The penalty pushed Alabama out of field goal range, and Alabama punted from the Tech 45-yard line. The ball rolled out of bounds at the one- yard line, and Tech was penalized half the distance to the goal line due to a holding penalty during the kick.

Replays of the play appear to show the ball was fumbled out of bounds at the 4 yard line. Replays also showed Brennan Carroll, son of head coach Pete Carroll and a Graduate Assistant at the time, attempting to call timeout despite the Trojans having none. Attempting to call a timeout without having one is a personal foul penalty and would have penalized the Trojans 15 yards and almost would have guaranteed a game-tying field goal attempt. Although the time was stopped on field with seven seconds remaining, the stadium timekeeper let the scoreboard clock run.

He was considered the Wolverines' best punter since Harry Kipke played for Michigan 20 years earlier. In a 1941 game against Northwestern, Kuzma punted the ball 53 yards with the ball going out of bounds at the Northwestern four-yard line; Crisler called the kick "miraculous." Guy Scott, owner of the on which the marijuana was growing, was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a felony, after 200 plants were seized. The second quarter of the Gator Bowl began with the Seminoles facing third down and 12 from the Virginia Tech 30-yard line. The first play of the quarter resulted in the third Virginia Tech sack of the game as Nathaniel Adibi tackled Rix for a long loss. The sack pushed Florida State out of field goal range, and the Seminoles punted. The ball bounced out of bounds at the Tech 11-yard line, and the Hokies began their first possession of the second quarter. After a running play that was stopped for no gain, Noel completed a 20-yard pass to Slowikowski for a first down at their 31-yard line.

Locke was four behind at 140, with Thomson a stroke behind in third. English amateur Jackie Jones was tied for fourth place, seven shots behind Daly. The maximum number of players making the cut after 36 holes remained at fifty, and ties for 50th place did not make the cut. The cut was at 151 (+7), and 46 players advanced. Stronger winds arrived on Friday morning for the third round, but Daly still led with 213 after a 77. Locke had closed to one shot after a 74 and Thomson was four behind Locke at 218 (+2), despite going out of bounds at the second hole. Harry Bradshaw and Sam King came next on 219.

After two incomplete passes to begin the drive, Vick escaped a blitz by scrambling to his left for 33 yards before stepping out of bounds at the Eagles' 45-yard line. A pass to Avant and another scramble by Vick set the Eagles up at the 20-yard line at the two-minute warning. The Miami Orange Bowl stadium was the site of the 1938 Orange Bowl In the first quarter, Auburn threatened twice to score the game's first points, but could not convert on either occasion. First, the Tigers used running plays by halfbacks Spec Kelly and Jimmy Fenton to go into Michigan State's half of the field, ultimately reaching the Spartans' 12-yard- line; the drive included a 25-yard rush by Fenton. The Spartans punted back to the Tigers, and John Pingel's kick went out of bounds at Auburn's 37-yard-line. Kelly picked up one first down with a 17-yard rush, and a second on a pass to Dutch Heath.
