Breastfeeding rates are known to differ among racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. Now, the researchers report, their new study suggests that Hispanic women are encouraged to breastfeed by relatives, while black mothers are discouraged from breastfeeding by hospitals that introduce formula to their babies.
While the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics have long suggested women should exclusively breastfeed for at least six months, getting to that point can be immensely complicated for women forced to return to work immediately and those who have no space to pump.

UNICEF and the World Health Organization also recommend exclusive breastfeeding from within an hour after a baby is born until the baby is 6 months old, but thereafter, nutritious complementary foods should be added to a child's diet while continuing to breastfeed for up to 2 years or beyond.
Women in conflict zones, as aid workers have taught me, may want to breastfeed, but they are also facing conflict, displacement, the need to feed multiple children of a variety of ages, a lack of nutrition for themselves and the imperative to be on the move to stay safe.

Although public opinion has varied in the past and some states have even instituted laws for where women are able to breastfeed, the reality is breastfeeding rates in the U.S. are rising, according to the 2014 Breastfeeding Report Card from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"We followed up with our employee, and what had happened is that she had asked the mother to move, she was sitting on a balance beam, which was part of the class, and the mother took that to mean she wasn't welcome to breastfeed, because she was breastfeeding at the time, and that was certainly not the intent of the employee," Elliott tells PEOPLE.
"Over the last few years, I started participating in different organizations about the stages of development and relationality, and I begged them to come together because there's the scientific, theoretical aspect of it and then there's the direct eye contact, skin-on-skin, smelling each other's heads … whether you can breastfeed or not, how they were born or not, love corrects everything," Morissette explains.
"The court can weigh in and rule as to whether breastfeeding in the way that she wanted to breastfeed was a way to frustrate the bond between the other parent and the child," says Gwendolyn Davis-Yancey, J.D., CEC, CSC a family law attorney and strategist who is not involved in this case, though she is based in Michigan, the state where it's taking place.
"It's a global conversation because every woman is going to have that choice – whether she breastfeeds or not – because whether she wants to or not, if she has a baby she makes milk, so this is every single mother in the world," Ruby, who herself faced the working moms' struggle of having to breastfeed her son while an active duty member of the military.
"In my practice, for the mothers who would like to breastfeed for a longer period, we advise them to follow the recommended feeding schedule regardless of the feeding methods, whether breast, bottle or cup - feed and drink a non-water drink no more than five times a day and never at night - and we encourage the brushing schedule (after breakfast and dinner feeding)," he said.
One group was asked to exclusively breastfeed the infants till six months, while the second group was asked to continue breastfeeding yet also introduce solid foods for the first week of the study -- the babies were 3 months old -- and in the second week begin to include six items that are typically linked to allergies in children: cow's milk, peanut, hen's egg, sesame, white fish and wheat.
"When I got pregnant, I made the decision that I wanted to be really honest about what I went through on social media, and with breastfeeding in particular, I feel like there's so much pressure on women these days that if you don't breastfeed, you're a bad mom, you're not organic and you're not doing the best thing for your baby," Eubanks, 34, told PEOPLE Now in a recent chat.
No matter how badly I wanted to breastfeed — not only for the nutritional and health benefits for him, but also for the beautiful bonding experience it would create between us — or how many times the lactation consultant visited our home, or how many hours I spent hooked up to a hospital-grade breast pump trying to milk myself in the middle of the night, I had nothing to give him.
