain behind, which opened horizontally to expose the film on a giant curved screen which extended out to the fifth row of seats.
Along the Arizona Canal in Phoenix, a 750-kilowatt restored hydroelectric plant and art display opened in June 2003 in Arcadia at a natural 20-foot drop called Arizona Falls. Arcadia is a neighborhood in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona. It is bounded 44th Street to 68th Street and Camelback Road to the canal. Arcadia contains well-kept homes on large lots; these homes command relatively high property values (as the neighborhood is adjacent to the upscale suburbs of Paradise Valley, the Biltmore area, Scottsdale and north Phoenix).
The Gateway Trail Iron Bridge is a historic camelback truss bridge on the Gateway State Trail in Stillwater Township, Minnesota, United States. The bridge has stood in three locations in Minnesota. Its main span was built of wrought iron in 1873—before steel became the preferred material for metal bridges—and erected in Sauk Centre in Central Minnesota. Designated Bridge No. 5721, it was refurbished and moved in 1937 to rural Koochiching County in northern Minnesota, where it became known as the Silverdale Bridge.
The maximum length is limited by the distance between the peaks of the camelback humps; thus, a rod longer than that will be unstable and fall out of the trap. Both the radius and the length of the rod determine the damping of the system. The damping is primarily due to Stokes drag, as damping is non-observable under vacuum. Possible practical uses of the concept include being a platform for custom-designed 1D potentials, a highly sensitive force-distance transducer or a trap for semiconductor nanowires.
In 1985 Charles Keating purchased the property at the base of Camelback Mountain, which included the land occupied by the historic Jokake Inn and Elizabeth Arden's Maine Chance Spa. In addition, three other valley facilities also sat on the acreage Keating purchased: the Paradise Inn, the Valley Country Club, and the El Estribo Lodge. As architects, Keating hired the firm of Killingsworth, Stricker, Lindgren, Wilson and Associates, located in Long Beach, California. The spa, the Centre for Well Being, was designed by JGL Associates, out of Vermont.
After the train is dispatched from the station, it enters a small dip and into a short U-turn followed by a 70-foot-tall (21 m) chain lift hill. When the train reaches the top of the hill, the train slopes down and into a 90-degree banked turn. The train then enters the first drop and goes into a small camelback where rides experience a sensation of airtime. The train makes a sloped banked right turn and into a set of two consecutive corkscrews.
Maynard is the first quadruple amputee to climb Mount Kilimanjaro without the aid of prosthetics. In 2011, it was announced that Maynard was planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro without the aid of prosthetics. To prepare for the climb, he trained at a series of locations around the US, including Stone Mountain and Blood Mountain in Georgia, Winter Park in Colorado, and Camelback Mountain in Arizona, with expedition co- leader, Dan Adams,"Congenital amputee who loves challenges trains for Mount Kilimanjaro" CNN. Retrieved 2016-04-25.
After the train departs the station, it travels over the resort gate walkway, down a slight decline into a 90-degree turn to the right and engages the chain, which operates at a speed of , to begin the climb to the top of the lift hill. The train descends at a 60-degree angle, reaching a top speed of . The train then ascends a camelback hill, curving to the left into the first tunnel. Coming out of the tunnel, the train ascends a third, -tall hill.
Brophy College Preparatory is a Jesuit high school in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. The school has an all-male enrollment of approximately 1,400 students. It is operated independently Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. The school has three campuses: the main academic campus in north-central Phoenix at Central Avenue and Camelback Road, a retreat campus called Manresa near Sedona, and the new Brophy Sports Campus east of the academic campus in Phoenix and adjacent to the campus of the all-girls Xavier College Preparatory.
During the initial development of Harrisburg, the island was only able to be reached by boat, until 1817 when the Camelback Bridge, site of the present-day Market Street Bridge, was completed. In 1903, the Harrisburg Athletics professional baseball team arrived at the park, but the team later folded. By the 1980s, concerts were held in the old field that was left over, such as Metallica (July 12, 1989) and Grateful Dead (June 22, 1983 and June 23, 1984). However, major bands slowly stopped coming to Harrisburg when the amusement tax was created in 1982.
The bridge was built to break the toll monopoly enjoyed by the neighboring Camelback Bridge (now the Market Street Bridge). The Walnut Street Bridge was closed to motor vehicles and converted to a pedestrian and bikeway link to City Island after the 1972 Hurricane Agnes flood. The eastern span of the bridge is outlined in lights which, along with the City Island facilities, create a dynamic visual effect at night. The span is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
State Route 50, also known as the Paradise Parkway, was a proposed urban freeway through Glendale and Phoenix. Originally proposed in 1968 as SR 317, the freeway would have run east to west, connecting the future State Route 51 and Loop 101, while running roughly parallel to, and north of, I-10 in the vicinity of Camelback Road. The proposed freeway was reassigned as SR 50 in 1987. As the proposed freeway would have crossed through largely developed land and densely populated neighborhoods, it proved to be both extremely expensive and highly unpopular.
When a diamagnetic rod (usually graphite) is placed between the magnets, it will remain in place and move back and forth in harmonic motion when disturbed. This arrangement, also known as a "PDL trap" for "parallel dipole line", was the subject of the 2017 International Physics Olympiad. In the magnetic system, the camelback potential effect only occurs when the length of the diamagnetic rod is between two critical lengths. Below the minimum length, the magnet is hypothesized to align with magnetic field lines, hence not maintaining its orientation and touching the magnet.
The EFP Bridge spans Owl Creek in Hot Springs County, Wyoming. The bridge was erected in 1919–20 by the Monarch Engineering Company of Denver and spans with a total length of . The rigid 7-panel camelback through-truss was nominated for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places as one of forty bridges throughout Wyoming that collectively illustrate steel truss construction, a technique of bridge design that has become obsolete since the mid-twentieth century. The bridge is supported on sandstone abutments and has a timber deck, in width.
In 1984, Pemberton suffered a severe flood event and many residents had to be evacuated. In the fall of 2003 another flood event occurred, washing out highway 99 at Rutherford Creek; cutting Pemberton off from the coast. In 2009, a prolonged drought followed by thunderstorms led to the Camelback Mountain and Copperdome Mountain wildfires in the upper Pemberton Valley and several farms had to be evacuated. On August 6, 2010, the Pemberton Valley was on evacuation alert due to a nearby landslide from Mount Meager, despite articles to the contrary Pemberton was not actually evacuated.
The Boise River and Canal Bridge, in Caldwell, Idaho, is a three-span, Warren camelback through-truss design constructed in 1922 by the American Bridge Company from plans submitted by Caldwell city engineer Fred H. McConnel. The site is where Oregon Trail pioneers forded the Boise River. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The Boise River and Canal Bridge replaced an earlier bridge known as the Canyon Hill Bridge, and when the new bridge was commissioned by Canyon County officials, it continued under the same name.
Piestewa Peak ( ; , formerly Squaw Peak), at is the second highest point in the Phoenix Mountains, after Camelback Mountain, and the third highest in the city of Phoenix, Arizona. It is located in the Piestewa Peak Recreation Area within the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, near Piestewa Parkway (Arizona State Highway 51). Piestewa Peak is named in honor of Army Spc. Lori Ann Piestewa, the first known Native American woman to die in combat in the U.S. military, and the first female soldier to be killed in action in the 2003 Iraq War.
The Central Avenue Corridor is a significant stretch of north-south Central Avenue, in Phoenix, Arizona. Roughly bounded by Camelback Road to its north, and McDowell Road to its south, this is one of Phoenix's most vital and heavily trafficked stretches of roadway. It is also one of the region's largest centers of employment, with nearly 60,000 people being employed within a three-mile (5 km) radius of this swath of Central Avenue. Major employers here include major banks and financial institutions, hi-tech companies, and several significant law firms and government agencies.
Besides patenting ingenious inventions for coasters—including several types of brakes and car bar locks—Miller built his share of unusual "scream machines." In 1920 Miller went into business with Harry C. Baker as "Miller & Baker, Inc." and over the next three years, they built popular coasters all over North America. Characteristics of their roller coasters are camelback hills (multiple straight or slightly angled drops that went all the way to the ground) and large, flat turns. Miller & Baker built other types of amusement rides and structures as well.
In 1927, further orders were completely prohibited. The Philadelphia and Reading's crews referred to these locomotives as Mother Hubbards. The B & O crews, who had co- use of the Reading's line from Philadelphia to Bound Brook NJ (the Reading's junction with the Central RR of New Jersey's line to Jersey City across from New York City) called the Camelbacks "Snappers" in reference to a possible side rod snapping and flailing into the cab.Baltimore and Ohio Museum discussion of their Camelback display locomotive Many Camelbacks were converted into end-cab locomotives.

The Crystal Springs Street–Dowagiac River Bridge is a road bridge that carries Crystal Springs Street over the Dowagiac River near Sumnerville, Michigan. It was installed in that location in 2017. Between 1938 and 2016, the bridge was located approximately 50 miles away, and carried M-86 over the Prairie River near Nottawa, Michigan, and was known then as the M-86–Prairie River Bridge. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, and is the last remaining camelback pony truss bridge used on the state trunkline system in Michigan.
Tong Fo (Chinese for "Pain Buddha") is a loris crime lord exclusive to Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness who speaks with an impersonation of Christopher Walken. He was known for once wielding the Sacred Hammer of Lei Lang and caused mass destruction with it. Tong Fo ended up defeated and was imprisoned in Chorh-Gom Prison. Before Tong Fo was incarcerated, he made a replica of the hammer and hid the real one in Camelback Mountain keeping its whereabouts a secret with the fake copy eventually finding its way at the Jade Palace.
In the United States on the Southern Pacific Railroad, a series of cab forward locomotives were produced with the cab and the firebox at the front of the locomotive and the tender behind the smokebox, so that the engine appeared to run backwards. This was only possible by using oil-firing. Southern Pacific selected this design to provide air free of smoke for the engine driver to breathe as the locomotive passed through mountain tunnels and snow sheds. Another variation was the Camelback locomotive, with the cab situated halfway along the boiler.
A second out-of-state location came online at 16 West Camelback in Phoenix, Arizona, on November 23, 1978. Tucson, Arizona; Lakewood, Colorado; and San Jose, California; came online in 1979, bringing the number of stores in operation to 15. During the 1970s, there was one store that ended up relocating because a landlord refused to renew a lease with reasonable terms. Other than that, Eberlin was proud to point out that no store had ever been closed in the history of the chain (up to the moment of bankruptcy in 1998).
Deep River is a tributary of the Cape Fear River, approximately 125 miles (200 km) long, in north central North Carolina in the United States. Deep River is a translation of the Indian name sapponah, "deep river". Paddling is popular on the river. Deep River is flanked by the planned Deep River State Trail and several other parks and preservation areas including Carbonton Dam Park, House in the Horseshoe Historic Site, Deep River Park and Deep River Camelback Truss Bridge, Endor Iron Furnace, White Pines Nature Preserve, Lockville Dam, Canal and Powerhouse, and Mermaid Point.
Clarkton Bridge was a historic Pratt truss bridge located over the Staunton River near Nathalie, in Charlotte County, Virginia. It was built in 1902 by the Virginia Bridge & Iron Co., and was the only remaining metal truss structure in Virginia built for highway purposes, which was supported by steel cylinder piers. It consisted of two camelback, pin-connected steel through truss channel spans, and twelve steel deck beam approach spans. The overall dimensions of the bridge approach and truss spans were as follows: north approach, with twelve deck spans; north truss, ; south truss, .
The Brookline- Newfane Bridge is located on the West River, which forms the town line between northeastern Newfane and southwestern Brookline. The road it carries is called Grassy Spring Road (or Town Highway 1) in Brookline and Radway Hill Road (Town Highway 4) in Newfane. The bridge, which is owned jointly by the two towns, is the principal means of access to Brookline from the south, and Grassy Brook Road is the town's principal thoroughfare. It is a camelback through truss iron structure, with a main span of and a total width of .
Gentry was a second baseman at Camelback High School in Phoenix, Arizona, and only began pitching while at Phoenix Junior College. He was drafted by the Houston Astros in the eleventh round of the inaugural major league draft in , and was a first round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in the January Secondary Draft in , but signed with neither team, choosing instead to remain in college. In 1966, he led the Bears to a national junior college championship. Shortly afterwards, he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants, but again chose not to sign.
The main video board measures tall by wide and weighs around three tons. Design for the facility was done by 360 Architecture and Tempe-based Architekton. When construction of the arena was complete there were a total of 255,000 man hours, 8,870 yards of concrete, 41,000 bricks, 793 tons of structural steel, of electrical wiring, and 2,300 light fixtures. Notable features include large windows providing natural light, ceiling beams signed by GCU employees and students, a vault of Bibles buried at center court and an outdoor balcony with views of the Camelback Road campus.

Nevertheless, X-rated movies and Playboy magazine were banned from his hotels. In October 1988, Keating opened his most extravagant real estate project ever, the , 600-room The Phoenician Resort at the base of Camelback Mountain. Its construction cost $300 million, included many opulent, imported features, and saw a number of instances of Keating or his decorator wife making wholesale late design changes at great expense. His other grand project was Estrella, a mixed-use development outside of Phoenix in Goodyear, Arizona, in the direction of the Sierra Estrella.
Eager to help the motor vehicle industry, the Michigan Department of Transportation was one of the first state agencies in the U.S. to build concrete bridges. A good example, long, can be found spanning the Thunder Bay River at Hillman. Raised in 1922, it is of the variety called a concrete camelback bridge, and is said to be the fifth longest such bridge in the state. "M-32 Spur/Thunder Bay River", accessed 31 March 2007 The Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Trail will include a new pedestrian bridge across the Thunder Bay in central Alpena.
In the 1930s, Jack Stewart, a sportswriter and publicist from Fargo, North Dakota, wanted to build a pueblo-style hotel which could reflect Southwestern and Native American culture rather than the more commonplace dude ranch-style resort. Stewart's project was funded by John C. Lincoln, an industrialist and founder of Lincoln Electric, who provided $200,000 and the land which Lincoln owned between the slopes of Mummy and Camelback Mountains. The property was remote desert scrub land located outside Phoenix and had no water, electricity or telephone access. The resort was constructed of adobe bricks which were made on the site.
On steam locomotives, the cab is normally located to the rear of the firebox, although steam locomotives have sometimes been constructed in a cab forward or camelback configuration. The cab, or crew or driver's compartment of a diesel or electric locomotive will usually be found either inside a cabin attached to a hood unit or cowl unit locomotive, or forming one of the structural elements of a cab unit locomotive. The former arrangement is now the norm in North America for all types of diesel or electric locomotives. In Europe, most modern locomotives are cab units with two cabs, one at each end.
Contrary to popular belief, the Westward Ho does not appear in the opening sequence of the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho. The clip fades in centered on Hotel San Carlos, which is located on the northwest corner of Central and Monroe. The former Arizona Bank Building (under-construction) can be seen just west of Hotel San Carlos, and Camelback Mountain can be seen in the background. When the camera pans south to the right you can see the Heard Building in the foreground with its antenna, which was often confused to be the Westward Ho antenna.
Symington believed it to be the "best location in town for business," and as of 2007, still had his own office on the fourth floor of the building. The financing of the project would later play a part in an investigation in his involvement with Southwest Savings and Loan, which provided the funds with Symington on its board of directors. Symington has stated that the approval of the construction of the Esplanade was significant because nothing over four stories had ever been granted along Camelback Road. The Esplanade took two decades to finish construction, with construction beginning in 1983, and completing in 2003.
The train then drops towards the ground, climbs back up, and spins through a zero-g roll, an inverting element where riders experience the feeling of weightlessness. Afterwards, the train dives back towards the ground and enters the two-inversion batwing element that crosses through a tunnel underneath the park's rear entrance. After the train exits the batwing, it climbs through a camelback hill over the station before entering the final inversion, a corkscrew to the right. The train then begins a 200-degree turn while climbing to the left, after which it reaches the ride's brake run and returns to the station.
Architect Wenceslaus Sarmiento's largest project, the landmark Phoenix Financial Center (3443 N, better known by locals as the "Punch-card Building" in recognition of its unique southeastern facade) was also first finished in 1964 for banker and developer David Murdoch. Eight floors were added four years later. In addition to a number of other office towers, most of Phoenix's residential high-rises, such as the Landmark on Central (4750 N, then known as Camelback Towers), Executive Towers (207 W. Clarendon) and the Regency On Central (ROC) (2323 N, then known as Regency Apartments), were built during this decade.
Camelback Mountain or Big Pocono is a conspicuous geographic feature on the Pocono Plateau. It is not a mountain, but rather a peninsular section of the Pocono Plateau, that when viewed from three sides, appears to be a mountain. The summit of Big Pocono "Mountain" is actually nearly level with land to the west and northwest, together comprising the top of the Glaciated Pocono Plateau, which is part of the larger Allegheny Plateau. The Pocono Plateau, a distinctive geologic feature not to be confused with the larger Pocono Mountains, is a glaciated plateau formed during at least three glacial movements.

Overstock CEO reflects on Cramer debacle March 28, 2007 After her article appeared in 2005, McLean was attacked by Byrne with such vehemence that she ceased covering him. In the first lawsuit, filed 2005, Overstock.com filed suit against hedge fund Rocker Partners and the equities research firm, Gradient Analytics (formerly Camelback Research Alliance), saying they illegally colluded in short-selling the company while paying for negative reports to drive down share prices. The defendant (i.e. Gradient Analytics et al.) moved to have the case dismissed, however the California court ruled in August 2006 that the suit should be allowed to proceed.
Other than the mountains in and around the city, Phoenix's topography is generally flat, which allows the city's main streets to run on a precise grid with wide, open-spaced roadways. Scattered, low mountain ranges surround the valley: McDowell Mountains to the northeast, the White Tank Mountains to the west, the Superstition Mountains far to the east, and both South Mountain and the Sierra Estrella to the south/southwest. Camelback Mountain, North Mountain, Sunnyslope Mountain, and Piestewa Peak are within the heart of the valley. The city's outskirts have large fields of irrigated cropland and Native American reservation lands.
Sign greeting visitors to Dodgers spring training The Dodgers began spring training at Camelback Ranch on February 19, 2015, when pitchers and catchers reported. They suffered their first significant injury of the season just before the start of camp when closer Kenley Jansen underwent surgery to remove a growth on his foot, sidelining him for all of camp and the start of the season. The Dodgers added to their depth with two additional free agent signings the first weekend of camp. They signed starting pitcher Brandon Beachy to a one-year, $2.75 million, contract that included a club option for 2016.
Across The Years is a series of timed multi-day ultra-marathons held from December 28-January 1 each year outside Phoenix, Arizona. It consists of a 24-hour race, a 48-hour race, a 72-hour race and a 6-day race. The 6-day race was reintroduced for the 2013-2014 edition. All races are held on a 1.05 mile loop at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, AZ. The 6-day race begins on December 28 and ends on January 3. The 72-hour race starts at 9am on December 29 and ends at 9am on January 1.
The 24-hour race is held in three sessions, one each day during the 72-hour race, from 9am to 9am. The 48-hour race is likewise held in two sessions, overlapping on the second day. This race has become very popular in recent years and as a result, until 2010, hopeful participants must have been picked in a lottery to have an opportunity to participate. However, due to the increased capacity at Camelback Ranch, in 2011 the lottery was removed and registration was once again offered to all on a first-come, first-served basis.

View south from Big Pocono State Park at Camelback Mountain The land on which Big Pocono State Park is situated was owned by Henry S. Cattell at the turn of the 20th century. Knowing of the fondness that others in the area shared with him for the view that the summit provided, Cattell constructed a stone cabin there in 1908. For many years the cabin was left unlocked so that anyone who wished to use it as a shelter, could. The Pennsylvania Game Commission purchased the land in 1928, 12 years following the death of Cattell.
In 1950, the state leased a portion of the land on the north slope for commercial development. The company was later renamed the Camelback Ski Corporation, and the facility is now a major ski resort. In 1953, the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters (now the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) acquired of state game lands, which comprised the land that was purchased by the Game Commission, including the ski area lease, and the area immediately around the summit. Big Pocono State Park opened to the public in 1954, following the construction of facilities and the scenic drive around the summit.
After graduating with a culinary arts degree, Izard worked in the Phoenix area at the Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, and Christopher Gross's Fermier Brasserie. Izard returned to the Chicago area in 2001, with a job as garde manger at Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Vong. While working at Vong, Izard met future "Top Chef" contestant Dale Talde, and Heather Shouse, with whom she would later co-author the cookbook "Girl in the Kitchen: How a Top Chef Cooks, Thinks, Shops, Eats, and Drinks". After leaving Vong, Izard worked as tournant at Shawn McClain's Spring, and then as sous chef at Dale Levitski's La Tache.
St. Mary's Basilica The Phoenix Points of Pride are 33 landmarks and attractions in Phoenix, Arizona, selected by voters since 1992 to represent the city's best features for residents and visitors. They include structures, such as St. Mary's Basilica, the Phoenix Zoo and US Airways Center; and natural formations such as Camelback Mountain and Hole-in-the-Rock at Papago Park. Mystery Castle The first 25 Points of Pride were selected in 1992. The program was seen as a way to boost civic morale in the wake of negative national publicity for Phoenix in the wake of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday controversy.
Twenty were eventually manufactured out of dark wood by White House carpenters, although the gray granite tops for the Kennedy-designed ashtrays were made by Jansen at a cost of $310. Much of the furniture in the East Room was removed by Boudin to make the room appear to be of a single historic era. The 1902 console tables were removed from the piers between the windows, and the 1902 Louis XVI style floor lamps moved out of the corners and in front of the piers. The 1952 Adam-style camelback sofas were removed at the instigation of du Pont, and replaced with gilt benches.
The Erie L-1s were camelback 0-8-8-0s 0-8-8-0 No. 8701 of the New York Central Railroad at Detroit, Michigan in 1921. This is a transfer locomotive. In the Whyte notation for classifying the wheel arrangement of steam locomotives, an 0-8-8-0 is a locomotive with two sets of eight driving wheels and neither leading wheels nor trailing wheels. Two sets of driving wheels would give far too long a wheelbase to be mounted in a fixed locomotive frame, so all 0-8-8-0s have been articulated locomotives of the Mallet type, whether simple or compound.
Graph of magnetic flux density along axis of the magnets in a PDL trap. A camelback potential is potential energy curve that looks like a normal distribution with a distinct dip where the peak would be, so named because it resembles the humps on a camel's back. The term was applied to a configuration of a superconducting quantum interference device in 2009, and to an arrangement of magnets in 2014. The latter system consists of two parallel diametric cylindrical magnets, that is, magnets that are magnetized perpendicular to their axis, with the north and south poles located on the curved surface as opposed to either end.
Compton used it to continue the freeform format he had pioneered at KRUXhosting on-air shifts and hiring similarly minded disc jockeys such as Gary Kinsey (on-air name, Toad Hall) and Hank Cookenboo. Initially housed in a small house on Camelback Road, KCAC quickly attracted a loyal audience seeking an alternative to Top-40 radio. Mark Davis, a guest columnist in the Arizona Republic described its air sound: > Free-form programming as used by KCAC allows the individual announcer > complete discretion. This allows some of the innovations in rock air time > denied under Top 40 programming, as well as opening the door to other > musical forms.

After numerous failed initiatives, Phoenix voters finally approved the Transit 2000 Regional Transportation Plan which dedicates a percentage of funds raised through a 4/10-cent (four cents on ten dollars) sales tax to build the METRO Light Rail line. The initial phase, which opened for service in late December 2008, begins at Christown Spectrum Mall, to Camelback, down Central, and then down Washington Street en route to Tempe and Mesa. On Central Avenue, there are seven stops in Midtown and Uptown Phoenix and three in downtown. The three-year construction process commenced in late 2005, with the final rail being laid in late April, 2008.
In Midtown, the market responded with two mid-rise projects, the Artisan Lofts (1326 N), which opened in 2004 and the Tapestry on Central (2302 N), which opened in 2007. Tapestry is also notable as its construction brought down the last of the estate homes on that stretch of Central. Capitalizing on its retro mid-1960s styling, Camelback Towers became the Landmark on Central in 2004, continuing a tradition of the city's few apartment towers becoming ownership condominia later on. Also that year, Century Plaza Century Plaza (3225 N), originally built in 1974 as offices, began a complete exterior and interior remodel as part of its conversion to condominia.
After the latter, the road heads more to the north and passes through Reeders. The route heads northeast into Pocono Township and runs through woods with some commercial development, passing to the southeast of the Northampton Community College Monroe Campus before reaching to an interchange with I-80. PA 715 at its northern terminus with PA 191 in Paradise Township From here, PA 715 intersects Sullivan Trail, which provides access to The Crossings Premium Outlets, Camelback Mountain Resort, Big Pocono State Park, and westbound I-80. After this, the route crosses Pocono Creek and forms a short wrong-way concurrency with PA 611 in Tannersville.
The EJP County Line Bridge is a Camelback pony truss bridge located near Hyattville, Wyoming, which carries Big Horn County Road CN9-60 across the Nowood River. The bridge was built in 1917 by the Monarch Engineering Company. As the bridge was originally thought to connect Big Horn and Washakie Counties, the two counties split the cost of the bridge, with each paying for one abutment and the two splitting the cost of the superstructure; this is the only recorded case of two Wyoming counties purchasing a bridge in such a way. Further surveys determined that the bridge is actually located entirely within Big Horn County.
A 4-6-0 camelback built for the Central Railroad of New Jersey by the Baldwin Locomotive Works John E. Wootten developed the Wootten firebox to effectively burn anthracite waste, which was a plentiful, cheap source of fuel. Wootten determined that a large, wide firebox would work best. As the successful trailing truck used to support large fireboxes had not yet been developed, Wootten instead mounted his huge firebox above the locomotive's driving wheels. The problem now arose that with a cab floor at the then standard tender deck height, it would be impossible for the locomotive's engineer to see forwards around the firebox shoulders.
Firefly and Red Frog Events have partnered with St. Jude's Music Gives to St. Jude Kids program to "enlist artists large and small, emerging and established, to join St. Jude in the fight against childhood cancer." This program includes having a tent for donations at the event, having meet-and- greet events with various performers at the concert, and other ways of fundraising for the program. In 2012, Firefly attendees raised over $4.6 million for Music Gives to St. Jude Kids. In addition, Firefly partners with Bud Light, Jack Daniel's, Tito's Vodka, StubHub, AXS TV, Cupcake Vineyards, Alex and Ani, Fye, Dogfish Head, Camelback, El Jimador, and Garnier.
An overbanked turn is a turn or curve in which the track tilts beyond 90 degrees, usually in the 100-120 degree range. The element is common on large steel roller coasters, particularly those built by Intamin and Rocky Mountain Construction. Two examples of an overbanked turn in the United States are the first turn-around on Superman the Ride at Six Flags New England, and Millennium Force at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, which features four separate and two consecutive overbanked turns. Top Thrill Dragster top hat at Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio A Stengel dive combines an overbanked turn with a camelback hill.
100.7 signed on August 1, 1969 as KDOT-FM "K-Dot", a beautiful music station co-owned with KDOT (1440 AM). Owned by Central Arizona Broadcasting, KDOT-FM broadcast beautiful music from studios on the second floor of a building adjacent to the Safari Resort hotel, on Scottsdale Road just north of Camelback Road in Scottsdale. In 1978, First Media Corporation acquired KDOT and its AM counterpart, then known as KSGR, and flipped the stations to Top 40 as simulcasting KOPA-AM-FM. The call sign KOPA was pronounced "copa" and reflected the last two syllables of Maricopa County (home to Scottsdale and the greater Phoenix metropolitan area).
Just north of the business route, the highway intersects SR 655 (Whites Ferry Road), which serves White's Ferry, the last remaining ferry crossing of the Potomac River that connects Leesburg with Poolesville, Maryland. US 15 passes by the historic homes Rockland and Temple Hall and through the community of Lucketts, which is home to the historic Lucketts School. North of Lucketts, the U.S. Highway veers to the west and runs along the eastern flank of Furnace Mountain. The road meets SR 672, which provides access to Lovettsville, before crossing the Potomac River on the Point of Rocks Bridge, a camelback truss bridge, into the Maryland village of Point of Rocks.
However, when he finally began his minor league rehab assignment at Class-A Rancho Cucamonga in late August, he struggled at the plate and his return date was pushed back. He went hitless in five games, with seven strikeouts, and when the minor league season ended on September 2 he was moved to Camelback Ranch to continue his rehab rather than being activated. A few days later, he experienced tightness in the same hamstring he had hurt earlier in the year, and the Dodgers shut him down indefinitely. He eventually rejoined the Dodgers lineup on September 17, and had four hits (including two doubles) in four at bats.

Smith graduated in 1965 from Camelback High School in Phoenix, while three of his Alice Cooper band members graduated from Cortez High School and one from North High School. Smith talks about his high school in the song "Alma Mater" sung by Alice Cooper. Neal Smith's drum part on the title track of Billion Dollar Babies is considered one of the most original and dynamic amongst musicians and fans of the group. Billion Dollar Babies was also the name of the band founded by former Alice Cooper group musicians Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway and Neal Smith along with Bob Dolin and Mike Marconi after they split from Alice Cooper in 1974.
In October 1953 they returned to the US where Hubbard gave a series of lectures in Camden, New Jersey and established the first Church of Scientology. By this time, Mary Sue was well advanced with her second pregnancy and remained largely confined to a rented house at Medford Lakes, New Jersey. They traveled to Phoenix for Christmas 1953 and it was there on January 6, 1954 that Mary Sue gave birth to her second child, Geoffrey Quentin McCaully Hubbard.Miller, p. 214. The Hubbards lived at a house on Tatum Boulevard (now 5501 North 44th Street) on the slopes of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix for the remainder of 1954.
However, Massad's enrollment continued to decline. Massad Bet closed after the 1979 season, and Massad Alef followed suit in 1981. The Massad Alef property was bought by the nearby Camelback Mountain Resort, while the Massad Bet site was used as a camp by the Bobover Hasidic community until 1996. A number of explanations have been given for the decline of the Massad movement, such as the rise and expansion of denominational camps like the Conservative-sponsored Camp Ramah, the Shulsingers' retirement, the availability of summer programs in Israel, the growing weakness of the American centrist Orthodox community, the suburbanization of American Jewry, and a waning birth rate.
Beattie was almost instantly faced with a problem upon appointment as Chief Mechanical Engineer: New Zealand's railway network was expanding, traffic volumes were growing, faster speeds were required, and accordingly, a more powerful type of locomotive was required.History of Technical Innovation in New Zealand – The Steam Railways Furthermore, although this new class was to haul the heaviest and fastest expresses, it was to burn low grade lignite coal from Canterbury and Otago. Baldwin Locomotive Works recommended a camelback design to solve the problem, but Beattie conceived the idea of an enhanced 4-6-0 UB class locomotive with a two-wheel trailing truck to support a wide Wootten firebox.Leitch, Railways of New Zealand, pg. 167.
Like so many young people of that time, he found a fiery inspiration in The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. After playing with The Trolls, Michael became part of Mick Mashbir's (who later played on Billion Dollar Babies and Muscle of Love and also went to Camelback High, the same high school as Neal Smith) band The Wildflowers and started taking lessons. Four songs were recorded by this group ("A Man Like Myself", "On A Day Like Today", "More Than Me" and "Moving Along with the Sun"). Mick had a place in the desert where they rehearsed but it was also a party place and the Alice Cooper gang would hang out and party.
The Dodgers opened their 2010 training camp at Camelback Ranch on February 20, when pitchers and catchers reported to camp. The rest of the position players arrived on February 25 and the exhibition season began on March 5 with an 8–3 victory over the Chicago White Sox. With most of the roster spots set heading into the spring the main competition was expected to be the battle for the Dodgers fifth starter spot among a cast that included Eric Stults, Charlie Haeger, James McDonald, Scott Elbert, Russ Ortiz, Ramón Ortiz and Carlos Monasterios. The Dodgers also needed to pick a starting second baseman from the trio of Blake DeWitt, Ronnie Belliard and Jamey Carroll.

While some internal WVDOT documents refer to the bridge as West Virginia Route 140,Traffic Engineering Directive 220, October 1, 1993 the number is not signed nor shown on state-issued maps. The bridge was completed , and is of a steel through truss design, a combination of two camelback-Warren through trusses, and a 3-span cantilevered Warren through truss.
After turning, the coaster then dives down the second drop into and out of another small metal tunnel that disguises a Double Up that curves left to bring the train parallel to the lift hill. Riders take the third drop back down and over a few small camelback humps and dips that fly past the station and under the later helix exit. The track veers up to the right, then curves left and over the corner of the station roof. The next course dips a bit then banks up and to the right while underneath a black canvas awning and begins a large wide 200 degree turn, whisking the train around to a raised level.
In 1934, the French daily Le Petit Parisien sent her to Manchuria to report on the situation under the Japanese occupation. It was there that she met Peter Fleming, a well-known writer and correspondent of The Times, with whom she would team up to cross China from Peking to Srinagar (3,500 miles), much of the route being through hostile desert regions and steep Himalayan passes. The journey started in February 1935 and took seven months to complete, involving travel by train, on lorries, on foot, horse and camelback. Their objective was to ascertain what was happening in Xinjiang (then also known as Sinkiang or Chinese Turkestan) where the Kumul Rebellion had just ended.

Freestyle is the second oldest stand-up roller coaster in operation., RCDB Shockwave at Kings Dominion had a similar track layout until the second camelback hill, where instead of a trick track and a turn to the right, the ride immediately turned to the left and went over one bunny hill before entering the brake run. As the last TOGO stand up and the oldest Stand Up in North America, Shockwave closed on the 9th of August, making room for Delirium, a HUSS Giant Frisbee.

"When I saw Anita Pallenberg playing the Great Tyrant in that movie in 1968, wearing long black leather gloves with switchblades coming out of them, I thought, 'That's what Alice should look like.' That, and a little bit of Emma Peel from The Avengers." The classic Alice Cooper group lineup consisted of Furnier, lead guitarist Glen Buxton, rhythm guitarist Michael Bruce, bassist Dennis Dunaway, and drummer Neal Smith. With the exception of Smith, who graduated from Camelback High School (which is referred to in the song "Alma Mater" on the album School's Out), all of the band members were on the Cortez High School cross-country team, and many of Cooper's stage effects were inspired by their cross-country coach, Emmett Smith.
Spring training got underway for the Dodgers on February 15, 2017, when pitchers and catchers officially reported to Camelback Ranch to begin their workouts. The Dodgers made a trade early in spring training, sending pitcher Chase De Jong to the Seattle Mariners for minor league infielder Drew Jackson and minor league pitcher Aneurys Zabala. With most of the positions in the lineup locked in before camp, the major battle was for the last couple of spots in the starting rotation behind Clayton Kershaw, Rich Hill and Kenta Maeda. In the mix were veterans Brandon McCarthy, Scott Kazmir and Hyun-jin Ryu, all of whom were coming back from injuries as well as Alex Wood, Ross Stripling, Julio Urias and Brock Stewart.
The railroad and its predecessors would roster a total of eight steam locomotives over the years, all bought second hand and none with a trailing truck. Three of these were camelback locomotives and the wheel arrangements included 4-4-0, 2-6-0, 4-6-0, and 2-8-0. The line's predecessor, the Middletown and Unionville Railroad (M&U;), relied on the nearby New York, Ontario and Western shops for locomotive repairs and inspections and rented fifty-six different O&W; locomotives in thirteen classes while its own was in the O&W; shops. On April 23, 1944, the M&U; retired the last railroad-owned steam locomotive and thereafter leased O&W; locomotives and then NYS&W; 2-10-0 "decapod" steam locomotives.
Liu Mengmei (柳梦梅/柳夢梅) is the main fictionalized character within Tang Xianzu's play The Peony Pavilion, "Liu" meaning 'willow' and "Mengmei" 'dream of plum'. Having lost many provisions and spent several days repairing the boat they continued south to Aswan where the boats had to be left, since they could not make it across the first Cataract. They traveled by small boats and camelback to Elephantine and Philae. At Philae, Champollion spent several days recovering from an attack of gout brought on by the hard trip, and he also received letters from his wife and brother, both sent many months earlier. Champollion attributed their delay to Drovetti's ill will. They arrived at Abu Simbel on 26 November, the site had been visited by Bankes and Belzoni in 1815 and 1817 respectively, but the sand that they had cleared from the entrance had now returned.

A mounted police officer passes Buckingham Palace, London. Mounted police do patrols on horseback (equestrians) or camelback. They continue to serve in remote areas and in metropolitan areas where their day-to-day function may be picturesque or ceremonial, but they are also employed in crowd control because of their mobile mass and height advantage and increasingly in the UK for crime prevention and high visibility policing roles. Mounted police may be employed for specialized duties ranging from patrol of parks and wilderness areas, where police cars would be impractical or noisy, to riot duty, where the horse serves to intimidate those whom it is desired to disperse through its larger size, or may be sent in to snatch trouble makers or offenders from the crowd.
The original Cine Capri Theatre was located at the corner of 24th Street and Camelback Roads in Phoenix, Arizona. The theatre was owned by Paramount Studio, and its construction in 1964 required approval by the Federal District Court of New York to satisfy anti-trust laws. The building was designed by George M. Aurelius, vice-president and general manager of Arizona Paramount Corporation, Henry George Greene, consulting architect to ABC Theaters, W. E. (Bill) Homes, Jr., president of Homes & Son Construction Company, Ralph Haver, president of Haver, Nunn & Jensen, architects for Barrows Plaza, and Spero Kontos of the Los Angeles-based John Filbert Company. The large, facility featured dual colonnades flanking both sides of the theater; ten pre-cast white, columns weighing seven tons each.
Spring Training began for the Dodgers on February 13 when pitchers and catchers reported to work at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona. The primary competition going into camp was in left field where Enrique Hernández, Joc Pederson, Trayce Thompson, Andrew Toles, Alex Verdugo and Matt Kemp were all competing for playing time. The Dodgers re-signed Chase Utley in spring training but he would retire after the season On February 17, the Dodgers announced that they had re-signed second baseman Chase Utley to a two-year, $2 million contract. Map of the urban villages of Phoenix Since 1979, the city of Phoenix has been divided into urban villages, many of which are based upon historically significant neighborhoods and communities that have since been annexed into Phoenix. Each village has a planning committee appointed directly by the city council. According to the city-issued village planning handbook, the purpose of the village planning committees is to "work with the city's planning commission to ensure a balance of housing and employment in each village, concentrate development at identified village cores, and to promote the unique character and identity of the villages." There are 15 urban villages: Ahwatukee Foothills, Alhambra, Camelback East, Central City, Deer Valley, Desert View, Encanto, Estrella, Laveen, Maryvale, North Gateway, North Mountain, Paradise Valley, Rio Vista, and South Mountain.
The Dodgers began spring training on February 12, 2019, when pitchers and catchers reported to camp at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona. On March 10, the Dodgers released right handed relief pitcher Josh Fields when they claimed left-handed pitcher Donnie Hart off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. Clayton Kershaw was expected to be the Dodgers opening day starter for a ninth straight season, but he experienced shoulder inflammation early in camp which kept him from pitching in spring training games and led to him beginning the season on the injured list. Near the end of spring training, Rich Hill came down with a strained MCL, leading to the Dodgers announcing that Hyun-jin Ryu would start on opening day and that Ross Stripling would also begin the season in the rotation.
Four boats, the Americana (painted red, white & blue), the Independence, the Liberty, and the Spirit of New Hope were used from the inauguration of the tourist ride until the 1997 season, when they were replaced by two new boats, the Molly Pitcher and the Myfanwy Jenkins (pronounced "Mivanway"). Armstrong showed her artistic talent at an early age, designing attractive uniforms for the Queens softball team, and then branching out into drawing and painting. She owned and operated one of the early shops in Old Town Scottsdale in the 1950s, The Paint Bucket, in which she sold everything from hand-painted blouses and boxer shorts to wastepaper baskets, handmade cards and invitations. At the time, her shop was a favorite of visiting guests from the Elizabeth Arden spa and Camelback Inn, including singer Peggy Lee, actress Alice Faye and polifacetic entertainer Phil Harris. Her work at the Paint Bucket attracted the owners of O'Brien's Art Emporium in Scottsdale, and with their encouragement, she began a career as a fine artist, creating Trompe-l'œil still life and wildlife images, landscapes and more.
Shambhala's splashdown After departing from the station, the train makes a 90 degree turn to the right, then begins to climb the tall chain lift hill. Once the train reaches the top of the lift, the train drops back down to the ground at a 77.4 degree angle reaching speeds of up to as it passes through a tunnel and races past the drop off Dragon Khan's midcourse brakes. Following the first drop, the train then makes a slight left turn into the first of five camelback hills before dropping again and entering a figure-8-like helix, also known as an ampersand turn. On the return trip, the train goes over a very small hill (speed hill); at the same time, passing through a trim brake which isn’t activated.

11 artillery-towing half-track vehicles. Its versatility concerning the vehicles it could be mounted to included its use even on tank hulls to produce fully armored mobile anti-aircraft vehicles, such as the Panzer IV-based low-production Wirbelwind and original Möbelwagen prototype- design, anti-aircraft tanks. In Kriegsmarine use, it was fitted to U-boats, Siebel ferries and ships to provide short-range anti-aircraft defence, and was also employed in fixed installations around ports, harbours and other strategic naval targets. The Flakvierling was also a common fixture on trains, even on Hitler's own command train, where pairs of them were mounted on either end of a "camelback" flatbed car and then covered to make it look like a boxcar, sometimes with a pair of such twin-Flakvierling mount cars for defense, one near each end of Hitler's Führersonderzug train.
The Peddler (voiced by Robin Williams, singing voice by Bruce Adler) is a mysterious desert-faring merchant, travelling on camelback, who appears at the beginning of the original film, and later reappeared in the ending of Aladdin and the King of Thieves. The entire Peddler scene was improvised by Williams as the actor was put in front of a table with props, and started pitching them as products from a salesman's catalogue."Diamond in the Rough: The Making of Aladdin," Aladdin Platinum Edition, Disc 2 (2004) He implores the viewer to 'come closer', a reference to actor Sydney Greenstreet's many film trailers. In the original ending of Aladdin, the Peddler, now a sailor, was revealed to be the Genie masquerading as a human (or having been turned to human, as suggested at the end), but this was cut from the final film.
When the San Marcos Hotel was built in 1913, Arizona had two other winter resorts in operation: the Castle Hot Springs (Arizona) Hotel and the Ingleside Inn. The Castle Hot Springs hotel was outside of the Salt River Valley and therefore inaccessible to the broader tourist and the Ingleside Inn was a private club and though these hotels were in operation, the San Marcos Hotel was designed as a luxurious winter resort for the wealthy. The hotel served as the prototype of the southwestern winter resort with little competition until the late 1920s when the Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Arizona, Jokake Inn, the Biltmore, and the Camelback in Phoenix, Arizona were built. Dr. Chandler's foresight in resort development and planning in the Arizona desert, provided the Salt River Valley a potential for growth at the time statehood was granted.
The view from Big Pocono State Park at Camelback Mountain The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which "includes nearly 70,000 acres of mountains, valleys and floodplains," is partially located in Monroe County. The county also has Pennsylvania state parks, such as Big Pocono State Park and parts of the Delaware State Forest, Gouldsboro State Park, and Tobyhanna State Park. The Appalachian Trail passes through Monroe County. David Pierce wrote in the Pocono Record, "The 2,184-mile public footpath—from Georgia to Maine—has a particularly scenic but rugged section that straddles Monroe County’s southern border..." He stated that "trail hiking has long been an integral part of Monroe County's identity..." During the Revolutionary War in 1779, General John Sullivan marched his troops through Monroe County on their expedition to fight the Iroquois tribe in New York State.
Other popular sites in the city are Japanese Friendship Garden, Historic Heritage Square, Phoenix Mountains Park, Pueblo Grande Museum, Tovrea Castle, Camelback Mountain, Hole in the Rock, Mystery Castle, St. Mary's Basilica, Taliesin West, and the Wrigley Mansion. Many annual events in and near Phoenix celebrate the city's heritage and its diversity. They include the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, the world's largest horse show; Matsuri, a celebration of Japanese culture; Pueblo Grande Indian Market, an event highlighting Native American arts and crafts; Grand Menorah Lighting, a December event celebrating Hanukah; ZooLights, a December evening event at the Phoenix Zoo that features millions of lights; the Arizona State Fair, begun in 1884; Scottish Gathering & Highland Games, an event celebrating Scottish heritage; Estrella War, a celebration of medieval life; Tohono O'odham Nation Rodeo & Fair, Oldest Indian rodeo in Arizona; and the Chinese Week & Culture & Cuisine Festival, a celebration of Chinese culture.
Staunton, Virginia Railroad Station, final destination of several locomotives taken further south to avoid Manassas Gap Railroad risks Eyewitnesses living along the Valley turnpike witnessed some locomotives being moved all the way to Staunton, Virginia about the same time that General Johnston was evacuating Manassas in the spring of 1862. Mounting any more of the locomotives at Strasburg for evacuation on the Manassas Gap Railroad had become too risky. The last time that Captain Sharps "railroad corps"Shriver moved any of the captured locomotives was when the last of the engines to have been taken from Martinsburg to Strasburg was stranded by Johnston's evacuation. The same night of the evacuation, the B&O; camelback Engine number 199 was put on the Manassas Gap Railroad tracks at Strasburg and moved south up the Shenandoah Valley to the very end of the line at Mount Jackson, Virginia.
The narrow corridor has been described by the two modern explorers as being the jewel in the crown of their achievement. The leader of the Wakhi people, a living remnant of the days of feudal lords, Shah Sayid Muhammad Ishmael, told the travelers that they were the first Westerners to traverse the legendary corridor in a generation. Belliveau and O'Donnell then crossed the Pamirs into Tajikistan on horseback, passing structures made of sheep horns (ovis poli), that guided the sojourners along the snowy trails just as described by Marco Polo and dictated by local custom. The first city that the duo encountered in China was Kashgar, where they resupplied their caravan for an arduous six week horse and camelback crossing of the Taklamakan Desert. In 1994, when they finally arrived in Dunhuang, a city in the Gansu Province, Belliveau and O’Donnell treated themselves to their first shower and hotel room after months of arduous travel.
Immediately after this turn, the track enters a right-handed dive down the fourth drop into a large wood/concrete tunnel that goes underground beneath a walking path and the previous large banked turn. Continuing the curve, the train pulls up -exiting the tunnel- bringing it to the top of a second banked hill where we find our fifth drop, down and to the right running along the backside of the large curve that lead to the tunnel. The banked tracks continue the speed around the outside and then sends the train up over a walking path via a double camelback hill after which it then turns left under itself through a massive canvas covered banked helix that rises and dips once more, before climbing up and over: the helix entrance, mid-run dips, and the lift hill. The train turns right and enters the covered brake run (above the queue) before slowly turning a tight right-handed 180 degrees back into the station.
US 15 enters Maryland at Point of Rocks, named for the pair of mountain peaks between which the Potomac River cuts through Catoctin Mountain, Pine Rock in Maryland and Furnace Mountain in Loudoun County, Virginia. The highway crosses the river on the Point of Rocks Bridge, a two-lane, eight-span camelback truss bridge that also passes over the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and CSX's Metropolitan Subdivision on the Maryland side of the river. Just north of the bridge, US 15 meets the western terminus of MD 28 (Clay Street), which serves as the main street of the community of Point of Rocks. The U.S. Highway heads north as a two-lane undivided controlled-access road that passes through a mix of farmland and forest on the eastern flank of Catoctin Mountain. North of its roundabout at MD 464 (Point of Rocks Road), US 15 has only two intersections, with Basford Road and Mountville Road, before passing under Elmer Derr Road and reaching a partial interchange with US 340 (Jefferson National Pike) east of Jefferson.
According to U.S. Military records, Piestewa was the first known Native American woman to be killed on foreign soil while serving in combat for the military. As such, Governor Napolitano thought this was an appropriate new name for the peak, which by extension affected the name of the freeway. The original five miles (8 km) of the freeway between McDowell Road and Glendale Avenue were constructed by the city of Phoenix (as the Squaw Peak Parkway) between 1986 and 1991. The first overpass to be completed was in 1986 at Osborn Road. In 1987, the bridge over the Grand Canal had been completed, as well as the overpass at McDowell Road and the southbound connector to eastbound I-10.
