Usually, the lines are fixed by clamping them into single cable clamps made of plastic or metal. Another possibility is to use so called cord grips which consist of weaved wire strands that put a grip around the cables. Von Planta's bike suffered a broken frame after a bad fall in Mongolia, and only a "bodge job" by Boorman using tyre levers and cable-ties enabled them to get to the next town where it could be welded. A special feature is made of the way the bridge is lit at night. This lighting scheme was designed by Speirs and Major Associates who also designed the lighting for the Burj Al-Arab. This technique was made possible by the evolution of glues and the massification of polyester and epoxy resins combined with fiberglass tape.
