The portion through Laurel and South Laurel was expanded to a divided highway in the mid-1970s. MD 197 was relocated from its original course through Old Town Bowie to its present course near Bowie State University in the late 1980s; much of this segment was built as divided highway. The highway's southern end was expanded to a divided highway concurrent with the expansion of the US 50 interchange. MD 197's 1950s-era interchange with the Baltimore–Washington Parkway was reconstructed in the early 2000s.

The route was expanded to a divided highway from the parkway to MD 198 between 1976 and 1978. MD 197's modern bridge across the Amtrak Northeast Corridor was built in 1981. By 1983, a short segment of state- maintained divided highway connected the bridge to Jericho Park Road on either side of the railroad, including the main entrance to Bowie State University. The divided highway south of Bowie State University was under construction in 1989 and completed by 1991. In 1991, the divided highway was connected with Laurel Bowie Road north of Old Town Bowie; MD 197 was assigned to the new highway and removed from Old Town Bowie; MD 564 was extended east to its present terminus along old MD 197. MD 197 was expanded to a divided highway from US 301 to north of US 50 in 1991. The Maryland State Highway Administration has long-term plans to expand the two-lane portion of the highway between US 50 and MD 450 to a four-lane divided highway. Both of MD 197's freeway interchanges have evolved since they were constructed in the 1950s and 1960s.
Schiesler was undecided about her life, and began looking for ways to take time away from the community. The bulk of computer processing power for rendering the film was donated by the BSU Xseed, a 2.1 TFLOPS Apple Xserve G5-based supercomputing cluster at Bowie State University. It reportedly took 125 days to render, consuming up to 2.8GB of memory for each frame. Elephants Dream was released on March 24, 2006. The film itself, along with the other Blender Foundation “open movies,” was released under the Creative Commons Attribution License, so that viewers may learn from it and use it as long as proper attribution is given.

St. John's College in Annapolis and Washington College in Chestertown, both private institutions, are the oldest colleges in the state and among the oldest in the country.
The Don S. S. Goodloe House, a 1915–16 Colonial Revival style building veneered with brick, is significant for its association with Don Speed Smith Goodloe, the first principal of the Maryland Normal and Industrial School. The school, now Bowie State University, was Maryland's first postsecondary school for African Americans. As principal of the school from its opening in 1911 until 1921, Goodloe directed and managed this public institution through its formative years, a period characterized by the state's unwillingness to provide adequate funding for the housing and training of the students, while two white normal schools under the state were well funded. Forced to provide his own housing, Goodloe had this large and commodious house built to accommodate not only his family, but also students for which he received additional income from the state.
Stretch contributed raps and beats to the album, many of them co-produced with Tupac as 'Thug Music', including the lead single "Bury Me A G". As criticism of gangsta rap continued, songs were cut from the album by the label, including the planned first single "Out On Bail" (which Tupac performed with Stretch at The '94 Source Awards) and the Notorious B.I.G. collaboration "Runnin' from tha Police". Tupac had met the promising young rapper in 1993 and took him under his wing, even making him a prospective member of Thug Life. Live Squad, 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. had performed a joint set together at Maryland's Bowie State University in 1993 and collaborated on the unreleased track "House Of Pain", intended for Biggie's 1994 debut Ready To Die. The friendship between the three rappers, however, would soon be irrevocably damaged.
Collins' family, with help from Maryland State Senators Thomas V. Miller Jr. and Douglas J. J. Peters, started the 2nd Lt. Richard W. Collins III Foundation in Collins' memory. The foundation provides support to ROTC cadets at Maryland's historically black colleges and universities, including Collins' alma mater Bowie State University, as well as Morgan State University, Coppin State University, and the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. In March 2020, the Maryland legislature passed the 2nd Lieutenant Richard Collins III Law, which amended Maryland's hate crime statutes to have an act of violence against a protected class motivated by hate "either in whole or in substantial part" be considered a hate crime. Collins' family and the Prince George's County State Attorney advocated for the changes due to the dropping of Urbanski's hate charge and a lack of any convictions under the statute in 2019.

Bowie State University is the oldest HBCU in Maryland It was founded in 1865 by the Baltimore Association for the Moral and Educational Improvement of Colored People as a teaching school. The school first used space at the African Baptist Church at Calvert Street and Sarasota Street, in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1867, a dedicated facility was purchased nearby at Sarasota Street and Courtland Street, and the school was formally named the Baltimore Normal School for Colored Teachers. After being reorganized in 1883 as the Baltimore Normal School, it educated African Americans to be teachers for African American students until 1908. At that time, the school became a state institution of teaching under the Maryland State Department of Education and was redesignated as a Normal School No. 3. Shortly thereafter, in 1910, the school moved to the Jericho Farm, a 187-acre campus in Prince George’s County.
The picture is similar in Minnesota, with a report that the University of Minnesota is planning to decrease the number of transfer applicants by 8%, meaning that 300 fewer students will be able to transfer into the state's flagship college, although there is a conflicting report suggesting that enrollment at the state's university is increasing. At Maryland's Bowie State University, transfer applicants apply online, pay a fee of $40, ask their current college to send official transcripts of their coursework, and require a minimum of 24 transferable credits with a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Bowie considers applicants from two-year colleges differently from applicants elsewhere; two-year applicants can transfer a maximum of 65 credit hours, while applicants from four-year colleges can transfer a maximum of 90 credit hours. Applicants with fewer than 24 transferable credits must meet the requirements for freshman admission, which includes having their high school transcript and SAT/ACT scores sent.
Anne Arundel County Fiscal Year 2016 Priority Projects List There are currently plans for a 544-foot bridge between the two approaches, including the 160-foot main span over the Patuxent. The contract is anticipated to be awarded in the early 2020, after which construction will commence, with an expected opening in early to mid-2021. Phase IV of the trail will build a 2.06 mile spur east of the current trail from the intersection with Strawberry Lake Way, along that road to Waugh Chapel Road, through the Odenton Natural Area and then across the school grounds of Arundel High School and Middle School to Phase II of the South Shore Trail. In addition to the WB&A; Trail, the South Shore Trail, built along right of way of the same railroad, will eventually connect the trail to Annapolis; and the Bowie Heritage Trail will connect it to Bowie State University and the Bowie MARC station.
In 1920, the secretary of the Maryland State Colored Teachers' Association sent Goodloe a letter of commendation "for the constant and progressive fight he has made toward enriching of the curriculum and the uplifting of the standards of the Bowie State Normal School." During his tenure in Bowie, from 1911 until 1921, Goodloe established a faculty of ten members, an enrollment of 80 students, completion of the seventh grade as an admission requirement, a model school for student teachers at Horsepen Hill School–the first school for black children in Bowie, a summer session, a new dormitory for women, and renovation of living quarters for men. One additional year was added to the course, which led to a second-grade certificate and the opportunity for students to perform two years of additional work to earn a first-grade certificate. He made many pleas for additional funding before the legislature in Annapolis, which might have brought more rapid development to the school, but the state seemed to favor the white normal schools in Towson and Frostburg in its appropriations.
