More women than ever are getting their breast implants removed, and Dr. Marguerite Barnett, one of the nation's top surgeons for removing implants or "explanting," previously told PEOPLE that Breast Implant Associated-Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, or BIA-ALCL, is becoming a bigger concern.

Millions of breast implants, including Lynn's, were recalled in July after they were linked to a higher risk of developing breast implant–associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma [BIA-ALCL], an uncommon cancer that has sickened hundreds of people and killed at least 2300 others.

As the popularity of breast augmentation has climbed, so have the number of health concerns related to breast implants themselves—specifically, textured breast implants, which have been definitively linked to a form of lymphoma called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

The society, which represents about 93% of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States and thousands worldwide, appreciates the ongoing discussion about breast implant safety, said Dr. Andrea Pusic, president of the Plastic Surgery Foundation, which supports the society's research and international activities.

"Allergan is taking this action as a precaution following notification of recently updated global safety information concerning the uncommon incidence of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)," according to a press announcement by Allergan.

"The American Society of Plastic Surgeons doesn't have a stance on breast implant illness, but Matarasso said the organization is "concerned and speaks regularly with the FDA, women's groups, and manufacturers about the potential for implants to cause a myriad of symptoms like joint pain and rashes.

The meeting, which is open to the public, comes just days after the FDA issued warning letters to two breast implant manufacturers for failing to comply with the agency's requirements to conduct long-term studies assessing the safety and risks of their silicone gel-filled implants.
|

"While the FDA doesn't have definitive evidence demonstrating breast implants cause these symptoms, the current evidence supports that some women experience systemic symptoms that may resolve when their breast implants are removed, referred to by some patients and health care professionals as breast implant illness," the agency said.

"The surgeon must have a patient sign off that they are aware of possible risks and symptoms associated with breast implant illness, so if they do experience those symptoms that often mimic other autoimmune issues, they are aware of a possibility of their implants being the cause and that they can heal by removing the implants," Diskavets said.

According to the FDA, the risk of developing breast implant–associated ALCL with Allergan's macro-textured implants is about six times higher than with textured devices from any other manufacturer in the US. "Continued distribution of Allergan's BIOCELL textured breast implants would likely cause serious, adverse health consequences and potentially death from BIA-ALCL," the FDA said in a July statement about the recall.

At least 457 women in the United States so far been diagnosed with breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), up from 414 cases in the last report More than 600 cases have been reported worldwide and 16 women have died, including nine in the U.S. BIA-ALCL is a type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that attacks the immune system and is not a cancer of the breast tissue.
